Hi everyone, did you know that the #1 rated network broadcast show for the age group 9-12 is "Desperate Housewives"? I came here to find out everyone's thoughts about if they think the currently popular shows like Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, Camp Rock, iCarley, etc are appropriate for a 7 year old. In my opinion, I think they are more for the 11+ age group because of the lack of an adult role model, focus on materialistic behavior and the way they treat certain people on the shows. While they are wholesome enough for the older kids, I think the behaviors exhibited on the show contribute to the lack of respect that seems to be getting worse with each successive generation.

There's kids under 8 that watch The Simpsons, so I think those would be fine, plus the more 7 year olds that watch those the less teens and 20 plus year olds like them.

Same here. That seems highly, highly unlikely.

I couldn't believe it either. The statistics are from the Nielsen ratings. If you don't believe me you can Google "Desperate Housewives 9-12 Nielsen" and see all the results or "Desperate Housewives Boston Globe". It is shocking to believe that a huge number of children in this age group are allowed to watch this show. But this show is so obviously inappropriate I wanted to get feedback on the supposedly "it" shows now for my daughters age.

Jack, I hope your kidding about "the Simpsons" being OK for 7 year olds, but you are so right on the money about older teens competely turned off to shows watched by younger kids.

I think all them would be ok for kids under 8.

That's according to Nielsen ratings for the week of Dec. 13-19. The sexy ABC adult drama boasted over a million elementary and junior high viewers, according to the latest count.

The show isn't quite as popular now as it was but viewership is constantly changing for all shows. The Boston Globe news story focused on the ratings for that week (who knows it may have been many weeks), but the fact that for one week it was rated #1 for that age group is scary enough. Even if the ratings were in the top 20 for that age group I would still be shocked. I tried to find out what the rating is for that demographic now but there is no info available that I could find. I didn't want to really talk about Desperate Housewives though, I wanted peoples opinions about the "hot" shows that kids are under pressure to watch.

Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus) is a slut, Jonas is over hyped, and Camp Rock is awful.

I think Hannah Montana and iCarly would be for kids under 8.

My best friend's daughter is 5 and she LOVES Hannah Montana. The show is cute, but I wouldn't want my daughter watching a Miley Cyrus concert or anything Miley related that wasn't "Hannah Montana. The other shows sound really lame. Disney has become "Teen Disney" if you ask me. What happened to the days when the Disney Channel would show the classic movies and shows RELATED to Disney things-like the parks, characters, etc??

I don't mean to come accross as judgemental, but the fact that a child loves a show wouldn't be any kind of barometer for appropriateness in my opinion. I know every child is different, but five seems awful young to see teenage relationships as a focus for a show. The singing fantasy part is fine for the 5 minutes every show, it's the rest of the show that the parent needs to judge.

Hi Joe. My kids are adults now (ages 20 & 22) and I don't know anything about the shows mentioned in your poll.

When my kids were little, I read every book before they were allowed to read it and I watched tv shows myself to see what I thought my kids should see or not see.

What I found out from watching the shows is that while your child may be watching a tv show that you have decided is appropriate viewing for a youngster, many of the commercials are basically PG-13.

In fact, just this year, while my 22 year old son and I were watching reruns of Home Improvement (with Tim Allen), a risque commercial for levi's jeans aired. It was from their "live life unbuttoned" campaign.

In the ad, two strangers meet, lie to each other, strip their clothes off as they fondle each other on their way up a staircase in an apartment building. They push open the apartment door, their clothes land on the ground, they start to do it on a table, and the guy turns the light on briefly so that we can see the white couple is in a apartment belonging to a wholesome looking african american family. If you want to see it, google Live Life Unbuttoned and you'll find a link to the commercial.

I know we're all visiting here on a site dedicated to tv viewing, but I personally don't think TV is very good for kids. You mentioned Desperate Housewives being watched by pre-teens... I'm 42 years old and I've never seen one episode. I don't want to, either. The only tv shows I watch are the occasional episode of House or Bones, and they can often be offensive to people with sincere religious beliefs, since they are often making fun of people who believe in God.

IMO, tv has been going in the wrong direction for nearly 40 years. I miss shows like Get Smart, Green Acres, and the other ones that nick at nite would air in the 80s. They were funny, clever, enjoyable, and not offensive, imo.
