The classic stage hit gets the Hollywood treatment in the story of Elwood P. Dowd who makes friends with a spirit taking the form of a human-sized rabbit named Harvey that only he sees (and a few privileged others on occasion also.) After his sister tries to commit him to a mental institution, a comedy of errors ensues. Elwood and Harvey become the catalysts for a family mending its wounds and for romance blossoming in unexpected places.

Interesting little throwaway line in a trade today for a film that we knew was coming. Steven Spielberg has been circling a few projects since he finished up directing his part(s) of a Tin Tin movie with Peter Jackson. We've heard that his long-planned movie about Lincoln is still on the way, but the real news is that his current priority seems to be a remake of Harvey.

Harvey, if you haven't heard this news before, is a 1950 film based on a Pulitzer-prize winning play that featured Jimmy Stewart as an everyman who happened to have an invisible rabbit as his best friend.

Speilberg said he'd like to remake the project, which immediately sent shock waves of rumors through blogging and film circles about what kind of star could replace the charisma of Jimmy Stewart in his prime. The initial thoughts were the expected ones: Tom Hanks and Will Smith, but a single trade reported today in a single line, nestled amongst a story of Spielberg chasing the Lincoln script:

"Spielberg is presently focusing on his 'reimagining' of 'Harvey,' with Robert Downey Jr. possibly playing the man who sees an invisible rabbit."

Will Robert Downey Jr play Harvey too broad? Spielberg and the Iron Man star will be working together, sort of, in the near future on Cowboys and Aliens, which Spielberg is producing and Downey Jr stars in under director Jon Favreau.

But RDJr and a giant rabbit? Is Downey becoming the younger Tom Hanks?

With this news, I'm sure that Cassablanca, To Have and Have Not, It's a Wonderful Life and Philadelphia Story can't be too far behind. Sigh....

Actually, in the '50's there was a musical version of Philadelphia Story. It had Grace Kelly as Tracy, Frank Sinatra as Mike, and Bing Crosby as C.K Dexter Haven. Didn't know if you knew that or not.

Back to thread, watch them remake To Kill a Mockingbird, too. Idiots.

Actually, the movie "Harvey" was remade for television, back in the 1950s.
Art Carney starred in that version of Mary Ellen Chase's comedy. In fact, I
saw that one before I saw a telecast of the original theatrical version starring James Stewart.

As soon as I posted that, I remembered the remake! I was just typing random titles and didn't feel like editing it! There was also a remake of my all time favorite, Roman Holiday, but no way will I see it. It stars Catherine Oxenberg for God's sake! Remaking an Audrey Hepburn movie is a complete tragedy!!

Remaking any of Bogie's films (i.e. Casablanca, To Have and Have Not) would also be a tragedy!
