why did a bunch of teenagers carry around this board that was "6 and a half feet long"? When I think of teenagers gallvanting and riding around I dont picture them saying "oh yeah, I almost forgot to grab this 6 foot board, wouldnt want to forget that!".

What was the reason for it?

I agree there was premeditation. Probably back in the 80's there weren't a lot of laws about people riding in the backs of trucks.

I don't think this was pre-meditated at all. I think the guys were out (probably drinking) using the board to knock down mailboxes etc... and then the Jennifer scenario went something like this:

"Hey, look who's in front of us! It's that bleep bleep guy."

"yeah, I hate that bastard. Let's bleep him up."

So that's when they drove up behind Jennifer and the bf (can't remember his name) and swung.

I think it just happened to be a chance occurance(seeing Jennifer and the guy) and nothing was really planned...not that that made the outcome any better.

That's a good question actually (what the kids were doing with the board), but I'd guess it was premeditated. I'm sure the one guy who confronted Curtis the night before either did it, was in the truck, or had something to do with it.

My guess is that they were intending to get Curtis instead of Jen, but probably were reckless as well as so p*ssed at him they didn't really care who they got. Tragically it's just that she had to suffer for the stuff he was involved in. :(

I do remember riding in the back of a pickup was kinda okay in the '80s, maybe even the early 90s a little bit, before they enforced laws to where you couldn't. As a kid I had this one babysitter who even had seats in the back of his truck, lol.

Drive around in the alleyways behind any decent sized builidings in any decent sized town and I'm sure you could come up with a hunk of wood like that. From a pallet or on it's own, a random hunk of wood isn't really that rare.

I agree with the posters who said they brought it ahead of time, but even if they didn't it sure wouldn't be too hard to find.

That's a great question... why they would need a board in the first place.

My theory is that one of the kids were working somewhere with close contact with planks.... and I do agree with the above poster that the wood might have been from one of those loading pallets.

There was a time when some teenagers drove through my old neighborhood with a pickup truck and used a board to hit everyone's mailbox knocking most of them off the posts. I saw a similar thing done in the film "Stand by Me" with a baseball bat. These kids could have had the board for similar mischief.

I'm pretty sure that the intention of the attackers was to inflict serious harm on Jennifer's boyfriend any which way possible.

If it wasn't a board, it could have been a pole, pipe, chain, baseball bat, etc. Whatever was available.

The board could easily have been taken from a construction site along the way or one of their friends parents shed.

You're right about that. I was a little kid in the 80's and I remember it was very common to see people riding around in the backs of trucks like that in those days.
