There is a show in England that challenges families to eat, dress and live in a 1970's world. Could you live this life?

Think about it, disco music, fondu and bell bottoms...could you survive? ;)

I think that's great, it makes you appreciate what you have. I own a cellphone, but only for emergencies.

I do have a cell phone (mostly for emergencies on the road) but I have no Ipod, I don't tweet, no laptop, no Tivo, no Blu Ray, I don't use debit cards, and have never used an ATM (though I do have a debit card now, I just haven't used it yet, lol).

Let's see, no video games, no GPS, no remote starter, yeah I'm pretty much in the 70s I guess.

I wonder on the show if they re-created all the downtown shops. Sears, Penneys, Gambles, Osco Drugs, Woolworth, Jupiter, Cresent Jewelers and a bunch of others I am forgetting.

I think MTV aired a show very similar to the one you're talking about. Teens had to live in a house and everything was 70s themed and they essentially had to live "retro." They also competed in games and there was a person booted off every show (I believe). Does anyone else remember this show and the name of it? I liked it.

MTV did a similar reality show in 2005 called The 70's House. It was actually a cool show. I think there like 12 contestants and each week contestants got voted off for being the least 70's.

I can survive without the ipod and the cell phone...it's the interwebs I'd be lost without. But hell yeah, I'd do it. As someone who's never lived through the 70's, sounds fun to me.

Yeah, I basically only have a cell phone for the same reason as Brian. I do own a laptop and never go anywhere without my iPod, so I guess I'm not stuck in the 70s. If I was stuck in the 70s, I'd have to wear clothes like this!!

Wow, I'm impressed with all of you "old fashioned" people!:joke: Seriously, though, I have a cell phone but the main reason I got it is because if I'm at work, I can't call my husband unless I'm in the break room. I can't call home because it's long distance and basically I use it for my husband and I. We just got him a cell phone because it's so much easier for us to keep in touch. If he's at work and the bus is running late to come home, he will call me and leave a message (if I'm unavailable), and then I don't worry about him. I'm not one of those people who uses their cell phone exclusively. I've only texted about maybe ten times in my life, and mainly those are pictures or just a few words.

I just got an Ipod shuffle (see related thread) and last night I finally figured out how to make a playlist of my CD's. Now the biggest challenge.... putting the music on the Ipod itself!!:bonk: :wallbang

I do have a laptop, so I guess I'm more into the 2000's than I thought!! Cool!!!

As for this show? I'd much rather be on an 80's show. I could like totally fer sure do the tubular clothes!!!

Out of those three the only one I have is a cell phone. That's because I can't drive and depend on public transportation (that's not very reliable).

We're all in the dark ages. I still have a cassette recorder.

So do I. Most of the books I read (or shall I say listen to) are from the TX State Library Talking Book Program. All their books are still on cassette. They are trying to make the transition to newer technology, but it's expensive and takes time.

Same here! But my car is a 2002. I do have a cell phone but I hardly talk on it. I also have a laptop but it's only because I'm using it because my other computer doesn't work at the time.

I think I could live in the 70's. I could deal with the fashions, music, TV, movies, and I could deal with no cell or internet. I mean they had pay phones and newspapers back then too!!

The thing with TV though, I don't think cable came out until the late 70's so I figure it'll be just the 3 channels and UHF!! I think that's what it was called before PBS.

My family was one of the first in my town to get cable in the early 70's. But back then "cable" went we got about 12 channels, from 2 to 13 I think. We had three CBS channels, two NBC, four ABC (!), plus one PBS and one for WGN TV from Chicago. Later they added the option of Showtime (I think this was about 1979).

I've said it before and I'll say it here; despite only a dozen channels, I honestly think there was tons more to watch in those days, at least tons more good stuff. There were local kids cartoon shows, quiz bowls, religious programs, late night horror movie hosts, and lots of local sporting events too. Saturday mornings were a treasure trove of cartoons, live action stuff, Sid and Marty Krofft offerings and a few old movies here and there.

