I tried doing a search for discussions about Sesame Street and I was amazed that I couldn't find any! Call me crazy, but ever since I went to Youtube looking for this much-criticized stint that Pres. Obama did on Sesame Street  , (which, incidentally, he was never on an actual episode, as Michelle was. I think he did a segment in honor of their 40th anniversary that probably aired during a 40th anniversary show, which is why he says "brought to you by the number 40") I found a GOLDMINE of clips (both old and new) and the best part was the amount of clips I found that featured celebrities. I posted one on the music board that has to be the most adorable segment ever!

Even though I am in my 40's I still like watching Sesame Street on occasion! It's amazing that this show has endured for over 40 years and it's still as popular as ever. I watched one today and I have to admit that the "Elmo's World" segment, although cute, was WAY too long. I think it ran almost ten minutes. No big deal for us "grownups" but even I was getting bored with it. I could see doing several segments with stuff in-between but this was one continuous thing. Nothing againt Elmo, because I find him adorable, but I doubt that a preschooler is going to sit still long enough to watch that whole thing.

I was an avid Sesame Street watcher until I was in the seventh grade. I mean, I absolutely HAD to watch this show, every day at 5pm! I remember once I had a birthday party at my house and all my friends from school were coming over. I was so embarrassed when they came over because Sesame Street was on the televison! Fortunately I don't think any of them noticed. My little brother was just a baby then, so I couldn't say that he was watching it !!!

There used to be an amusement park in Arlington, Texas called Sesame Place and my mom took my brother and I there. I think I had a better time than he did! Unfortunately we only went once because it closed down but there are still locations in Pennsylvania. I don't think I'd want to travel all the way there to go to that park again, but it was a blast!

Anyway, Sesame Street is where I learned most of the Spanish that I know. Of course that means that I can't carry on a conversation in Spanish unless they want to know what words like "open", "closed" and "danger" mean! Still it's kind of cool that they would show the English version of a segment, followed by the Spanish version. I haven't seem them show the Spanish versions on the newer episodes, but then again, I only watch parts of it.

Netflix has this DVD set you can rent called "Sesame Street Old School" with the really old clips from the shows of the 60's and 70's. I can hardly wait to rent these and have a real "flashback"!

Feel free to add any memories of Sesame Street onto this appreciation thread!

Andrea

PS: I should probably add (although most of you already know) that I don't have any kids, so my watching Sesame Street is just another of my regressions into my childhood!

You know what? I checked that book out from the library, but it was really long and at the time I wasn't really "into" it. I had just finished reading Carol Spinney's book about his being Big Bird. I can't remember the name of it, but it was really good. I did look at some of the pictures, though. Actually I'd rather watch a TV show about the history of Sesame Street, with the old clips and so forth.

Does he talk about being Oscar also?

I was actually going to start a thread for Sesame Street, but you beat me to it, Andrea :D I was on YouTube the other night watching old clips featuring Bert and Ernie. Those two are my favorites  I also love Cookie Monster, the Two-Headed Monster, Grover (especially Grover the Waiter), Oscar, and Big Bird. So many good memories. Remember Teeny Little Super Guy, Guy Smiley, Count von Count, Forgetful Jones, the Amazing Munford and Don Music? Oh yeah, I just remember the Martians and the Honkers. So many good memories  Sesame Street just isn't the same ever since Elmo took over.

I am one of the many who grew up with Sesame Street. In fact, the very first movie I ever saw in the theater was Follow That Bird (1985). My grandma took me to see it. Great show!! :D

Before 1994, I was also one of those who grew up with "Sesame Street." I remember having a lot of the books and videos, including "The Alphabet Game," which was a half-hour special focusing on Big Bird going on a game show. Sweeettt!!! The game show was "Alphabet Treasure Hunt," and it seemed that host Sonny Friendly (this was one of the few game shows that was not hosted by Guy Smiley, BTW) was clearly favoring the other two contestants (Gary Grouch & Dimples the Dog) over Big Bird in that one.

I still have a lot of my Sesame Street/Muppets story books. I keep them around for whenever my nephews come over and I can read the books for them. Who could forget classics like "There's a Monster at the End of This Book"? :D

There's another book called Sesame Street Unpaved by David Borgenicht. It has a lot more pictures and may be more reader friendly.

OMG, I LOVE that book! I think that was my all-time favorite. It was kind of scary in a cute way! Maybe that's why Grover was always my favorite!

Yeah, actually Carol Spinnney does talk about being Oscar. It's a great book and I really recommend it!

Ha ha! That's cute!

Oh, speaking of Jim Hensen/Mupppets, the Experience Music Project museum in Seattle has been showcasing a Jim Hensen Muppet exhibit. Of course it ends on Sunday and now I want to go to it, so I'm hoping we can make it! If I go I'll tell you guys all about it! It's been there since May and of course I wait till the last minute, but that's pretty much always true with me!!

I love the original sesame street (1969-1991 or so) -- In 1993 the show went to crap.... Now its a piece of garbage like most everything else on TV!!

I collect VHS tapes of different media from Sesame street.. Right now I have 9 different tapes (Most from 1986 (2 from 1988 (2 from 1990)))

Its very important for me to find ORIGINAL ANALOG RECORDINGS OF THIS SHOW as I want the nicest experience possible (This is how I remember the show so I want it the same way)

Its sad that they destroyed this show.... I recently found out the creator died in 1990 which is probably they did this in 93 :(

I was a huge Sesame Street fan when I was a kid! I watched the show a lot. I remember having some Sesame Street records ("Grover Sings The Blues" was my favorite) and some shirts. Anyone else remember this?

I didn't get into James Taylor until I was in my 20's and when I first started listening to "Your Smiling Face" I remember thinking, "Hey, where's the flute?"

YAY! I LOVE Sesame Street! (And the Muppets and most all of Jim Henson's work in general.):)
Sesame Street has gone through a number of changes but it's still great- and still running after 45 years! If you want to keep up on it, I suggest checking out the excellent Muppet Wiki.:)

and of course- the best Muppet fan site online- www.muppetcentral.com

Oh yeah- I absolutely LOVE that James Taylor appearance with Oscar- one of my favorite Taylor songs- "Your Smiling Face"- of course, he modified the lyrics just a little for Oscar's sake- lol.:)
(I love a number of James Taylor songs, by the way- great classic singer and songwriter.)

Does anyone remember when the show used to feature comedy skits, especially in the early years, such as Buddy and Jim and Larry and Phyllis?

MacLeaper

That was mainly in the 1970s and yes, I am familiar with them- some of the Buddy and Jim sketches are included on the Sesame Street Old School DVD releases.:)
Those are great sketches, along with the Larry and Phyllis and Wally and Ralph skits.
The main human cast did a number of such sketches too that are really funny and memorable- David and Maria and Bob doing a deserted island bit particularly stands out to me- Maria doing Charlie Chaplin- the human cast doing songs like "What's The Name of That Song?" (the Muppets were in there too though), etc.
And I also love the Mad Painter sketches! And the classic Baker songs.:)

Some of my friends work on the show here in Queens. I am a little jealous of them. LOL.

My favorite human character is Susan played by Loretta Long. She and Bob McGrath have been with the show since day one from 1969. I love it.

Follow That Bird was my first movie theater film too. It was released just before my third birthday. My only complaint is my most favorite adult character was not included.

God bless you always!!!
