FORMER INXS and Noiseworks frontman Jon Stevens' condition has "deteriorated" nearly three weeks after emergency heart surgery.
Stevens' publicist, Simon Lucas, revealed the 47-year-old has remained in a Sydney hospital battling complications.
"The operation was a success, however Jon’s condition has deteriorated and his recovery has been hampered due to some post-operative complications - primarily fluid around the heart and infection," he told news.com.au.
The New Zealand-born rockstar is reportedly "in good spirits" and is being visited daily by friends and family.
"He's a bit physically and mentally battered around, but he's doing really well," Mr Lucas said.
He is expected to be released mid-next week.
Stevens reportedly spoke with Jimmy Barnes, who underwent similar surgery, to gain some advice on his recuperation.
"Jimmy warned him not to come back too soon as it led to him having complications," Mr Lucas said.
"To do what they do on stage, you have to extert a huge amount of energy and it's a massive strain on the heart.
"He told Jon just to step back into it gradually, and that the last thing he wants to do is land himself back in hospital from pushing himself too hard."
Stevens is hoping to be back on stage by the end of the year and plans to further his work with the National Heart Foundation.
He went to his doctor for a routine check-up last month and the doctor discovered a blocked artery.
Last December, Stevens had two stents inserted into the arteries of his heart. His father died of heart-related causes and his brother, New Zealand Idol judge, Frankie Stevens also recently had stents put in.
Stevens joined INXS in 2000, and quit in 2003.
