Philadelphia -- Dad could not believe his good luck.

Steve Monforto made a great grab, catching his first foul ball after years of going to Phillies games. He fist-bumped his buddies, high-fived his 3-year-old daughter and then handed her the prize.

Big mistake.

Little Emily threw the ball over the railing.

Stunned by his toddler's toss Tuesday night, all Pop could do was hug her.

"I didn't want her to think she did anything wrong," Monforto said on WIP-AM radio Wednesday.

Philly crowds are known for being a tough bunch, but everyone at Citizens Bank Park cheered -- first his catch, then his cuddle.

"This was the true reflection of what Philly fans are like," said Bonnie Clark, the team's vice president of communications.

Cameras captured the scene of Monforto reaching over the railing and snagging Jayson Werth's foul in the fifth inning against Washington.

The video was displayed at the top of the Yahoo! Web page and made the NBC national news. The entire family is scheduled to appear on the "Today" show Thursday.

Monforto and his daughter still went home with a baseball. A few of them, actually.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and three team employees saw what happened and each grabbed a ball and went up to the stands.

"He was very appreciative," Phillies executive Mike Stiles said.

I saw this on the news earlier. The poor Dad was just in shock at what his daughter did. But then as the shock started to wear off he grabbed her and gave her a big hug. What a sweet moment. I'm glad the Phils made sure they didn't go home empty handed!

It's really amazing these days... instant celebrity at age 3 :)

Still, both of those kids are cute, which makes it a nice little story.

If I were below, and I saw that happen and I caught the ball she threw, I'd honestly try to get up to where they were sitting and return the ball to them. It's fine if I catch a foul ball myself, but I wouldn't want to get one that way.

i agree. it was a fun little tidbit on the 11pm news but, really, interviewing the father and worse interviewing the daughter is going overboard. they're taking a tender father/daughter moment, that happened to be captured on camera, and exploiting it. like i said, it was a cute as just a fluff piece to cap off the 11pm news but they should have left it as a cherished memory between the father and daughter.

Yeah I know Greg "Bull" Luzinski. At the ballpark, the Phillies actually gave him his own restaurant. It's called "Bull's Barbecue" with barbecue ribs, chicken and sides. Great food. He is up their on the Phillies all-time Home Run leaders, obviously behind Schmidt. McCarver I know. He became an announcer (he was working with the Phillies- back when Harry and Whitey were still around announcing. Now he works for Fox with Joe Buck). McCarver also has his own talk show since retiring. I like him, but he's a pain in the butt when he announces :lol: a decent player though too. Bob Boone was their other catcher for awhile in the late '70s- early '80s, on those good Danny Ozark teams, then eventually that group expanded to include Schmidt, Maddox and a bunch others, to win the championship in '80.

I saw that link you posted. I love that site (baseball reference). I also know about Rick Wise but couldn't tell you about him, and I don't know him compared to other Phillies of the 1970's. PM me though and we can talk more baseball and trivia- I also talk to another member off the boards about sports and trivia. Anyways, I don't think Steve Carlton was on that 1971 team, right Tweety? He might of been in the majors but I think he was either with somebody else or wasn't with us yet/hadn't come up to the majors yet at that time.

Larry Bowa is great. I loved him as a manager with us a few years back too. He was also the manager of San Diego in the 1980's, a 3rd base coach with the Yankees. Then when Torre got fired and went over to the Dodgers, he brought a long Mattingly and Bowa respectively- to be his coaches again. I believe Larry is the hitting coach for the Dodgers now. Mariano Duncan, another former Phillie, is their 3rd base coach. Anyways, Larry was a great player. He only hit maybe 1, if that, home run a year though :lol:. Wasn't known for that. More of a Juan Pierre type player. Lead off guy, gets mainly singles, and doubles here and their, hits maybe 1 or 2 homers a year and steals a lot of bases. I don't know any of the other players on both teams you mentioned.

