After 18 children, Michelle Duggar thought she knew what it feels like to be pregnant. But even she was caught by surprise to learn that just eight months after she gave birth to Jordyn-Grace, Duggar baby No. 19 is on the way.

“We are thrilled to announce that we found out we’re expecting our 19th child,” a glowing Michelle Duggar told TODAY’s Meredith Vieira Tuesday from the family’s home in Springdale, Ark.

Michelle and family patriarch Jim Bob Duggar sat on the staircase of their home, surrounded by their 18 other children. Behind them and in the center were eldest son Josh and his wife, Anna, who is expecting the first Duggar grandchild — a girl — on Oct. 18.

The name game
They, too, had an announcement: They’ve settled on a name for their baby, and it starts with an M.

Vieira had been holding out hope that the girl would be named for her. “Obviously I would love that. It would make me a very happy person,” she said.

But it is not to be: Josh and Anna’s baby will be christened Mackynzie Renee. (Josh has a cousin named Mackynzie, and Anna's middle name is Renee.)

However, Josh told Vieira not to despair, given the Duggar talent for having children. “There is hope for ‘Meredith’ still,” he assured her.

With just six weeks to go before delivery, Anna said, “I’m feeling good. I’m feeling really pregnant. It’s neat. It’s exciting. I definitely have great role models, and it’s neat to watch Mrs. Duggar teach and love her children.”

“Children are a blessing and a gift if you raise them right, and I think my parents have definitely shown that,” added Josh.

Although she was smiling and chipper, Michelle said she’s dealing with the usual first-trimester nausea. “I’m feeling sick and tired, which is a good way to be feeling about right now,” she told Vieira. “I always tell myself that’s a good way to be, because that means good things are happening.”

“We are so excited about this new arrival, and also our grandbaby coming,” added Jim Bob.

Running the numbers
The number 18 is big with the family right now. Not only do they have 18 children, the newest baby is due on March 18. Josh and Anna’s child is due on Oct. 18. And Jim Bob celebrated his birthday on July 18.

The Duggars, who star in the long-running reality show “18 Kids and Counting” on TLC, will have a grandchild who is older than their own child.

Vieira asked if that would be strange.

“My sister and my mother were having babies at the same time, so I have nieces and nephews older than me,” said Michelle, who is the youngest of seven. “It was a great time because we really have close relationships with my nieces and nephews.”

The newest Duggar is coming a bit ahead of schedule. The average gap between the children is 18 months, and Michelle was just eight months away from giving birth to Jordyn when she noticed her body wasn’t quite right: She was following the Weight Watchers program to shed the weight she’d put on in her latest pregnancy, but wasn’t losing any pounds. Also, Jordyn would fuss every time she nursed, which wasn’t normal.

Michelle said those two clues should have registered, but they didn’t. Finally, she took a home pregnancy test and learned that, at the age of 42, she was pregnant again.

Michelle has now been pregnant 147 months of her life, with five more to go. That’s 12-plus years and counting.

For those who are counting, the Duggars report that they have changed an estimated 90,000 diapers and do approximately 200 loads of laundry a month. They feed their entire family on less than $2,000 a month and say that they live debt-free.

Jim Bob Duggar has one sibling and Michelle is the youngest of seven. When they got married, they thought they’d have two or three children. Not wanting to have a child immediately, Michelle went on the birth control pill as they waited three years to have their first child, Josh, who is now married and expecting his first child.

After Josh was born, Michelle went back on the pill. She got pregnant anyway and suffered a miscarriage, which her physician told them was probably caused by the pill. As conservative Christians, they decided after that to let God decide how many children they would have.

They adhere to a Christian movement called Quiverfull, whose members take seriously the biblical exhortation to be fruitful and multiply and believe that every child is a gift from Providence.

All the children are home-schooled and all learn to play the violin and piano. The older children help raise the younger ones under a buddy system. Jim Bob, a former state legislator, is involved in a number of businesses, including commercial real estate.

Dang. That means when #19 comes in the spring, they're going to have to change the title of their show AGAIN. It was "17 and Counting" at its premiere. When Jordyn came along, ta-da! "18 and Counting." Soon... "19 and Counting."

They never cease to amaze me. Bless the Duggars. I'm actually curious as to what they plan to name #19.

(here's food for thought... The first time Michelle got pregnant was mid-1987, since Josh is a March 1988 baby. Imagine still being able to get pregnant, over 22 years later!)

That's nice Michelle. You think it's going to rain this weekend?

Bob has a good real estate business and from I've read they do bargain shop a lot for things. They make some of their clothes and sometimes shop at thrift stores. I really don't care for their reality show but they seem like good people. Last year after the youngest child was born I read on comment sections of an article that several obstercians in their area refuse to have Michelle as a patient due to a few past c-sections.

