BREAKING: Ellen DeGeneres named new permanent American Idol judge

Emmy-winning comic will replace Paula Abdul on TV's most popular show
Published on Wednesday, Sep 9, 2009 By Daniel Fienberg

In a shocking afternoon announcement on Wednesday (Sept. 9), FOX revealed that Ellen DeGeneres has joined "American Idol" as the popular talent show's permanent fourth judge.

DeGeneres will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi on the judging panel following the audition rounds, replacing long-time "American Idol" regular Paula Abdul, who abruptly departed the show this summer.

"I could not be more excited to have Ellen join the American Idol family," said creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. "Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel. I can’t wait for this next season to begin."

Added executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz, "We're all delighted to have Ellen join our ninth season of American Idol. Beyond her incredible sense of humor and love of music, she brings with her an immense warmth and compassion that is almost palpable. She is one of America’s foremost entertainers, and we cannot wait to have her join our team."

DeGeneres has been a been revered stand-up comic, a successful TV star and producer, an Emmy-winning talk show host and she's no stranger to serving as a FOX reality show judge, having guested on "So You You Think You Can Dance?" this summer.

While FOX made its formal announcement late Wednesday afternoon, a select group of people had already learned the news when DeGeneres announced it at a taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

"I'm not leaving here," DeGeneres reassured the audience, in an episode airing on Thursday. "Don't worry about that. I'm going to have a day job and a night job. The times we're living... in we're all doing that. This is so exciting for me. We've been dealing with this for the last couple of weeks and I've been dying to tell everyone. It's just been so hard to keep it a secret and we just finally got the ok and I'm so excited. It is going to be so much fun.

I don't know how it happened myself but I have not missed one episode of that show. I've watched every single thing. I love everything about it and I love music, as you know. Hopefully I'm the people's point of view because I'm just like you. I sit at home and I watch it and I don't have that technical.. .I'm not looking at it in a critical way from the producer's mind. I'm looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person. So I'm hopefully going to be that voice of what we're all doing at home."

While this will be a new role on "American Idol" for DeGeneres, she isn't exactly a total neophyte, having co-hosted the show's "Idol Give Back" telethon events.

In the formal FOX press release, DeGeneres adds, "I’m thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol. I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote."

After eight seasons as judge, Abdul ended her "American Idol" tenure in a series of messages posted to Twitter on Aug. 4. Soon after, FOX announced that while Abdul would eventually be replaced by a full-time judge, a series of guest judges would take her place for the audition rounds. Simon, Randy and Kara will team up with Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Shania Twain for those auditions.

"We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres join the American Idol judges’ table this season," says FOX's President for Alternative Programming Mike Darnell. "She is truly one of America’s funniest people and a fantastic performer who understands what it’s like to stand up in front of audiences and entertain them every day. We feel that her vast entertainment experience – combined with her quick wit and passion for music – will add a fresh new energy to the show."

As much as I despise the term, I have to say that this show has officially jumped the shark.

Not that I watch this junk anyway, but I like Ellen, and it's weird as hell having her as a American Idol judge. I just can't picture her being a judge on these types of shows lol.

Wow. Didn't see this coming at all. I'm gonna miss Paula. Sometimes thought she was more entertaining than the singers. I do like Ellen but don't think I'll like her on this. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I might could see Ellen as a judge on America's Got Talent or Dancing with the Stars but not "Idol"

I can't picture her judging this type of show, but who knows. She might surprise us.

At least she's more intelligent and "with it" than Paula is

This has to be the dumbest decision since CBS gave Katie Couric the anchor's chair on the CBS Evening News.

It shouldn't take much intelligence to be a judge on "Idol."

Idol is doing fine - why are they so desperate for ratings? First the Paula thing, then all the guest judges, and now Ellen getting a PERMANENT slot???? And it says she's inked a FIVE YEAR deal. With Ellen being the 4th judge, no way in hell is Idol lasting 5 more seasons. I'm not even sure I'll be watching it this seems - with Paula gone and everything that has happened, it's become unwatchable.

I agree, this is an awful decision. I don't even know why they need 4 judges anyway. The show was doing amazing with just three.

What the hell does Ellen have to do with music?

Seems like the problems started when Kara was added. Without her, Paula would have gotten the raise she wanted and all would have been good.

Have you heard Ellen sing before? She's not terrible, but she's not good either. It's absurd how they picked her to be a judge, while they should have just left it at the guest judges and continued the season with just 3.

I mean, can you even picture Ellen on Idol? I don't get it - this season is bound to be a disaster from the getgo.

No Julie, I can't picture Ellen on Idol. And I also can't picture Ellen ansd Simon working together either!

I like Ellen. But I don't think she really has the background or credits to be an Idol judge.

So I guess Ellen is qualified to be an American Idol judge simply because she has had pretty much every contestant on her show (win or lose) since I can remember? Yeah, that makes sense! Just another reason for me NOT to watch American Idol.

I didn't even think about that, lol. I can already tell Ellen, being the commediene she is, is going to turn everything into a joke. How in the world is she going to give a critique on someone's vocal ability? I wouldn't be surprised to see Simon give her the boot a few episodes in, lol.

Yeah, I can definitely see Simon getting tired of Ellen's sense of humor and at least threatening to turf her from the show, lol.

Will Ellen still be doing her talk show now that she is a judge on American Idol?

Great, one of my favorite reality shows will soon turn into "The Ellen DeGeneres Show Jr." Fail fail fail fail fail fail fail. I do not want her on this show, and if she ever gets up to do her ridiculous "dancing," I'd probably cry.

They should have just never added Kara. Paula, Simon, and Randy. That's it. That's all you needed. Nobody asked for a fourth judge.

Speaking of Kara, what exactly are her musical "credentials"?

Speaking of Kara, what exactly are her musical "credentials"?

She is a professional songwriter for Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Hilary Duff... among others.

She is also the current VP of Warner Bros. Records A&R (talent scouting).

She became a songwriter after her own music career was not succeeding.

Ah, I see, thanks. I had no idea who she was until she hooked up with Idol.
