Shelley Long drops by ABC’s new comedy Modern Family as outrageous MIA mom Dede Pritchett, whom the actress describes as “the most complicated character I’ve ever done.” Via flashback, we will see Dede’s offensive toast at the wedding of her ex-husband, Jay (Ed O’Neill), to his young new bride, Gloria (Sofía Vergara). “Thirty-five years of marriage and you couldn’t wait 10 minutes to run away with Charo,” Dede says to the new couple, according to Ed. “I knew they were perfect for each other when I saw his wallet and her boobs.” Shelley left behind the good manners of Diane Chambers to have fun rumbling with Sofía’s feisty character: “And I have the bruises to prove it!”
