Barry Manilow, matinee idol?
Single Cell partners Sandy Stern and Michael Stipe and Playtone partners Gary Goetzman and Tom Hanks have joined forces to develop a romantic comedy that will exploit the song catalogue of singer/songwriter Barry Manilow. Manilow's manager, Garry Kief, will also produce.

Deal follows Sony's recent deal to make a theatrical release of rehearsal footage from Michael Jackson's final concert, and Disney's negotiations to make a Robert Zemeckis-directed "Yellow Submarine" remake in performance capture 3-D that will use classic Beatles songs.

Manilow has pledged his support, and songs, to the project. The producers will first take the project to Universal, where Playtone has its first-look deal.

Though Playtone produced the U blockbuster "Mamma Mia!," the idea for the film is closer in tone to "Love Actually." Characters will not follow a plot and burst into song, as Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and others did with Abba tunes in "Mamma Mia!"

The project was hatched by Stern, who hooked Manilow with the idea of making a character-driven romantic comedy with intersecting storylines involving Manilow fans who are all arriving in Las Vegas on a weekend where Manilow will headline at the Mandalay Bay. His music will be heard throughout the movie. Manilow will also perform a song or two in the film.

Manilow, who was repped in the deal by WME, will be a collaborator in shaping the project once a writer is hired. This is the first time Manilow has given access to his catalogue for a film.

Troy Queen and Mark Grove will also be involved as producers.

I can see the plot of this movie now. A girl works as a dancer in the same club where her boyfriend tends bar. Then a handsome stranger comes into the club, watches her dance, and invites her over to his table for a drink afterwords. Her boyfriend flies across the bar in a jealous rage and then a gunshot rings out. But just who shot who? Find out when this movie comes to a theater near you!

If Tom Hanks is involved I might rent this when it comes to DVD. Very rarely do I see a movie in the theater. I love Tom Hanks. I have a friend who is a die hard Mannilow fan and she would love to hear this news! She even got to meet him once!

Hey, give the guy some credit. His music may not be to everybody's liking but just the fact that he's still "kicking it", with the ever changing music business, and he's always been the butt of alot of jokes over the years for his sappy music. I admire him for keeping at it.

A movie though? Not sure about that. I don't know why they didn't just start out with a Broadway show first to see how that does, like with Mamma Mia & Movin' Out.

Uh...not really. Half of the songs on this list are from the last ten years, and Barry's mainly put out cover albums (such as "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties/Sixties/Seventies/Eighties") over the last ten or so years.

Also, "Could It Be Magic" wasn't written by Chopin. It is based on one of his preludes, but the main melody and all of the lyrics were written by Manilow and Adrienne Anderson.

When someone refers to "Barry Manilow's Music," they're referring to his hits from the 70s and early 80s:

Yeah, most of those songs were written by others, and one or two may have been more successful when sung by others, but these are all pretty much Barry's songs. All of them hit the Top 10 or better of the Adult Contemporary chart and most of them hit the Top 20 or better of the Hot 100.

I didn't feel like editing the list and you're right about the time period for his songs but every song Barry recorded during the 70's and 80's was a cover except for:

If you still believe that the 26 songs you named are all original Barry Manilow recordings then I suggest you take your argument to the source I got the info from Second Hand Songs (http://www.secondhandsongs.com) Barry Manilow is just like Eric Clapton (solo career) and Linda Ronstadt, They very rarely record their own material and have spent a lifetime getting rich of someone else.

I agree that Barry made most of the songs his own and I would say that most people would only know his versions but a cover is still a cover no matter what and I'm referring to the hits he had during the 70's and 80's not the more recent covers.

That's not my intent, I know very well that Barry isn't the only artist that has recorded cover songs. Like I said earlier, Some singers have a made a living doing covers. I was only trying to point out that the term Barry's songs was not entirely correct.

Charles, I think I should mention that I am admitting to being a "Fanilow". Have been since I was a kid. Even when I got into hard rock & heavy metal, I still loved Barry's music. Yes, it is sappy, but I don't care. I guess I got a little put off of the comments about him, so I apologize. Like I said, I don't like arguing, either, especially with you.;)

Although I'm not much of a fan of the "cover" CDs he's put out in the past 10 years.

BTW, didn't know I Write the Songs was a cover?!!:eek:

I checked again and it appears that some of the titles that the website originally listed as being covers have been removed from their database. The ones in this list that are not identified as being covers I'll give credit to Barry until someone can prove otherwise.

That site doesn't seem to list songs that have never been covered, only songs that have indeed been covered, so I don't think it's really meant to be a source of an artist's discography more than it is a source of what they've covered and who has covered them.

The Captain and Tennille didn't originally record I Write the Songs. Them, Barry, and David Cassidy all recorded versions of it at around the same time in 1975 before any version of it was released on album or as a single. Cassidy's version was released first in '75 and charted in the UK, and Barry's was released a few months later.

I think it's kinda unfair to say that people who do mainly covers are getting rich off of someone else. Trust me, the people who wrote those songs are getting rich no matter who sings them. I'm sure they welcome it when established artists choose to sing their songs because it means they're probably going to make lots and lots of money.

I've been doing this for over 30 years so I'm not exactly a novice when it comes to music. I certainly don't claim to be the brightest bulb in the chandelier where this subject is concerned but I'm definitely not the dimmest.