Michelle HAS been on birth control.

They got married on July 21, 1984, so the fact they waited 3 years to get pregnant fits in... Josh was born on March 3, 1988, which means he would have been conceived around June 11, 1987.

Jim Bob owns a real estate business. I know many people in real estate deals with hard times. Now that Michelle is older there are more risks of having a disabled child and that can cause a lot of financial hardships for a family.

Part of their real estate business is rental properties .But like others have mentioned real estate isn't in the black these days. I have also read that they do receive money from their reality show and that the house they live in was built with some money from TLC.

Good for them. Freedom of choice, it works both ways. I'm sure they're all set financially from their show on TLC. I read they make 50 thousand per episode, and they probably air 24 episodes a season, so that's a lot of money. I also see books and DVDs in stores. They're not a drain on anyone. They do it on their own. I've watched shows on this family. The kids are all well-behaved, and there's a lot of love in that home. I think the number of kids they have is their own business.

What you said!! Plus I am sure that the children who are adults now (I think there are 4 total who are over 18 now) are doing things of their own. I know Josh has been for years. He graduated from HS shortly after he turned 16 in 2004 (only ONE year after I did -- I graduated in 2003, when I was 17, three months from turning 18!). Jim Bob had already been teaching him what he needed to know about running a business, and he started operating his own used car lot at 16. I know John-David helps out too... Don't remember if he's one of the co-owners or what. So Josh has had it made out for himself for quite a while, long before he met/married Anna.

One of the things the Duggars teach their children to do is to be self-sufficient. So I'm sure they're far less of a drain on society than, say, a single ****ty mom who has 6 children, all by different ****ty fathers who are absent from their kids' lives, and can't keep her legs closed and is currently pregnant with #7 and #8. Just sayin'.

There is this documentary I see occasionally that reruns on one of the Discovery channels (any one of them) about the Healy family. Siobhan and Kit Healy, I believe. Siobhan is, shall I say, very fertile. She's originally from Germany, if I recall correctly, and hooked up with this black American soldier who was serving in Germany when she was in her early 20s. They got married, she got pregnant and they ended up having 6 kids together before she hit 30. Then she met Kit (20+ years older than her) and guess what... they ended up with 7 more children together. I don't think she's 40 yet. I think Siobhan bore two or three sets of twins, can't remember. THAT family... Holy cow. I disagree far more with their standard of living than I do the Duggars. They figured out what works for them. Siobhan can't even take all 13 kids out in public when she needs to go shopping, god forbid. And we all know about the Gosselins...

Sorry but it still bothers me for many reasons. There are kids in this world who would benefit from having a loving home with loving parents. They want to be fruitful: they can adopt too if they're so intent on having so many kids.

I hadn't known the parents completely ruled it out of the question for their girls to go to college. I just thought the parents left it up to the girls, but I had seen most of them saying that they wanted to be housewives and mothers. Gosh, the mother is an idiot for having another child not too long after the #18 baby was born. If she's trying to get into the guiness book of world records as having the most babies i'm sure she has beat the record. She needs to learn how to keep her legs closed and raise up the younger ones she already has instead of making the older kids take care of the younger kids! Sure it teaches the older kids responsibility, but they need their alone time too! Give it a rest, Michelle Duggar!

I also agree the parents should've chosen adoption when deciding to add more children to their ever-growing family. There are plenty of kids all over the world who are wanting to be a part of a loving home.

One Duggar flies the coop and another arrives! The large family known for their TLC show, The Duggars: 17 and Counting (http://old.lilsugar.com/tags/The+Duggars%3A+17+Kids+and+Counting) has had an eventful year. First born Joshua got married in September. (Tune in tonight to watch the wedding, which includes the 21-year-old's first kiss with his wife, Anna.) Then just before Christmas, baby Jordyn made her debut as number 18!

Despite their hectic lives and sleep deprivation, parents Jim Bob and Michelle took time to write a book, The Duggars: 20 and Counting! (http://tlc.discovery.com/tv/17-kids-and-counting/duggar-family.html) and carved time out of their schedules to talk to me about it. While their oldest son settles down to start a life and family of his own, Jim Bob and Michelle still have plenty of charges. They shared their thoughts on the future and how they are preparing their offspring for the real world. Aside from helping build the home they live in, the Duggar kids have been taught everything from plumbing to tile work and learned about politics while sitting in on committee meetings when their father was a state legislator in Arkansas. Other youngsters have the business inkling having built and sold bikes and eventually motorized vehicles for as long as their parents can remember.

lilsugar: Josh is now married and living with his wife, but in regards to your other children at what age would you encourage them to move out and become independent?

To see their answer and thoughts on modest dressing and setting their girls up for success, read more.

