View Full Version : Deaths during high school
browneyes106 08-12-2009, 05:15 PM This morning at work one of my coworkers and I ended up taking about deaths that happened while we in high school. He went to a big high school and during his four years of high school there were 13 people that died. Most of them were car accident deaths.
I went to a small high school and during my freshman year two people died in my school. One of them was my close friend who died due to an allergic reaction to pain meds he was given for a knee surgery. The other was a girl who had brain cancer off an on for years. I didn't know her she was two grades ahead of me.

Wow, all those people died!! Hard to believe.
We just had one kid that I knew of that died during his junior year. I don't know exactly of what, he had health problems. I didn't know him very well, but he was good friends with the son of our priest, and our priest mentioned it in the service. Even though I didn't really know him, it still hits you hard.
Marvo301 08-12-2009, 05:53 PM When I was in grade 9 there were two grade 11 girls from my school who died in a car accident.
InspectorExstead 08-12-2009, 06:52 PM In 8th grade, I had peer counseling and all of us in that class became really close. One of the girls, who was in 7th grade at the time, would always miss class, and always looked so thin and pale. She had leukemia. She was going to tell us after winter break, but she was too sick to come to school after that so our teacher told us. Our school held a blood drive to find a bone marrow match for her. Unfortunately, no match was ever found. She died about a year later, when I was in high school. She was such a sweet kid-always made me laugh. We did a secret santa gift exchange and she bought me candles and bracelets that were purple because she knew I loved that color.
In high school, there were a couple of people who died of a drug overdose or car accident, but I didn't know them.
One of the more popular deaths at my school was turned into a movie with Justin Timberlake-Alpha Dog. Nick Markowitz was killed by a drug dealer, Jesse James Hollywood. The two didn't know each other though. Jesse was out for revenge because Nick's half brother owed him money for drugs. He spotted Nick and decided to kidnap and kill him instead. This happened one year before I started attending my high school. But I knew so many teachers who had Nick and they would always talk about him. Every year, there was a page in the yearbook dedicated to him. It was such an unfortunate and sad story.
PZelda 08-12-2009, 07:21 PM Let me see... I went to a small high school (only 700 people in grades 9-12). Nobody died when I was a freshman... When I was a sophomore, a senior died right before graduation (this was in the spring of 2001). I didn't know him, but knew his story. He'd been born with some kind of heart defect and had to have surgeries quite often when he was growing up. He had to have surgeries starting in February of that year, and was hoping to be back to school in time for his graduation. Unfortunately, that didn't happen because he died of complications from a surgery. :(
The summer before I started junior year in high school, a girl in my class died in an one-car accident -- was speeding on a gravel road, lost control of her car, went into a ditch, causing her car to roll over and it ejected her from her car because she wasn't wearing a seat belt. A month later, a guy a grade ahead of me (he was going to be a senior in the fall) died in a drunk driving accident... and guess what, he was the drunk driver.
Then when I was a senior in the fall of 2002, a guy who was a sophomore died of complications from a car accident. He'd made it out of the car accident alive, but slipped into a coma after he was airlifted to a hospital in another town. He was in that coma for over a week before he finally died.
Sooo let me see, that's four kids from my school who died during the course of my high school years. There were a lot more than that, though... mainly kids who were in middle school.
Number 9 Dream 08-12-2009, 07:24 PM I don't know if this counts since these people died AFTER I graduated high school (2000), but we attended the same school so here goes:
- This kid Brian died of a drug overdose around 2001 or 2002. He was partying with a few people he knew, shooting heroin or something of that sort. He and his girlfriend (who wasn't doing drugs but was probably drunk) passed out on the bed. His girlfriend woke up to see Brian had died of an overdose in their sleep.
- This girl Kelly who was in one of my classes died in a car accident in 2001, a year after we graduated high school. She was driving a Jeep and hit a truck head-on. Both were killed :( Weird, but this girl also worked at the place I'm currently working at, and my co-worker, Diane, said she warned her to be careful with this new Jeep. Apparently, Diane had a premonition that something awful would happen to her in it...and she was correct :(