Tweety, your post brought back memories of when I was a huge fan of the Phils in the 70's and 80's. I recognize some of the names from your list but I was into them when Bob Boone was C, Garry Maddox was CF, Manny Trillo was 2B, etc.

Yeah those are the teams I remember more. The late '70s-early '80s teams, more then the teams of the early to mid 1970's. yeah the spectrum was awesome. great times!!!

The game I went to in 1973 was from my being a member of a local (NJ) all star team, and the whole team got to go to that game at the Vet. I think someone who was affiliated with our league had some connection with the Phillies, which is why we went to the Vet rather than Shea or Yankee (we were closer to NY by about a half hour).

I would typically go to about 10-12 Met games/year during the 70s.

My friends and I would also go to a lot of Knicks games at Madison Square Garden and Sixer games at the Spectrum. And, speaking of basketball, when I was at Rutgers University in NJ, the Nets would play their home games at our college athletic center (they played there for four years while the Meadowlands complex was under construction), and as students, we got to see NBA games for 3 bucks. On Halloween, 1979, we went to see Larry Bird's 9th NBA game, against the Nets, and he torched them that night.

i believe you. pretty much 90% of people from north jersey, which I am assuming you are from, are yankees fans, or mets fans (usually yankee fans, but mets fans are the second coming and an exception). Like you mentioned, New Jersey residents around that time had to pick between being either a Yankees or Mets fan. Their are Phillies fans in North Jersey but not even close to the amount of Yankees & Mets fans. Not to mention North Jersey is so close to New York, a lot of people are fans of New York sports, work in New York, and or shop and visit NY and may live in New Jersey. the connection is amazing to me.

mike/mriggles on these boards is an eagles fan, yet lives in north jersey. i am surprised he is an eagles fan being from that area, considering people from north jersey tend to be more giants fans.

You wanna hear something weird? I've had the same guy do my taxes for the past few years. I had to come back to get them fully done(I had a few more deductions), but my tax guy wasn't going to be in town, so he got one of his co-workers to do it. Later we were talking and she mentioned being from NJ. I figure she was from N NJ, most people who I meet are. I asked where she lived in NJ, she said a town called Runnemede. I was like Are you serious? I used to live in Glendora, which is right next to Runn.(and one of my aunts lives in Runn.). She said her husband was from Glendora. I was floored. Never met anybody who was from around even close to where I used to live!! So we were talking about the area and things in the area. I told her where we used to live and where my aunt lives and she knew exactly where those were.

You wanna hear something weird? I've had the same guy do my taxes for the past few years. I had to come back to get them fully done(I had a few more deductions), but my tax guy wasn't going to be in town, so he got one of his co-workers to do it. Later we were talking and she mentioned being from NJ. I figure she was from N NJ, most people who I meet are. I asked where she lived in NJ, she said a town called Runnemede. I was like Are you serious? I used to live in Glendora, which is right next to Runn.(and one of my aunts lives in Runn.). She said her husband was from Glendora. I was floored. Never met anybody who was from around even close to where I used to live!! So we were talking about the area and things in the area. I told her where we used to live and where my aunt lives and she knew exactly where those were.

That's crazy because my half-sister lives in Runnemede, which is not far from the town I live in. I am familiar with Glendora as well.

And I've heard of that name, except their is a church by the name of Our Lady of Lords that my Grandmother used to go to for several years (she stopped going like 7/8 years ago, when she got her license taken away from her). Our Lady of Lords is where my cousin got christened, and I've been their several times. It's funny how that hospital has the same name as a church in Jersey as well.

I grew up in Matawan Township (now known as Aberdeen). Exit 117 off of the Garden State Parkway to give you an idea. We're kind of in between Keyport, Hazlet, Marlboro and Holmdel ha ha...

Very true.... the press couldn't stop talking about the kind of a father Joe Jackson (Michael's father) was to his kids... that guy kept getting shoved down our throats (at least, down the throats of those who chose to watch the news during the weeks following Michael's death... Joe Jackson was all you heard about)... so for a story like this to get play for a couple of days, I say bring it on. It's a great story, of a real dad and a real kid.