Jim Bob Duggar: When each of our children move out really has to do with what the Lord has in store for their lives. I would not want a married son or daughter living with us I mean unless it was a crisis type situation. I'd want them to have their own place because they are their own family unless maybe at an older age we may be living with them (laughs).

Michelle Duggar: At this point, I don't think we have anyone who wants to get out and thinks we're driving them nuts. Even Josh and Anna, they come this way and accompany us on some trips.

Jim Bob Duggar: As far as my children, my goal, especially for my sons is to be able to develop skills so they can hopefully provide for their families in the future. I also want my daughters to develop skills so they can provide if they had to. Some of my daughters may get nursing degrees. My sons, it really depends on their interests. My second oldest son (John-David) really wants to be a pilot so instead of him moving out on his own and spending all his money on paying for his apartment and expenses, I'd rather him go and save up and get his pilot's license and then start saving up for a house or make some kind of investment in business where he doesn't have any overhead so he can save up money and really get a good start.

Michelle Duggar: We taught our children from the very beginning that you never stop learning in life. School is never over. When you have that perspective, it's not the traditional way of viewing it. There are people who are out there and they are professionals at what they do and if you are a hard worker and have good character — are honest, responsible — there's many people that would be glad to have someone like that to work along side them. You can gain skills while you are being paid. A lot of trades, you may decide you like this right now, but go to work with somebody who does that and you'll find out if you really like it. There's so many people who go to college and turn right around and not use what they went to college for and this way, you're thinking it through.

lilsugar: In such a progressive society where many parents, especially mothers, are encouraging their daughters to be tough enough to make their own way in the world, your show often features your girls taking the homemaker and child rearing roles. Do you think they will be able to provide for themselves if they don't marry?

Michelle Duggar: Our girls are go-getters. No matter what, I know they could do that if they wanted to or needed to, but in their hearts, they would love to marry and lord willing if they had children to stay at home and raise their families. I've got a couple of them talking about going for their real estate licenses and about getting their CDL licenses because they want to be able to drive some of our big equipment. Believe me, my girls are not Namby Pamby. They've got goals and the desire to do things.

lilsugar: Do any of the girls object to the modest clothing? I liked Jessa's quote in the book that said teenagers all wear the same thing and nobody is bothered by it.

Michelle Duggar: We do a lot of that the perms and make-up. I think it was our producer who said the girls have sort of their own thing going, it's a "modern modest". That's a good way to dub it I guess. I told my kids, (growing up) I mowed the lawn in a bikini and had no idea what I was doing to my neighbor's husband across the street. No wonder the woman hated our family — you know? And, I think I had no clue as far as the responsibility I had in that the way I dressed caused men to have struggles. They (the girls) want to dress modest to draw attention to their face and not the other parts of their bodies that seem to be uncovered now a days. As far as wearing dresses, skirts and things, that was a conviction that the Lord placed on my heart and he knew the struggles of my heart from growing up Whether my girls continue that in their lives, it's up to them.

^It's good that some of the girls are interested in working in real estate. Also real estate can be an up and down career.

I agree with you on that. I do think the buddy system the family has is a bit unfair to the older kids. It's good to teach kids responsibility but every kid deserves alone time and time to have fun for themselves.

I read somewhere that her limit is 20 kids. But as I said before, as long as they can afford it, they should have as many kids as they want.

LOL, typical Arkansas. Everybody knows that everybody in Arkansas are hicks and people there get married to their cousins.

And what were the guys smoking when they came up with the town name Texarkana? "OK, this town sits on the TX/AR border. Let's name it Texarkana in both TX and AR to mess with everybody's heads!"

Is that better? :D

She's not even close.

Most prolific mother ever The greatest recorded number of children born to one mother is 69, to the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev (Russia). In 27 pregnancies between 1725 and 1765 she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins,

7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets. Only two of the children failed to survive their infancy. The mother also holds the records for giving birth to the most sets of twins and the most sets of quadruplets.

I thought the episode where Jim Bob and Michelle go to San Francisco (LOL) for their wedding anniversary was hilarious. Even more hilarious when they were at Haight-Ashbury and then accidentally stepped into a head shop -- I'm not telling you guys what it is, you can just google it yourself (http://lmgtfy.com/) -- and they had no idea what kind of shop they had just gone into. And when Jim Bob ****ed up the name of Grey Goose vodka (he said it something like Grey Duck), THAT was hilarious too.

Guys, you're in your 40s. How about, ya know, doing some research on San Francisco AND what head shops are before you go?

That aside, I still stand by my belief that they're far less of a drain on society than a slutty single mom of 8 on all types of government assistance. ;)

I think that how many kids they have is their business. I can see why people would prefer them to adopt kids rather than having so many of their own.

They seem like they are hard-working people, however. And it seems like they all work together to take care of one another. I think that is commendable. As long as they work hard, care for each other and are healthy and happy then I don't see a problem.