- A classmate named Alvin fell out of his window at NYU after a night of drinking.
- There was another girl named Sabrina, who was quite a few years younger than me so I didn't know her too well, that died from meningitis. Really sad :(
Those are the ones I can think of. I'm sure there are a few more, but these stick out the most in my mind.
One of our teachers died during my junior year. He was a counselor, and helped out several students that were facing addiction problems. I never had a class with him, but his office was right across the hall from my locker. To this day I remember how he'd smile at me and offer a cheerful "Good morning" every single day without fail. I don't think he ever knew my name, but it didn't matter - I was a student at his school - that was enough for him. One weekend he had a heart attack while working out at a local gym. I can't tell you how much I miss those "Good mornings" and that friendly smile.
There was also a girl who had just graduated that died, along with her mother in a boating accident only a month before she was supposed to start college. I was in the same class as her younger sister. Her sister was one of the strongest people I knew. The stupid teachers kept calling her by her sister's name - and she'd just sit quietly and say "I'm Katie, not Kristy." She was our homecoming queen.
---
However, the one that got to me the most was a girl who was in my sociology class. She was a year younger than me, but we were in the same study group (there were only four of us in each group). Michelle Moorehead. God help her, she was only fourteen years old. Wow, this is hard... let me tell you what I remember:
Michelle was a freshman. She was bright, bubbly, and had a ton of energy. She was so happy to be in highschool and was always positive. I remember the silly things about her, like how she was too young to put on makeup properly and still had lines around her neck. She was always so happy, just to be out of middle school.
At the time, I was having a lot of problems with my parents. My best friend had taken me out to breakfast the Friday before Easter to talk things over. I remember seeing Michelle, her older sister and their parents at the next table. We smiled and waived to each other, but she was with her family and I was with my friend, so we didn't get a chance to say anything. On Easter Sunday Michelle and both of her parents were killed in a car accident. My friend Jamie and I were the last people in our hometown to see them alive.
Michelle and I weren't best friends, but we knew each other and liked each other. Her death affected me more than I ever thought possible. Every significant event in my life I've remembered her, and thought about how she didn't get to enjoy it: a sweet sixteen, prom, graduation, college, and now reunions. It's so d*mned unfair that a girl as sweet and positive as Michelle never got a chance to experience those things. I think of her so often, and I miss her more than words can say. I don't understand why God took someone so sweet and full of life and leave the rest of us to just carry on.
+ God Bless you, Michelle, I'll miss you until the day I die.
Schmoopie 08-12-2009, 10:20 PM It's sad but every year that I was in high school (10-12th grades) there was at least one death.
The ones that I remember well are:
10th grade-a girl that was a senior killed herself, but I didn't know her.
10th grade-the one that shocked me was finding out that a girl whom I had known since the 5th grade (she was in my 5th grade class) was killed in a car accident. Apparantly she was riding home with her boyfriend who was drunk and he crashed into a telephone poll, sending her through the windshield. Sorry to be so graphic there. That was really sad because she was just beautiful. I didn't really talk to her and I got the feeling she didn't like me much, but it freaked me out that it was someone that I knew.
The worst of all was when I was a junior. I'll never forget coming into 1st period biology. My teacher was absolutely white as ghost. She said that one of the teachers committed suicide over the weekend. I was absolutely FLOORED when it turned out to be my 10th grade English teacher. I had just talked to her the week before and she asked how my mom was doing. Her class was REALLY hard and she spent two days explaining a five paragraph theme assingment. She was very adamant in saying that she was only going to explain it ONCE. I took a ton of notes and near the end of class on the second day, she gave us free time to start our papers. I went completely blank and had no idea what to do! I was so afraid to ask her to explain it again, but I did, and I was touched when she let me stay after class (it was 6th period, the last class of the day) and explained it to me again.
There were three deaths my senior year but the two I mentioned above were the only ones during high school that really affected me.
Andrea
PS: My condolences to those of you who lost people you cared about in high school.:bighug:

