I just listened to it again, for the first time in years. It surprised me how the bulk of the theme is Rhoda talking OVER the music, lol.

But yeah, I can see the carnival thing. :)

Does the theme song change in the seasons to come? I've only seen the first season.

Hmm... I don't know. I went to that television tunes site and listened to the one there. This is the link.

In any event, it's a catchy tune! :)

I went on http://rhodaonline.com and they have clips of each of the different openings (they used 4, I believe). Season 2 used the "la la las".

How can I get the later seasons as my ringtone? I would love to have the jazzy version from the last season, or the one from season 4 whenever my phone rang. Anyone know?

No offence, but I hate the la la la la version. I always thought it sounded like the Sesame Street kids singing, and I never thought of Rhoda as a childrens show. To me it just seemed odd. I'm glad they changed it to instramental in the third season.

Yeah, me too. The third season version of the theme song was my favorite from the whole series, both in the opening and closing credits. Yet, unlike all the other seasons, there doesn't seem to be a long version of this theme, at least I haven't seen one over all the years the show has been in syndication.

True, that particular clip of the alternate third season theme (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/sounds/rhoda3rdseasonalternateend.wav) is clearly from the closing of the episode. However, when I saw that episode in syndication, that same theme was used in both the opening and the closing credits. (I still have that clip on VHS and may post it online soon.) I really like that version, and it's a shame that it was only used in one or two episodes late in the third season.

I have a theory about this theme, although I could be totally wrong. My hunch is that this "alternate" version was the original one made for the third season, but that the producers went with more melancholy versions of the opening (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/sounds/rhoda3rd.wav) and closing (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/sounds/rhoda3rdending.wav) themes when they decided upon the separation/divorce storyline. The original version became the "alternate" and was burned off on an episode or two so it wouldn't go entirely to waste.

Another theory is that the "alternate" theme was recorded during the third season in anticipation of a lightening up of the storyline once Joe was largely written out of the show, but after an episode or two, they had second thoughts and returned to the better-known third season theme.

Interesting theories!! Will we ever learn the whole story?? They should really do a Rhoda True Hollywood Story!!

This may sound a bit bizzarre, but I thought I'd share this...

In January, 2002, I was at a hotel in Times Square. It was late on a snowy Sunday night, and I was dying for hot chocolate - the only place which was open was Howard Johnson's. As I was sitting at the counter, my ears perked up when I heard the 'la la la' version play over the speakers.

It wasn't the TV version, as a matter of fact for some reason this sounded almost like Asian kids ~ but it was definitely the same tune, and the same 'la la la la'. In between the vocals was instrumentals, so it made up for about a three-four minute song.

I asked the waiter if it was a CD or cassette tape they had playing (it was definitley NOT a radio station), and what the name of the CD was (because lo and behold I had to get it!).

Unfortunately, the waiter did not speak English well, and had no idea what I was talking about. The more I kept pointing to the speaker above me, and saying 'What CD?' the more he kept smiling and nodding yes. (There was no one else working with him out front, either).

Needless to say, this has driven me crazy for seven years now! The HoJos is long gone - I'd like to know what ever happened to that CD!

Here's what you should do: Check the closing credits for Rhoda to see who wrote the theme, and do a search on that person.

I did a google search for Billy Goldenberg, Rhoda Theme, and came up with :

Let's Have an Old-time Thanksgiving by W. & M. Edward H. Morris which includes the theme from Rhoda which was recorded Nov. 23, 1987 (a decade after Rhoda was cancelled). Doesn't say anything about a dvd or commercial recording, but maybe this is what was heard in the restaurant.

According to imdb:

Series Original Music by
Billy Goldenberg (49 episodes, 1974-1976)
Richard Lewis Warren (48 episodes, 1976-1978)
Les Hooper (13 episodes, 1978)

WOW you guys - you are great! "Let's Have an Old Fashioned Thanksgiving" sounds interesting - if it was done in 1987, there's a good chance it is available on CD since that was how much of the music was recorded back then. I'll check it out and let you know what I find - if anyone else finds anything else, keep me posted.

A big heartful thanks to all of you for the information! You guys are the best!

Should I make my own general discussion thread about all the Rhoda theme song or is this turning into such a thread?
