View Full Version : Worst Experiences on the Internet

Everyone will likely have both good and bad experiences on the Internet. I've mostly had good experiences but there are a few incidents that occurred online that I found very upsetting.

*Being picked on because of my religious/spiritual beliefs - this tended to happen sometimes on another forum that I post at.

* Being made fun of for my taste in music.

* Having friends insulted by people who don't know them, have never met them and know hardly anything about them.

* Most recently, being accused of lying about the death of a friend.

Nothing worth mentioning. Any problems I've had on the internet, I've helped contribute to.

I had a guy on another message board call me "trailer trash" because of what I did for a living. Then he started making fun of my occupation. Well, he just happened to use his real name as his username, and also mentioned where he lived. Big mistake.;)

I have had some unpleasant experiences online. Mostly differences of opinions that got out of hand. All the more reasons why I am an agree to disagree kind of person.

OK, first of all, I would like to point out that I am not a hateful person. When something like that is said about me though, especially since I am NOT trailer trash, then them's fighting' words!!

I haven't really done anything of a violent nature, like firebomb his house or slash his tires. I would never do that. Let's just say I still keep in touch with him once in a while via a "nice" letter or card, basically reminding him of what a s:censored:head or :censored:hole he is.

Aren't I sweet? And so lady-like!:D

Oh, I see. Does he ever respond?

I can understand your feelings, but you may want to be careful about keeping it up - he could file complaints against you for harassment or something like that. I'm not saying that you are harassing him, just that he could do that - it might cause you to get into some trouble.

I thought of that, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't know who I am(I sign it using my username from that board). Since I go all over the country, I can mail them from anywhere, so he can't figure out what state I live in. It's not like I do it all the time, even early on, I wasn't doing it all the time. I would think that if he knew who I was, I would've heard back from him. Actually, I really can't remember the last time he heard from me.

Well, I guess he probably won't be able to track you down.

As I said, I do understand your feelings on the matter, although if I had to be honest, I would say that I don't really agree with doing it continuously - once or twice, maybe, but not more than that. It's not something I would do myself. However, I also understand that his comment really angered and offended you, so I'm not trying to judge you or criticise you.

May I ask if you know how old this person is? If he was, say, under 20, then I might suggest leaving it be. I'm not saying that young people should be excused for rudeness, but some young people are just silly and immature and many grow out of it (although some just stay that way all their lives.) If, say, it had been a 13 or 14-year-old making that comment, then I would have advised you to put it down to immaturity and ignore it. A proper adult, though, should definitely know better.

I hear ya, and I totally respect your opinion. This guy is in his 40's now, and it happened a few years ago. Yes, it is immature, and I really should just let it go. I think the thing is that when I read what he said I was really, really hurt. I mean where does he get off saying stuff like that about me? He doesn't even know me! Also, I have NEVER ever looked down or made fun of somebody because of what they did for a living. At least the person is employed.

Oh well, before all this with him went on, he had gotten into it about a couple other topics with other people. That should've been a red flag. The thing is I didn't even start anything with him, he started it!!

Like you said, a proper adult should definitely know better. Again, I should just let it go.

I just wanted to make it clear that when I mentioned the immaturity aspect that I was referring to the man who insulted you, not you yourself. Since he was a full adult and not a teenager, then he definitely should have known better than to insult somebody because of their job and should be more polite and respectful too. I completely understand why you were so angry and hurt - there are things that people have said to me online, that, when I think about them nowadays, I still feel angry over. The worst for me was a moderator on another forum publically accusing me on the forum of lying about the death of a friend, which wasn't the case and was something I would never do. He privately bullied me through emails a little as well. A few weeks ago I reported one of his posts to the forum's administrator - although the administrator hasn't always been on my side in the past, he did fortunately agree with me about the comment I reported. I know he got in touch with the moderator regarding it - I don't know what was said, but I have noted that the moderator hasn't posted for nearly three weeks now. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

There have experiences on message boards where I have asked for advice or to vent and people bully me right away and accuse me of lying about things. I have never had any bad experiences here on SO. This is the best forum I have ever joined. This isn't a really a bad experience but back in May for Memorial Day I started a Memorial Day tribute thread on another forum and only one person responded. I was bit sad that more people didn't respond or pay tribute to the fallen.

