View Full Version : Rare Robbie "Cousin Oliver" Rist series cancelled for DVD release
TeeVeeCloset 09-29-2009, 07:28 PM BREAKING NEWS!!!!! Well, it's not really serious "Breaking News"....but I thought I would over-react like all the cable news channels...lol.....but seriously, this is being announced here first, even before www.tvshowsondvd.com....even though I have informed them, so expect a news item soon. I think I may be the only one upset here, but since I started the "Virgil Films & Entertainment" thread here elsewhere....I still think they are daring and deserve kudos....but it is with extreme sadness that I must announce they have cancelled the October 13, 2009 release of the 13 episode super rare never syndicated NBC 1970's Saturday morning series "Big John, Little John" starring "Robbie "The Brady Bunch" Rist...yes "Cousin Oliver"....seems he still cannot get a break, the character is credited for when "The Brady Bunch, Jumped The Shark" and now his long, long, did I say long forgotten solo TV series came so close to being released on DVD has been cancelled due to no sales interest. This series will remain lost forever.....
very very sad for us obscure TV series collectors.....
catlover79 09-29-2009, 08:21 PM Man, Robbie just can't catch a break!!
Adamantium 09-29-2009, 10:07 PM That's too bad. I would have bought it.
Retro4Life 09-29-2009, 10:45 PM I remember that show. It aired after "The Monster Squad" on NBC back in 1976 I think.
I wasn't that into it, but the title tune was catchy. :)

Marvo301 09-29-2009, 10:56 PM I probably would have bought this too. Earlier this year I bought "Land of the Lost" the entire series and really enjoyed. "Big John, Little John" was another show I used to watch on Saturday mornings. It would have been fun to see it again and return to my childhood for a few hours. Oh well.
Jude The Obscure 09-29-2009, 11:40 PM How can they say there is no sales interest? You don't tell people you have this product, how can they buy it??????
James 09-30-2009, 02:39 AM Not to worry, Robbie! I'll likely pick up a Brady Bunch Season 5 DVD!
McGillicuddy 10-01-2009, 11:57 AM Though I'm not familiar with this show, I'm sorry to see ANY planned dvd release for a rarely seen short-lived tv series get cancelled. There are soooooo many (especially Prime time) shows that I would love to see get released and when something like this happens it seems like its reduces chances for others.
TeeVeeCloset 10-01-2009, 12:05 PM The update according to www.tvhowsondvd.com is that the release has been now just postponed till early next year....I hope so, but I am still very weary. But perhaps my over reaction posts from my original reliable source did what it was intended to do....to show Virgil that there is an interest, yet a rather small one I admit for this rare unseen lost series.
jehobden 10-07-2009, 08:27 PM I ordered this show, having watched all 13 eps back in 6th grade and seen 3 eps on DVD, and was just told that it was postponed until May. It hasn't been cancelled yet, and I hope it still comes out then.
Marvo301 10-07-2009, 08:46 PM Cool! Maybe we'll get to see this show on DVD yet! I hope so!

Based on the theme I'd say it was a really dumb show!

It was a truly awful but to me fun series, BTW...it aired after "Land Of The Lost" at 11:30AM eastern on NBC, I have the original full page TV Guide Ad.
For those who are interested in obtaining the series, I posted this elsewhere with little fanfare when Virgil cancelled the release again, it is available in AUSTRALIA, for some very strange reason, region 0, I got it from a seller on amazon, it is totally legit and has the exact same cover art and has a nice bargain price, plus it arrived to the US in 6 days!
Dr. Thong 05-10-2010, 02:21 PM The title of this thread had me thinking that they'd shot a Cousin Oliver pilot that the network didn't pick up as a series and they were going to release it on DVD.

That sounds like a worse idea than Kelly's Kids!

If I was forced at gunpoint to choose between the two, I'd go with Kelly's Kids myself. I remember watching that episode as a kid and wondering where the hell the Brady Bunch was!!
I didn't know about "backdoor pilots" at that time.;)
