character because why were the producers so agressive in trying to replace him with someone who was the opposite in personality? I wonder if lots of fans disliked the Ropers which led to the spinoff. I can see how most would think that he wasn't likable which is probably why the producers said"we need someone like Don Knotts"

More Likable character-lol So did anyone think Mr. Furley was more likable than Mr. Roper?

I dunno, they both bring major lolz to me so I like them both about the same. Mr. Furley was less of a hardass, though, especially as time went on.

I don't know, but I see what you mean. The Mr. Roper character could only go so far, and Mr. Furley's character was like a shot in the arm. Maybe the producers got tired of using the Roper's character and the same jokes. I liked both in their own way, but I liked Furley by an edge.