Oh, I know, but deep down, I know I'm being just as immature for keeping it going, even if it did hurt me as much as it did.

Wow, I am so sorry to hear about that!! At least this guy didn't privately bully me!! There have been quite a few forums I don't go on anymore because of the atmosphere on there, including a few of my favorite bands. This is one of the few boards I still go on, I have absolutely no problems with anybody on here, and I don't expect to in the future. I like everybody on here, even if I'm not as close to alot of you as you are to each other.:D

Wow, I am so sorry to hear about that!!

Thanks. :) The friend I am speaking of died very unexpectedly (in a car accident) and he was only 47 (I knew him from university, he was a mature student, and one of the most intelligent people I have ever known, as well as being a very nice person.) His death was tragic and everyone who knew him was very shocked and upset, and it's still hard for me to believe even now (it happened in April.)

The fact that he had died was bad enough and then coupled with that I had the moderator on the forum publically accusing me of lying about it and saying I was making it all up in order to emotionally blackmail people. I emailed him websites and online news articles relating details of the accident and also emailed him the links to video footage of a memorial event that one of the university's societies held for Justin (the name of the friend). Each time he replied saying that he wasn't convinced and in a few emails he made some insulting remarks about my boyfriend (who he doesn't know and knows very little about) and a rather insulting comment about Justin.

A friend of mine who also posts on that forum, and who I had been confiding in, spoke to the moderator about it. He passed along what the moderator had said to him, which was basically that the moderator now believes that I was telling the truth but doesn't want to go through having to apologise, so he's still pretending that he doesn't believe me! Apparently part of his reason is that he wants me to understand that people won't always believe me and that not everything will go the way I want it.

I don't think that's ANY excuse for the way he behaved, though. Who is he to try to teach me that kind of lesson? I am already quite well aware that, even though I may be being truthful, people may not always believe me, and I'm also quite well aware that things won't always go the way I want them to. After having realised that I was telling the truth, the moderator should have been man enough to apologise - using the death of a friend like that and pretending that he doesn't believe me is very cruel. As I said, his death was upsetting enough, and the fact that I was then continuously accused of lying about it - it was horrible.

I know OU812 was a real troublemaker. Bobby F. could be too but I didn't think he was as bad as OU812 and I didn't think they were the same person!

WHen i moved to NYC in the mid 90's, I was really into toy and action figure collecting. I read all the magazines and trade publications and knew all the places to shop for stuff.
The website of a collector's magazine I read had a message board - I thought it would be a good experience to reach out to other NYC collectors to find out what they shopped for, what shops they frequented, and thier opinions on the toys, etc. It seemed like a pretty good site, so I signed up, picked a uersname and started posting.
What a mistake that was.
The boards were controlled by a clique of some of the most obnoxious people I have ever encountered on the web. When they weren't fighting among themselves (you though there was some bickering on these message boards - fuggetaboutit!) they would gang up on anyone they didn't agree with, especially new people.
I lasted maybe a month there. What a bunch of jerks.

1-Getting dumped by someone on Facebook (When someone takes you off your friends list on purpose).

2-Having forum arguments because your opinions are extremely different.

3-YouTube telling me to remove a video because of infringements.

4-Going to a webpage and find out that it's porn!

^ What Sarah posted earlier. For no good reason at all, that guy stalked me hardcore for several months in 2004. It got so bad I seriously considered leaving the boards permanently. But then I realized that if I did, that would mean he succeeded in running someone off the boards. So... I'm still here, five years later. :D

Then I had another d00d who was way too interested in me. Just creepy. Thankfully myspace finally added a feature to go private around that time (it was probably mid-2006 when they implmented that feature).

