Watching the skits now, it's apparent that Ernie is a mentally-challenged young man and Bert is paid off by somebody to allow Ernie to live with him.

Schmoopie 09-10-2009, 04:15 AM I just read in the book Sesame Street Unpaved that Bert and Ernie are supposed to be like Felix and Oscar on the Odd Couple. It didn't really say that but it did say that the reason that Bert and Ernie have different stripes on their shirts (Ernie's being horizontal and Bert's being vertical) is because of their personalities. I watched a new episode of Sesame Street a few weeks ago and they have really ruined Ernie. He was wearing a backwards cap and was wearing a vest. I guess they want to make him look more like today's kids, but I prefer him just wearing his striped shirt. This stuff about them being gay is beyond ridiculous. No offense to anyone; I've read it all over the Net. howierules86 09-10-2009, 12:25 PM No way. I think it's just a myth. I think it's great you care enough about the show to take this thread so seriously, but it's obvious to me that everyone who responded to this thread doesn't actually think that Ernie and Bert are gay; they are commenting (through satire) on the absurdity of the entire concept. Exactly. Thank you. This post was meant as a satire. If you don't find it funny or understand it, then don't bother reading it. If I offended anyone, then that's their problem. Nighthawk76 09-10-2009, 06:11 PM like i give a **** about that Just like everyone else, you are certainly intitled to your opinion, but you really should lay off of Kristen. I don't think Kristen started this thread to bash either classic kid shows or gay people. I think she was just having a little fun and this thread should be taken in the spirit it was intended. I don't think anyone here actually thinks Bert and Ernie were meant to be gay. phoebe7165 09-10-2009, 06:27 PM Just like everyone else, you are certainly intitled to your opinion, but you really should lay off of Kristen.
