View Full Version : Mr. Belvedere Season 3 DVD
TV_Fan 09-05-2009, 04:27 PM I bought the set today (a retailer had it out early). So far everything looks great. The prints mostly look clear on the first few episodes I've watched already. They appear to be unedited (at leats the ones so far and I seriously doubt any others will be edited). The episode "Debut aka Close Call" has all the music that was sang by George, Marsha & guest star Robert Goulet so I doubt there's any music issues. There does appear to be a glitch, at least on the first episode. If you click on the menu to have the episodes listing come and play the first episode, the first scene skips. If you click "play all" from the main menu it only skips about the first second. If you click "play all" from the episode listing it still skips the first scene. The scene is there, you just have to click back on your remote.
I don't remember for sure what the opening theme was for season three, but the one on the DVd set is definitely than the first two seasons. The closing theme features the jazzy music, so I'm guessing the openings & closings are correct. It does not appear Bob Uecker is included on the commentary, at least not that I've seen so far on the first disc.
Vahan 09-05-2009, 04:47 PM Chris, the opening credits for season 3 showed Tracy Wells (with short hair) with her hand resting on her chin, and was also 55 seconds like the previous two versions were.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dbe1mJc1uic (is this the version that's on the DVD? It's the first clip in this montage)
Also, is this the version of the ending theme that's on the DVD? (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/sounds/mrbelvedere-1986ending.wav)
TV_Fan 09-05-2009, 05:54 PM Yup, that's them.
Vahan 09-05-2009, 05:58 PM Chris, I mentioned a few times that the Robert Goulet episode from season 3 was the one I was looking forward to the most. I have a couple of questions about that episode:
1) In the cast commentary for that episode, do they actually talk about Ilene Graff's career as a singer? I have a feeling that may have played a part in the making of that episode.
2) Can you please tell me all the songs that were performed in that episode, and is Gershwin's "Our Love is Here to Stay" one of them?
catlover79 09-05-2009, 07:02 PM I can't wait to see this set. THIS SHOW RULES!! :D

Ilene does mention it in the commentary, but doesn't get too into it. She said Robert Goulet was surprised & happy that she sang so well, not knowing her skills beforehand.
I don't know the names/can't remember all the songs at the moment. There were a few of them. Yes, "Our Love Is Here To Stay" is definitely in there. In the final scene Belvedere sings "Me And My Shadow". George sings part of "My Kind Of Town". I'll check again for the others when I can.
TV_Fan 09-05-2009, 07:48 PM I can't wait to see this set. THIS SHOW RULES!! :D
Absolutely! This is one show where I can sit through episode after episode almost non stop. The "Grandma" episode with the Alzeheimer's is very touching.

Me too!
Vahan 09-05-2009, 08:11 PM I actually saw both the "Grandma" episode and the "Halloween" episode on the internet, long before the season 3 DVD came out. The former was a syndicated version, while the latter was a network version.
TV_Fan 09-05-2009, 08:13 PM Can you please tell me all the songs that were performed in that episode, and is Gershwin's "Our Love is Here to Stay" one of them?
Ok, the songs in the episode are:
"On A Clear Day"- George starts singing at the house , then Robert Goulet sings a line or two
"My Kind Of Town"- George sings a few lines at the club
"Come Fly With Me"- George sings a few lines at the club
"Shaddap You Face"- George sings a few lines at the club
"Our Love Is Here To Stay"-George & Marsha do a duet, then Marsha & Robert Goulet do a duet and steal the show
"Me And My Shadow"-Belvedere sings a few lines & dances with his shadow after writing in his journal in the final scene.

Sounds like a great ep. I can't wait to watch it!

Whoa. That's a lot of songs. Kudos to Shout! Factory for going through all the trouble just to clear those songs. I don't think Fox would ever have done that had they released season 3 of Mr. Belvedere themselves.
And I'm surprised that Shout cleared "On a Clear Day". As a fan of the Naked Gun movies (Mr. Goulet was in the second movie as Quentin Hapsburg), I was somewhat surprised when I found out that Paramount edited out the scene where he sang that song.

It is. So far all the eps I've watched on this set are great!

