View Full Version : The limping Dr House has wrecked my knees, says Hugh Laurie
Brian Damage 09-20-2009, 01:41 AM Hugh Laurie says he may be forced to quit his starring role in the hit TV medical drama House - because pretending to have a limp has given him real injuries.
The former Blackadder star now has a limp himself after playing cantankerous
Dr Gregory House, who uses a cane to walk, for the past five years.
Laurie, 50, said: ‘The show might last through to series seven, eight or nine but I don’t know if I will because I’m starting to lose my knees. It’s a lot of hip work. There are things going badly wrong. I need to do yoga.’
The actor has been nominated for Best Actor at the Emmy Awards for three years in a row, and the series is shown in 66 countries.
As Dr House, he walks with a limp in his right leg - the result of a gunshot wound.
In a recent interview he described how difficult it was to live in Los Angeles, apart from his family in the UK.
'I never thought I'd end up living in Los Angeles while my children grew up in Britain, but here I am and we are all making the best of it,' he said.
He said he and his wife Jo decided it would be too tough on their two sons and one daughter to uproot them from their life in London

Schmoopie 09-20-2009, 03:00 AM Wow, that's a shame. I'm not a fan of "House" but I've watched it tons of times. I can see where pretending to have a limp could cause problems. Hopefully he can work it out with the producers, because I'm sure they would rather have him stay on if they can find him medical treatment. House is a really popular show and I know that Fox and USA don't want to jeopardize ratings. God knows TV is bad enough!
80sTrivia 09-20-2009, 10:28 AM Shame to hear. Hopefully, the show can come up with a solution so he won't have to limp on the set.
catlover79 09-20-2009, 03:07 PM Such a shame - I have bad knees myself so I (literally) feel his pain. Hopefully the show can accomodate Mr. Laurie so he can stay on and still keep the character real.
ryan423 09-21-2009, 03:57 PM You people believe this?!
 Hello McFly, Hello?!
This comes from the same people who told us about a "Friends" movie...
Brian Damage 09-22-2009, 10:02 AM British actor Hugh Laurie has shot down reports he's considering quitting hit medical show House after allegedly developing a real-life hip injury from his character's limp. Laurie plays grumpy protagonist Dr. Gregory House on the TV drama and his character uses a cane to walk.
But the fake injury has started to cause Laurie real pain, and he recently sparked rumors he was prepared to sacrifice his job for the sake of his health.
He said, "The show might last through to series seven, eight or nine but I don't know if I will because I'm starting to lose my knees. It's a lot of hip work. There are things going badly wrong."
However, Laurie, 50, insists he's not quite ready to hang up his stethoscope after six seasons as Dr. House.
His representative assures fans reports of his retirement are "not true" and laughs off claims of his hip trouble, branding them "hysterical".

robyrob 09-22-2009, 02:10 PM if it was really that bad, i would think that they would just write it into the script to put him into a wheelchair for awhile - or maybe some miracle surgery fixes him or some nonsense

Well, that's good news.

I don't think this is right. It was mentioned a few times early in the series that it was the result of an "infarction" in a vessel in his leg--something like a stroke in a place other than the brain, if I understood it correctly. The constant pain is due to the fact that this leads to the "death" of the muscle.
Miss Lisa 11-23-2009, 12:24 AM Too bad that one of his trademarks is causing him problems. I heard that some of his canes that he uses through out the show are in a museum somewhere.