Oh my gosh, that is terrible! I am so sorry! :bighug: If you don't mind my asking, how long ago did this happen? I graduated in 1986, so the ones I mentioned happened in 1984-1986.
On a happy note (well kind of)... the Valedictorian at my high school had cancer our senior year and ended up missing a ton of school and yet he was still the Valedictorian. I didn't know him, but I'd heard about him. My mom taught school and she knew his mom from her work. I saw him at my 10 year reunion in 1996 and my husband (actually my fiance back then!) made me go talk to the guy. Turns out the guy has all these degrees from MIT and these other schools. I think that is really cool that he not only survived, but that he is so successful!

dawsongirl 08-12-2009, 10:29 PM We had a couple classmates die in car accidents (one roll-over, one head on). Once when I was in...JH maybe, we heard during school that a girl at the high school had, idk, hung or shot herself, and was barely hanging on. She didn't make it. Her younger brother was in my class.

Michelle died in 1997. She would have been twenty-six this year. Thank you for asking.
Darren J. 08-12-2009, 11:21 PM Freshman year, a girl skipped school and got killed in a car accident. The driver(a senior) survived. Sophomore year, a kid died in a car accident in January when the roads were slick from snow. Junior year, a kid shot himself with his father's gun. We don't think it was a suicide though. It was a classic gun and we think he was just playing with it and it accidently went off. No one died senior year.
Chocoholic 08-12-2009, 11:22 PM One boy I knew from a couple of classes died of cancer during our senior year. I wasn't really friends with him, but I was devastated when I heard he died.
Another classmate of mine and his younger brother were murdered back in 2002 and they finally convicted someone in their deaths just a few weeks ago.
A little girl at the school I work at died of a brain aneurism back around 2000.
I know of a few other kids who died, either from illnesses, accidents, or suicide. It's always a tragedy to lose someone so young :(
MickeyMac 08-13-2009, 01:55 PM During my freshmen year there was this kid who was a senior who drowned. The next day at school as you can imagine everyone was upset, and there were people crying. It was a Friday to, so a sad way to start the weekend.
sunshinefizzy 08-13-2009, 04:42 PM There was a ten year old that went to a different elementary school than I did that died. I couldn't even tell you how that happened.
There was a guy in my class that shot and killed himself in 7th grade. That was horrible everybody was shook up over it.
There was a guy in my class in 10th grade that got hit by a drunk driver. His girlfriend would have been the one to take the blow but he pushed her out of the way and took it for her.:(
Then there was a girl who I did know quite a bit. She died in a car accident. The thing with that is my second cousin on my mom's side was best friend's with this girl and she would have been in the car with her had her dad told her no because she was grounded.
Goes to show you how fragile your's or anybody else's mortality is.
Hollow 08-14-2009, 03:22 AM yaaa. 2 seniors died in a drunk driving ATV accident when i was a freshman. didn't know em. one of my friends died in a car crash when i was a soph. i only knew her a whole semester but i still cry when i look at her myspace page or talk about her. another friend of mine got drunk and shot himself @ the end of my junior year. we werent close but i was sad cuz he was funny. then two recent alumni i didn't know died after that. one died of leukemia that summer and the other died in an incredibly gruesome car crash in my senior year. the end. i hate myspace.
ps. since were also talking about b4 hs, my best friend in the 3rd grade got hit by a car and died. i spent every waking minute fantasizing about suicide and getting buried. too bad i threw out the fake funeral programs i made for myself, those would have been GOLD nowadays.
The only one that I remember was a guy named "Tom" (not his real name) who died in a motorcycle accident. Tom and another guy named "Rick" were racing their motorcycles on a dead-end street in the late evening. As they approached the finish line at the end of the street, Rick safely came to a stop. But Tom lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into the barrier at the end of the street. He died instantly, that's what everyone said.
This sounds terrible, but Tom had very few mourners at my high school. Just a small circle of friends, and that was all. He was pretty much a bully, in an oddly good-natured way, and hardly anybody missed him.

I'm so sorry, Sarah, that's so awful. My sister lost her best friend in fourth grade to a brain tumor. I know she still thinks about him - it's so tragic to lose someone that young.
By the way, if you don't mind my asking, what do you mean by the funeral programs being gold?