These days, I've realized that I just don't have the time for stupid **** like that. I'm not wasting my time on the internet fighting with people or letting myself be bothered by insignificant things in life. I have more important things to do, like go to work and then move.

I see your point. But sometimes someone will say something to me that is really unkind and uncalled for and I just can't let it go without saying anything or complaining.

Also, I never defended myself whenever I was picked on as a child, which I think has made me more determined to stick up for myself if anyone has a go at me online.

Yeah, 2004 was just an all-around bad year for SO, I think. 2003 was intense, too. At one point CC was in such bad shape that TJ considered shutting it down permanently (at the time, it was just him and Pavan as admins - Seth and Janice were both just regular posters). Then TJ decided to bring Janice in as a CC mod and she's had that position ever since (September 2003, I believe it was). Theeeeen it was around 2005 or 2006 that TJ made Seth an admin. But you were already here, so...

2004 had a TON of fights that I won't and shouldn't mention here. You know where to look, though, and you can't reply to them now anyway. I'm not sure what got into peoples' underwear during that time... everybody just had a lot of bad feelings towards each other that year.

I'm not interested in stirring up anything now, so nothing has happened and I'm just fine with that :)

Yeah, I remember there were a couple of really bad fights raging on around the time that I joined. I think one of them must have been deleted, though. You probably remember it - the thread about the PIB forums? It was really long and emotions were running very high. I don't remember a great deal about it but I do remember it being a very ugly thread. I tried to search for it a little while back because I wanted to refresh my memory about what exactly it had been about, but I can't find it - so I think it may have been deleted, although I'm not sure why? It was a pretty bad fight, but there were others that I would say were just as bad, and they can still be found.

Very good cereal to be eating. Has a huge connection to the sports world, so the front of the box changes constantly. But two things stay the same - the box is always red-orange and the logo is always white. :)

^ Looks quite nice. :)

As for my other worst experiences, being accused of lying about a friend dying was definitely the worst. There have been others that have upset me a lot at the time.

I've always hated being made fun of for my religious/spiritual beliefs or my musical tastes. I think it's fine for people to disagree and/or not believe in my spiritual beliefs, but they shouldn't make fun of me for having them - the moderator I was talking about has made fun of me on both those counts a few times. It's a guaranteed way to REALLY upset and anger me.

Plus there were occasions when this person and a couple of other people would voice negative views and comments about friends of mine, which I really disliked as they really didn't know what they were talking about. They had never met them and knew hardly anything about them, so I don't see why they had to shoot their mouths off. I don't like seeing friends insulted.

Well the worst for me is after I've posted something and then I get a PM from someone absolutely tearing me apart. The ones who send me these PM's always say that they need to tell me something that they didn't think was "appropriate" in the actual forum. This has happened to me three times and each one has reduced me to tears. I mean, I'm sensitive to begin with, so it doesn't take much.

I probably shouldn't be mentioning this but the last time wasn't that long ago and if you are wondering why I didn't post here from November until May... it's because one of those hurtful PM's came from someone at SO. I still don't understand why people who chose to do this think that sending the person a hurtful PM makes it better than reading it on the actual thread. I think it's just because the person is too embarrassed to have others read it doesn't make it right to send the hurtful note directly to the person.

Once someone sent me an e-mail after getting ticked off about something I posted about a TV show episode. I had no idea how she got my personal e-mail address to begin with. We had already argued the point on the thread but she felt obliged to continue the conversation in a much harsher tone. I had met the actor/actress who were on this particular show and she started tearing into me about how much of a loser I am, saying I was just jealous because he didn't pay enough attention to me, blah blah blah.

I stopped posting on that particular board and another member noticed I was gone and emailed me. She read the thread where we were arguing and apparently this person chose to tear into me on that thread as well. Of course no way was I going to read it, but this other person did see it. So she asked if she could call me and when I did, she told me that the person who had e-mailed me was someone that I had met the year before, and was using a fake screen name so that I wouldn't know it was the same person. Just terrible, really.

