The 2009 NFL season does not kick off officially until Thursday, but we've already got a rising team -- that is, according to the latest poll of our experts.

If the Seattle Seahawks continue to skyrocket the ESPN.com NFL Power Rankings at the rate they've been climbing this year, expect them to be our No. 1 team by, say, Week 3.

The Seahawks, 4-12 during an injury-riddled 2008 campaign, are No. 15 in the Week 1 edition of our rankings. So what, you say? In May, the Seahawks ranked 22nd. In our Training Camp edition published in July, the birds in blue were 18th. They finished last season ranked 28th.

Instead of 12 experts weighing in weekly, we have four who will cast their votes. See the glossary below for details.

The first four spots remain unchanged from our Training Camp edition. The San Diego Chargers and Indianapolis Colts flip-flopped the Nos. 5-6 spots.

I agree with our ranking. I think we either could be # 3 or 4, flip flopping with the Giants.

It's nice to see a team that plays out here in the pacific northwest getting some respect around the league. Go Hawks!!!

The Giants should not be in the Top 5

Don't care. Pre-Season rankings are worthless. Last year the Cowboys were picked to go the SB and look what happened. I sort of wish we were picked lower than 17th. Maybe that'll motivate the team. lol

That's your reasoning? lol.

Where's Arizona? 13th? They should be at least in the Top 10. Not just because they made the SB last season, they have a good team.

They have no defense. That was evident by how they blew a 24-6 lead in the NFC Championship and let the Steelers drive all the way down the field during the SB with 2 min left

They've had a Top 10 defense the past 2/3 years. You base sports off of one game. They still won that game regardless, why you mad?

Yeah that was evident, and it was the SB, but they still have a good D.

Then why was the DC fired after the SB??

Then why was the DC fired after the SB??

Great question lol. I honestly couldn't tell you why. But you look at the top defenses each year, stats wise, and power rankings- they're up their. They're not by any means a Steelers or Ravens d, even the Eagles, but they have a solid core of defensive players as well. The one year, I think it was 2006, they had a top 10 defense, and a top 10 ranked offense- the ONLY team in the NFL....Besides the Colts that year who won the SB I believe.

And honestly Solomon, I think dude was fired for that final drive like you said........not because they have a bad defense.

"Forrest Gump" has a Super Bowl ring, yet Sol thinks they shouldn't be in the top 5?

Chris, that was 2 years ago lol.

What does that have to do with the Giants being # 3, or in the top 5 for THIS upcoming season?

Plus, they won the division last year, but we beat them 2/3 playoffs & reg. season, and in the playoffs, so maybe we should be # 3. I like the Eagles spot on their.

Winning a SB doesn't make you a good QB

Winning a SB doesn't make you a good QB

Agreed. It definitely boosts you as a QB, especially in Eli's case, being that he's a New York QB (that actually won a SB too, and besides Joe Namath as well), but it doesn't make you the best QB in the league, or Top 5/10 for that matter, as well.

Solomon, remember the Bears got to the SB 3 years ago against the Colts? Rex Grossman WAS their QB lol, and I can think of 500 better Quarterbacks- past and present, old and young, better then that guy. He absolutely stinks. lol I would take Kevin Kolb last year in his rookie season over Grossman any day.

I read on proofootballtalk that grossman maybe starting soon for the Texans. He has went from 3rd string to 2nd string

 Are you serious? I seriously didn't even think he was still in the NFL lol. The Texans are that desperate. They had their best season as a franchise last year- 8-8, with a good QB, why would they change it up? Stupidness is what I'm thinking .

That's gross man lol.

How awesome that would be if the Hawks were to keep that ranking! They weren't that great last year but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this year will be an awesome one!!! Hmm... another Superbowl appearance would be nice, but a win would be even better! Let's hope they keep up the good playing in the regular season!
