I only learned that there was a New Dick Van Dyke Show a couple of days ago, and I was really surprised. I don't know how there could've been, I just couldn't watch it because it wouldn't be the same seeing Dick Van Dyke acting with other people than MTM and the rest of the cast that were supposed to be his family and friends. To me there was only one Dick Van Dyke Show, and that was the best.

I know how you feel, Marta. In my opinion DVD's chemistry with MTM is way better than the chemistry he had or should have had with Hope Lange.

It must be very hard when you have been the lead in a classic sitcom to follow up with another successful sitcom. Very few have done it -- Lucille Ball and Bob Newhart are the ones who come to mind. Lucy's later shows are mediocre at best. Newhart's second show is quite good, but his first is generally considered better.

Dick Van Dyke actually did fairly well with his second show. It's no classic, but it's pretty decent, and had a respectable run (three seasons). Compare this to "The New Andy Griffith Show", which came out about six months earlier than NDVD, and was gone after thirteen shows.

The Plot:

Dick Preston (Van Dyke) was an Arizona talk show host. His wife was Jenny(Hope Lange). He secretary was also his sister named Michelle whom everyone just called Mike(Fannie Flagg).Marty Brill played his friend Bernie and Nancy Dussault played another close friend.David Doyle of Charlie's Angels fame made recurring guest spots as the president of the channel Dick's show was on.He worked at Channel 2 who was constantly competing with Channel 6.
It was a great show until they moved Dick and Jenny to Hollywood so Dick can be on a soap opera called "Those Who Care"
I watch the reruns on "Goodlife TV".
