View Full Version : Do You Write in Cursive or Print?

I very rarely write in cursive unless I'm writing a short thank you card, or signing a salutation. Other than that, it's print all the way. This question popped into my mind when I was at school and I saw many of my friends taking cursive notes in class... I just find it unusual.

Definitely a mixture of both. Cursive is easier for some letters, and print is easier for others I guess lol.

Mostly print. About the only time I use cursive is when I'm signing my name.

Cursive-it is so much faster for me!

I print at work though since I teach 1st grade and they can't read cursive yet!

I print much, much more. Pretty much the only time I use cursive is when I sign my name and/or address an envelope (I use my own return address labels).

this is a great question mattie. actually there was an interesting article in a recent newsweek issue about how due to the tech age, the art of cursive is becoming a dead "language". It talked about how schools don't even focus on penmanship anymore and that school suppliers hardly sell handwriting workbooks anymore. one expert even feared that cursive would be extinct in the near future and was afraid that future generations would not be able to decypher the declaration of independence. i don't know if i'd go that far, but i do see it significantly declining

i print when i'm taking notes, making a list, basically anytime i write casually. but i always write in cursive if its a personal note or important letter. i love cursive, i think its pretty and romantic and poetic. but i'm a linguist at heart, i love the english language and am old school about using pen and paper when possible.

I hate that I do this but I write both.

When I write a note to someone I'm afraid they might not understand my cursive so I then write in print. I hate that I have to do this. It's all because one of my child's teachers didn't understand a certain curve in my handwriting so ever since I am writing like this. I feel that a person should know my cursive handwriting because I do write legably. I follow the basic rule (The one atop any classroom blackboard). LOL.........

I do teach handwriting and we have handwriting workbooks, but I admit it is hard to fit it in and it is probably the easiest subject to skip. I think I am going to make more of an effort to fit it in. :)

I write in cursive. Sometimes I also print. But I prefer to write in cursive the most.

Here's example of my handwriting from my notes from class that I scanned because I'm that bored on a Saturday night. Some of my letters, like the s's, t's, e's, g's, etc just turn out cursive because it just works for me, while it's easier for me to put certain other letters always in print.

A mixture. Reading something from me is a real adventure, lol. Ever since computers, my penmanship has become atrocious. It was never any great shakes before, but it's like hieroglyphics now, lol.

Mostly print, unless signing my name. I find it quicker, easier and more legible! :)

My writing has become a mixture of both over the years, with cursive usually being the more visible of the two.

I have the same problem Janice. Ever since computers my penmanship has deteriorated. And it was no great shakes to start with.

I mainly print unless I am signing my name. I have noticed that my handwriting has gotten a lot worse over the years. I don't know if it's a medical condition or what, but I have found that I have trouble writing occasionally. Kind of weird but I guess I can live with it.

My handwriting is really bad if I do cursive so I usually don't. Although my printing's not much better, but it's at least legible. Maybe my being left handed has something to do with my horrible penmenship.

I always print, always have too. I think the seattle public school system doesn't teach or enforce cursive cos whenever kids would transfer from other districts, cities, states ect. they always wrote in cursive and were always shocked that nobody else in the class did.

Both. In fact, I've been trying to improve my cursive and printing in the past few years. Too many people were telling me, "I can't understand what you wrote on that note" or "Your memo was hard to read".

Awwww, you have such cute writing. :)

To answer the question, I do both... I was taught cursive in school, but my cursive looks like a third-grader's cursive, so I don't bother.

I'm severely hearing impaired, which means I do a lot of writing when out in public... So I can write really quickly and decipher almost all handwriting. :) I'm not quite that good at deciphering doctors' notes... YET. But yeah.

Same here. I like to think I have very good penmenship, and it especially looks good when I print.:D

I figure cursive is still going to have to be out there. Thinks of all the times that a person uses cursive - all the papers that read "Sign your name". I don't know about anybody else, but I get asked to "Sign my name" quite a few times.

If I'm filling out forms and certain things at work I write in print. For other things outside of work I write in cursive.

Mostly print. The only time I write cursive is when I am signing my name. I taught myself how to write cursive before I learned it in school, and the ironic thing is some letters I had forgotten to write in cursive. Guess thats what they mean when they say use it or lose it.

I almost always print. I can write in cursive, but I usually don't bother with it. I even sign my name in printing. What was the point of inventing cursive anyway?

After doing some research, it seems like cursive writing was developed as a way to enable the scribe to write faster (even though I write faster in print than in cursive), and back when you wrote with quills and ink, not lifting the quill so often meant less risk to stain the paper with ink smudges. I see no use for it today though, except maybe that it "looks nice".

I mainly print. I really don't write anymore and when I do it's print except for my signature. I used to have nice handwriting, but lately it looks bad. I just need to write more.
