View Full Version : The Cartoon Network Considering just being Called, "The Network"

According to the Los Angeles Times, CN's new lineup of live-action, reality-based programming is tanking in the ratings and rumors are swirling that the CN may drop the "C" in its name.
It seems the network's animation nation aren't happy with the network's new direction. Animators are finding their work extremely frustrating and leaving the building on their own or have gotten the big ol' pink slip. The network's new direction of reality based kid shows such as Survive This, Brainrush and Destroy-Build-Destroy aren't doing any better.
Granted, the network hasn't always been a ratings giant and its Adult Swim block has been successful but hardly enough to carry an entire network. But who thought more reality shows would be a good idea? I understand that it's a successful trend, but not when every single network has one under their wing with nobody watching them. What worries me is that this trend will just repeat itself until every pay channel on my dial is just an endless string of reality shows grasping at hope of an audience.

Marvo301 08-18-2009, 10:39 PM What a brilliant idea that is! Taking the one word out of your name that tells people what kind of programs are on your network. And who in their right mind would put reality shows on "The Cartoon Network"?
Mr. Television 08-18-2009, 10:41 PM Just keep the C and call it the Crappy Network. lol
Jude The Obscure 08-18-2009, 10:56 PM Wow--has this channel gone to the dogs or what? Actually a channel about dogs would be more entertaining that what this formerly great network has become!

I'm glad I get Boomerang now. That's a much better channel.
Retro4Life 08-18-2009, 11:06 PM This is horribly disappointing. Is there no refuge from the scourge of reality programming?

Schmoopie 08-19-2009, 03:02 AM I've heard about Boomerang, but I don't think we get this station. I hate Cartoon Network, though.
comedyfreak 08-19-2009, 08:18 AM That's one more nail in CN's coffin.
MrCleveland 08-19-2009, 04:24 PM CN went down when they pulled the plug on Looney Tunes!
PunkyP0WER 08-19-2009, 05:22 PM these network execs are idiots, can't they understand that they're losing ratings because all the channels are becoming clones of each other. they are all dumping the programming that uniquely identified them to air reality shows that you can find on any other channel!!
tv land = reality shows
mtv = reality shows
vh1 = reality shows
a&e = reality shows ...and the list goes on and on.

I agree with you completely Kim. It's getting almost impossible to tell these channels apart from each other anymore.
PunkyP0WER 08-19-2009, 05:56 PM Newton Minnow commented back in 1961 that tv was a vast wasteland.
"When television is good, nothing—not the theater, not the magazines or newspapers—nothing is better.
But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there without a book, magazine, newspaper, profit and loss sheet or rating book to distract you—and keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that you will observe a vast wasteland."
I think his words can be applied to this era in tv. there are more channels than ever before and yet they're all airing the same program in essence. it reminds me of the line from my favorite Lois & Clark episode 'Tempus Fugitve', when Lane Davies describes the future to Lois "There are 9,000 channels and nothing on!"
Marvo301 08-19-2009, 06:04 PM Yes, it seems Mr. Minnow knew what he was talking about! (did you know the S.S. Minnow on Gilligan's Island was named for him?) T.V. really is a vast wasteland these days. My sister and brother-in-law have a satellite dish and get way more channels than I do and and they are always complaining that there is nothing on!

The cartoon network, or the Network may be next. My, my,my how TV had fallen.
waichingliu81 08-19-2009, 06:53 PM this channel went down the dumper when they stopped showing the classics and the quality of the replacement shows were awful. i remember watching CN back in the 90s when it aired shows such as flintstones, jetsons, top cat, loony tunes, tom and jerry to name. many of its shows were from hanna barbera. and yet when HB folded as a company, that was when things were never the same again afterwards for us cartoon fans. a couple of years onwards, it still isn't.
Scoobiedoo30 08-19-2009, 07:35 PM The Name should stay the same
catlover79 08-19-2009, 08:59 PM Just keep the C and call it the Crappy Network. lol

That title could fit for about 90% of the TV networks.
waichingliu81 08-21-2009, 05:07 PM CN Real has killed the Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network renewed its first live-action series. It's time to say farewell to what was once a great thing.
To be read in an old-man voice: Back when I was just a snot-nosed kid, there was a new cable channel called MTV (as in MUSIC Television) that showed music videos for such awesomeness as Blondie's "Rapture," Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio," and of course The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star." Decades later, finding a music video on MTV is a Herculean task, because the network is polluted with college kids trying to get into each others' pants.
The Cartoon Network is headed in the same depressing direction.
The Cartoon Network (or CN, as the brand managers would like you to say) just renewed Destroy Build Destroy, the first of the network's live-action programs to be given a second season. Which means it looks like "CN Real" (I throw up a little in my mouth every time I say that) is sticking around.
R.I.P. Cartoon Network. Time of death, August 20, 4:56 p.m.
The once-mighty channel has been ill for sometime, with programming quality declining greatly in the last few years -- especially since new president Stuart Snyder took over in 2007. The death sentence was the introduction of CN Real (blrmmph!), an attempt to bring reality television to The Cartoon Network. I repeat, CARTOON Network.
Gone are the days of The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory, and Cartoon Cartoon Fridays. Now we have quiz shows on roller coasters, pint-sized Ghost Hunters, and a Survivor rip off.
"It's a little sad," Craig McCracken, creator of The Powerpuff Girls and one of animation's leading figures, told The Los Angeles Times. "Cartoon Network had something really unique." McCracken recently left his position at Cartoon Network after 17 years on the job.
To borrow from Buggles frontman Trevor Horn, reality killed the animation star.

I agree entirely!! "Hotel," "Five-O," "MTM," "Hardcastle," and everything else I have on DVD far outstrips what's on now.
Marvo301 08-21-2009, 06:57 PM That title could fit for about 90% of the TV networks.
Sadly you've hit the nail on the head Mickey!

I'll take all those shows over the crap fouling up the airwaves now.
