View Full Version : Anybody's Facebook Not Working?
Wreckless 08-10-2009, 04:51 PM For the past 3 days at least, mine has been acting up. When I log in, it goes directly to my home page like it does every single time. But we're the status updates of friends of mine are on the page, their's a bunch of writing. Not to mention I can't update my status. I can add friends and look people up and add them in the search engine in the top right corner of the screen, but when I go to update my status, it types it, but instead of being in black writing like the status updates normally are, it's in gray and when I click "Update" to update the status, it doesn't do it and nothing happens.
Today when I logged in, all the writing was off and my regular facebook home page screen was back to normal and came up, but the same problems with the status update occurred, and I couldn't post new status updates whatsoever. Anybody else have this problem, or know what the problem might be? I logged in and out of Facebook, tried restarting my computer. Sometimes it seems to be a problem with the speed of my computer. my laptop runs fast but at times any computer can become slow, for a split second at least. I am running AVG 8.5.392 on my computer currently and I run tests through this program regularly everyday, to check for viruses and spyware. so it's not like I'm unprotected either. I don't think viruses are on my computer, and none have come up on the AVG scanning screen, when it was done scanning for them, but I can not put my finger on what the problem overall seems to be. Help please?? Thanks.
PZelda 08-10-2009, 06:39 PM Facebook got hit with a DDOS (Distribute denial-of-service) attack -- it is the same attack that got Twitter and Livejournal a few days ago. Facebook and LJ are fine for the most part, but there are still people who are having trouble with both sites.
I'm sure you're more than just fine - no viruses. Facebook is just being really iffy for you. :(
catlover79 08-10-2009, 06:46 PM Mine was acting up a couple of days ago, but seems to be OK now.
Scoobiedoo30 08-10-2009, 06:49 PM What do you mean by Distribute denial of Service

From Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack):
A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely. Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways, and even root nameservers.
Here's a story about how Twitter, Facebook, Livejournal and Google were battling the DDOS attack over the weekend - http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/169893/ddos_attackers_continue_hitting_twitter_facebook_google.html
Apparently the attacks were targeted at one person who uses all the affected sites. http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-10305200-245.html
Wreckless 08-10-2009, 08:42 PM ^ Yeah I remember that story, about Twitter & Facebook being hacked. That might be the problem. Thanks PZelda :). Hopefully that is the (short term) problem, and it's gone soon enough.

That's the thing that sucks about it all... Ever since Facebook updated their layout in March (I STILL hate it, btw), everybody has had problems out the ass with the site. It never used to be like that before. So it does not surprise me. I have problems with FB from time to time... Discovered a few months ago that I can't surf FB in Firefox on BOTH the Windows desktop and my Macbook. My Macbook is new, too - four months old. Blah. So now I have to check FB on Internet Explorer when I'm on Windows, or in Safari when I'm on my Macbook. They're doing a really good job of pissing everybody off. Soooo if you haven't tried FB in a different browser, try that and see if it works any better for you. When I would surf FB in Firefox, the text on the page would disappear too, and just show "Older Posts." I'd click that and still nothing came up so that sounds like the same problem I had.
browneyes106 08-10-2009, 10:19 PM I just logged onto FB about twenty minutes ago and I haven't had any problems.
Chocoholic 08-10-2009, 11:52 PM Mine seems OK now.
comedyfreak 08-11-2009, 05:56 AM Mine has been okay.
MickeyMac 08-11-2009, 05:35 PM I was having trouble posting earlier, but its working fine now.
MrCleveland 08-11-2009, 07:10 PM Mine's working fine.
But...have you ever typed a name that sounds very familiar, wrote a letter to him, and he/she never replied to you...or you had a friend and like Houdini they're gone because he/she disliked you because you did something dumb?
Wreckless 08-12-2009, 07:57 PM Mines working now. Had to completely reconfigure my computer though, but that's another matter.
MrCleveland 08-12-2009, 07:59 PM Even though Facebook is working for me...I had problems with SO earlier.

Would someone just shoot people like this? If they have absolutely nothing better to do that make viruses or attack websites, then they don't need to live.
