And it is quite associated with cartoons...
Although most fans are "otakus" or fond with the Japanese series..

I prefer cartoons. Never really liked anime.

same here. never been a fan or follower of japanese anime cartoons. although in the 80s, a lot of the animated shows at the time were heavily influenced by the manga/anime style, in terms of how they were designed and drawn. examples of shows include thundercats, galaxy rangers to name.