Shout! definitely did a great job clearing the music. In another ep George sings a few lines of a song (can't remember which or which song) and we all know if this were Paramount or pretty much anyone else, the scene would be edited out. Paramount doesn't even try when it comes to clearing music.
I agree, Fox probably wouldn't have gone through the trouble if they released it themselves. Luckily then didn't. It didn't seem like they ever had any intention to. All I can say is thank God for Shout!
catlover79 09-05-2009, 11:11 PM Absolutely! This is one show where I can sit through episode after episode almost non stop. The "Grandma" episode with the Alzeheimer's is very touching.
I think I remember that ep. Still, from the previous set, I loved The Young Savages and Snow White and Terminator being on a double bill at the drive in.
Vahan 09-06-2009, 12:30 PM Here's something else I was wondering (and I thank Mcfly121 for bringing this up on IMDB).
The episode "Reunion" has a scene where Wesley parodies Tom Cruise dancing to Old Time Rock and Roll (which was, of course, first seen in the movie Risky Business). The version of the song used in that episode was not the original, but a cover version recorded for the show (presumably because the original was too expensive to afford at the time this episode was being made).
My question is, is that scene and the cover version of that song still in that episode?
TV_Fan 09-06-2009, 03:17 PM My question is, is that scene and the cover version of that song still in that episode?
To put it in the words of Prego's famous commercials: "It's in there."
Vahan 09-06-2009, 03:23 PM Thanks Chris. Can't wait to see the season 3 episodes.
I'm also looking forward to the one episode where Wesley feels unwanted and runs away after he hears Marsha say that she might be expecting another baby, and the one where George gets fired from his job.
I read a summary of the former on Gerry A.'s geocities site before the season 3 DVD came out. A very bittersweet episode it was.
The latter had a very young Jaleel White as a guest-star. It was also the first time a regular cast member of Mr. B (in this case Tracy Wells) did not appear on the show. Christopher, Ilene, and Brice were the only cast members to appear in all 117 episodes of the series (including the ones that never aired on ABC).
TV_Fan 09-06-2009, 05:24 PM I'm really enjoying this set. I forgot Doris Roberts guest starred in the deportation episode. I'm also looking forward to seeing the episode where Wes feels unwanted. I think I only saw it when it origianlly aired. I didn't remember Jaleel White in the ep where George is fired. Lokk forward to watching it.
I'm already halfway done with the set. I was most looking forward to seeing the Alzheimer's episode. This will be yet another set that I'll be sad when I finish watching it the first time.

If I was writing this episode, I would have included a 7th song, "Black and White", and I would have Marsha sing it on her own and also dedicate it to Wesley's friends, Beth and Charlie (Stacy Ferguson and Rahsaan Patterson) as a tribute to their blossoming relationship.
TV_Fan 09-13-2009, 10:00 AM Ok, the songs in the episode are:

Forgot to add "Till There Was You" George sings a few lines on the porch
A total of 7 songs cleared for 1 episode. Shout! did a great job on this set.
The commentaries were very interesting with a lot of behind the scenes details and trivia. It was interesting how they had 3-4 different ending themes of various lengths that they could use depending on how long that week's episode ran.
TV_Fan 09-14-2009, 11:06 AM Exactly. Those were the best commentaries I've heard in a long time.

Finally, a while back I noticed that in "The Outcasts", Mr. Belvedere says that he's been with the Owens' "For a month", while in "Gotta Dance", he says that he's been with them "For a few days". This might explain why "Gotta Dance" was the 2nd taped episode, while "The Outcasts" was the 3rd.

gerrya 10-23-2009, 06:45 AM I never realized how much of a big deal clearing music is on DVDs. In many commentaries I've heard before people were very careful not to sing anything. Even in the commentaries here on the Season 3 set, they were very careful not to sing.
Speaking of the commentaries, I just love hearing from the cast about the inner workings of the show. I first saw these episodes many many years ago, and now that I'm older, certain things that weren't funny before are hysterical now. Specially those scenes with sexual innuendo I can finally understand.
You just know when they run into one of those because the cast starts to laugh hysterically and Brice says, "oh yeah".
Since all six commentaries seem to have been recorded back to back one after the other, I find it funny that they seem to get looser as time went on.
"The Crush" is a favorite episode of mine and it's still is now. I had such a huge crush on Michele Matheson back then, and got kind of hot and bothered, very much like Kevin did in the bedroom scene. Watching it again I can see sparks of a brilliant actress in there, which was easy to overlook because she played such a dumb character. But as the cast pointed out, Michele is actually rather intelligent. In fact, she's a published author, and a member of a rock band. She's had a very colorful life since her time on Mr. Belvedere. Anyone seen her short film Johnny Flynton? She's great in it, and it's free to watch at IMDB.
TV_Fan 10-23-2009, 11:31 PM I never knew anything else about Michele's life after Mr Belvedere until I listened to the commentaries. I had no idea she was did so much after the show. I guess she was overlooked.
Those commentaries were really great & I hope they do more on the next set. It would also be great if they could get Bob Uecker too. I'd also love to see anything involving the producers as well.
And yeah, if this wasn't Shout! all those scenes with music/singing probably would have been cut from the DVD.

I always love commentaries - so I will be listening for sure. :D I can't wait to watch this set!!
catlover79 11-20-2009, 01:51 PM I finally got the set from the library and am watching it now. I have to admit, I'm cheating and watching the eps with the commentaries first. I am loving them!! My only disappointment is that Bob Uecker isn't involved. But it sounds like the cast is still close and has tons of fun together. Once I'm done with the commentaries, I am going to go back and watch the set from the beginning. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!! :D :D :D
P.S. I'm glad someone brought up the many clocks. I was waiting for someone to make a comment about that, and one of them did as soon as I thought about it!! There seem to be fewer clocks in the living room than the last set - anyone else notice that?
