The girl was Michaela Garecht. I believe someone posted an article concerning investigating if there's any connection between Garrido and Michaela's abduction on a thread about that recently. That would be great if this could give the Garecht's some answers about what happened to their daughter.

In 1976, Garrido was arrested for rape and kidnapping. In 1977 he was convicted in federal court because he took the girl across state lines and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Garrido was paroled from his federal prison sentence in 1988 after serving 12 years of a 50 year sentence. He had also been convicted in Nevada State Court in 1977 of kidnapping and was given a prison sentence of life in prison with parole eligibility after 5 years. This was to be served concurrently with his federal prison sentence. So when he was paroled from the federal system in January of 1988 he was then sent to a state prison in Nevada. However because the sentences were concurrent, he was considered to have also served the 12 years in state prison so he was already parole eligible. He was paroled from his state prison sentence in August of 1988. In 1993, Garrido was returned to federal prison for violating his parole but released again after 6 months. Garrido was in jail or prison from 1976 to August of 1988 when he was released from prison in Nevada. He was released on August 26th, 1988.

Good grief. I thought the feds were tougher than that. 12 years of a 50 year sentence for a horrific rape and abduction across state lines is not nearly enough time to serve. I wonder what the parole board was thinking when they decided he deserved to be let loose among us.

Its a joke just like with Kenneth Parnell he got minimal time and the person that helped him kidnapp Steven only served 2 of 7 years,rob a bank you get the book thrown at you.

Well, it was a different time, not saying it was right that he was let out, but I will say, I am actually surprised he even did 12 years. All federal crimes committed from 1987 onward that are federal crimes are not parole eligible. When the parole system was in effect, it was not unusual to see inmates paroled after serving as little as 1/6 of their sentence. So if Garrido had been sentenced to 50 years now, he would have served most of that sentence. In fact now, in the federal system, for crimes committed in 1987 or later, inmates are eligible for approximately 54 days a year shaved off their sentence for 'good time'. So that would mean Garrido would have to serve probably 44, 45 years of a 50 year sentence before he would have been released.

However there are other ways he could have got time reduced. Like even now, you can get a year reduced for participating in a drug or alcohol rehab in prison. So all you have to do is get someone to say you are an addict and once you complete the program you get a year shaved off your sentence. Now I do not question this for non violent offenders who are say addicted to hard drugs or alcohol. However at the same time, the system is abused by non violent and violent offenders alike. Look at former Enron Chief Financial Officer Andrew Fastow. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison after pleading guilty. So using his good time credit, Fastow will get a year shaved off his sentence, then Fastow was able to get another year shaved off by claiming he was addicted to valium which made him eligible for the drug rehab program. He is scheduled to be released after serving 5 years, so he will serve the majority of his sentence. However I suppose many would question is 5 years enough for stealing hundreds, perhaps thousands of people's money and life savings, retirements, etc. But then again Fastow was a key witness against Jeff Skilling and Ken Lay although I question how critical Fastow's testimony really was and if they really needed him to convict Skilling and Lay.

It is just weird how you can go up to another person, kill them and get as little as a handful of years in prison, yet you get caught trafficking marijuana and get the book thrown at you. It is strange how in this country, if you take ALL homicide cases this is all degrees of murder, manslaughter, DUI manslaughter, whatever, you take them all, and it has been found on average, the average amount of time a person serves for killing another human being is 6 years.

If Garrido went back to federal prison for six months in 1993, this means that his wife was making sure that Jaycee didn't try to escape during this time. Garrido's wife needs to pay a harsh price for all of this too. Let's not forget about her role.

Excatly you cant even come into the States if youve been arrested at anytime in your life for marijuna. I remember hearing on a program once the prisons had to release violent offenders sooner then they should have been released because the prisons were so full, and yet they will throw a poor sucker in jail for stuff like parking tickets,dope possesion and child support.

I find it hard to believe a person can be charged a number of times for violent offenses and yet they still are allowed out on the street because of some reason or other.

Thing that annoys me the most,when they cut the wife slack in those type of situations saying she must have been to scared to come forward.The wife is just as into it as the husband if not more so,any normal women wouldnt keep a girl captive in her home for years.

I didnt catch it sounds like it would have been a compelling interview.

I am totally convinced that Garrido is Michaela's abductor.

Same m.o. (kidnapping in broad daylight by shoving the victim into a car, both girls look the same and are similar in age), same type of car used (light-coloured Sedan), same facial features / structure and pock marks and mole by his nose (as the sketch shows), both abducted from central California, about the same time (two years apart).

Garrido had been released from prison four months before the kidnapping of Garecht.

The only thing is, Garrido was 37 at the time of the Garecht kidnapping (not 18-24 as was reported). However, three things: (1) they were relying on the eyewitness of a child (older people can look younger to them). (2) he was probably disguising himself (if you are going to commit crime in broad daylight that is probably a wise idea); thus, the long hair was really a wig. (3) the other two suspects in the case are OLDER than Garrido!

The case always struck me as odd, even when I was watching this for the first time as a young teenager. I thought it odd that a guy who was my uncle Steve's age and had long hair and a rock shirt would abduct a little girl. Didn't seem to fit the profile. I thought (and still do) that abductors are usually a bit older than that and do not look like hip young head-bangers.

It's too bad the news station running the ads for these deals doesn't include a picture of the actress who advertises them, http://www.khq.com/Global/category.asp?C=184935 because she looks EXACTLY like Jaycee Lee Dugard as an adult! Perhaps the station would know who she is and where to access a picture of her online.