I'd miss the internet if I went back to the 70's, but honestly, if everything else was as it was when I grew up, I wouldn't need it. ;)

OH YEAH!! Saturday morning TV was awesome back then!! Gave you a good reason to wake up early on a weekend day!! These days, once in a while, I turn the TV on Sat. morning, see some of the cartoons they show now, and think, I just don't get it. Guess I'm just getting old.

And I do remember when the channels only went from 2 to 13!! You also remember actually having to get up to change the channel??!!:D

About Showtime, I don't remember when that came about, but I do remember something called Cinema Plus, where they showed movies that had just been in the theater a few months before. That was a big thing back then! CP went on for a couple years, then was changed to HBO. Then I think all the other movie channels came about.

Sometimes I think I'd be better off without cable, but there are a few channels there I enjoy, or at least one show on a few specific channels. I'd miss SyFy for Destination: Truth, History Channel for several shows, the cable news channels for, well, entertainment I guess () and Adult Swim for Venture Brothers. I also enjoy TCM, as it reminds me of what good scripts can be like.

Otherwise, yeah, I could lose it, too. :(

I could do it cuz I lived back then & in the 60's too. And I love to wear 60's & 70's type stuff anyway. As long as there were old 60's & 70's shows on the tv & I had internet I'd be fine. Cuz there's nothing good on the 3 networks or PBS now. I love old 50's/60's & 70's shows. I'd only need internet cuz my fave stars are all from the 60's & 70's & they aren't in magazines now like they were then. I have a cell phone and an MP3 player but the cellphone I don't use except to talk to a few certain people & my mp3 players are full of old 60's & 70's music. I still have a bunch of my old records. The 70's was a cool time & I'd go back anytime, if I could...

For me, no cellphone, no gps, no ipod, no laptop, no cable (have had it before though). But I do use credit and (on rare occasions) debit cards.

I was really steamed when a furniture retailer didn't want my on-paper directions to my house for delivery == "We have gps!!" -- and then, on the morning of delivery I get a phone call from the driver telling me he's "lost." aRRRRRRgh!

The biggest changes I've made since the 70s are no more corduroy pants or bell-bottoms and using a PC everyday (no more typewriters). And no more zipper-front shirts, which were already out of style when I wore one on my first day of HS in 1979...!

I like the '80s too, I just turned 15 when the 1980s began. In the U.S., I think it was one of the first decades to really do interesting mixes of popular culture from earlier decades, where long before it seemed that things were more clearly defined -- or moving forward without looking back as much.

In my case I like comics, so apart from reading some on my pc, the experience is the same as it was for me when I was much younger: Collecting and enjoying. So I'm not affected as much by new technologies as music afficionados, computer graphics artists, etc.

Cool! I was born in 1990. I don't like that so many things change because it's the 00's. I would like to have internet, but seriously, I wouldn't mind using a phone booth if I needed to make a call, instead of using my cellphone.

Have you thought about that cell phones aren't telephones anymore. They're super machines wich includes a phone funktion, and you can download music, listen to music, watch TV, make videos, take pictures and all...

I am 56 years old and wish the technology we have now we would have had when I was a teenager in the 1980’s. The mobile device technology has made life tremendously easier. I don’t have to seek out a pay phone to make a call in public. I can just use my phone to make purchases. I can send pictures and documents to someone in an instant. I can communicate with anyone around the World.

In school, the internet would have been invaluable and can’t help thinking it would have made me a much better student.

Entertainment, to be able to listen to any song basically for free. To have basically a television in my pocket to be able to watch whatever programming when I wish. I remember once in high school I got a traffic ticket and the stupid suburb wouldn’t allow me to pay it since I was underage (although there was no state law) and I had to go with my parents to a night court on Thursdays which means I missed Hill Street Blues for the week, and since the show was serialized, you somewhat miss the storyline. Now, no big deal, I can watch it when I got home.

Plus a thousand other things. I laugh when I read people say that “life was so much better/more simple before the internet/mobile phones etc.” while ironically sending that message on a mobile device.

The mobile device, the internwt/Wifi is one of the greatest inventions in human history.