I haven't experienced anything major on the Internet like identity theft or stalking. I have had problems on other forums with immature people making fun of me and criticizing me for my religious and political beliefs or my taste in music or TV or whatever. When I was younger, it really bothered me, especially since I was always bullied in school. Now, I don't really let it bother me all that much. Most on-line bullies are just sad, pathetic lowlifes who would never dare say what they said online to the person's face.

Only problem I ever had here was a poster who had the nerve to bash me for complaining about my grandmother. This poster had no idea what my grandmother was like and had no right to criticize me. They don't post here anymore anyway.

Wow, people have had some bad/annoying experiences with the Internet. I'm so glad I found this place, because I have never had a problem here at all. Everyone is so tolerant of others and accepting, it's wonderful. I've never had any bad experiences with the Internet, except of course that at times I get distracted by it and can't focus on my work, but that's to be expected.

Something I can't stand is online-hypocrisy. There's a certain website(boingboing) I visit where comments are routinely "disemvoweled" in the name of peace and harmony. This site prides itself on fighting big media, promoting openness, and rallying against censorship. Then it turns out one of the admins went back and deleted all the comments of one poster/contributer AND all of the thread she posted in. It was childish and petty thing to do.

Only problem I ever had here was a poster who had the nerve to bash me for complaining about my grandmother. This poster had no idea what my grandmother was like and had no right to criticize me. They don't post here anymore anyway.

I've seen that thread. You described how your grandmother was pretty much an unpleasant person who made people around her miserable. I felt sorry that you had to deal with her and thought it was wrong of the other person to criticise you - as you said, she didn't really know what your grandmother was like, and had she known, she might have felt the same way as you.

The poster was Nanny Fine. To be fair, she wasn't rude or aggressive - but I don't think she tried very hard to understand your point of view.

But I've had some mean messages/pms in my day. Nothing too major though.

There was a website, which I posted at for a few months, at which I don't look back upon fondly. Some of the people were okay, but my overall experiences there weren't pleasant.

The main topics of the forums were to do with conspiracies, politics, and a bit about theories such as time travel, etc. They had an Off Topic discussion board, which is the case with most forums, so, not knowing much about the other stuff, I posted general threads (related to music/film etc) in the Off Topic forums. A few posters criticised me and questioned why I was posting these threads.

I would have understood had I been posting these threads in forums assigned for specific topics. But I was posting them in the Off Topic forum where general discussion about this kind of thing was allowed. So I really don't know what problem they had with it.

Another thing I didn't like was that every year they had a competition called the "Death Pool" in which members would submit a list of well-known people they thought were likely to die during the year. Whoever had the most people die on their list won. I personally thought that was quite sick - almost as though they were taking advantage of other people's deaths, in a way.

I take that back.

I've had ONE super bad experience. I had someone on another forum tease me because I was Mormon. He would like, ask me how many other wives my husband had. Whatever. I don't even post there anymore. And it wasn't like I was, "ZOMG LOOKIT ME I'M A MORMON LOLOLOLOL" I just causally mentioned it in a religion thread. Bah.

How stupid of him.

I'm not a Mormon myself but I've met several of them and they have been lovely people and very polite. While I don't share all of their religious beliefs, I have a lot of respect for them.

I've been picked on because of my own beliefs and it's not fun.

I had a member that claimed I stalked them and just made a big to-do out of nothing. I just enjoyed chatting back then, and tried to talk to everyone and make friends. Thankfully, I have plenty of real-life friends and a great girlfriend currently, so ha. :) I did NOT have romantic interests in that fugly person that claimed I stalked them, let's just say that.

Andrea
Some people are just cowards. The reason this person probably pm'd you instead of saying something on the boards is because he/or she knew they would get bashed for it. I'm glad that you're back Andrea. Don't let these internet bullies drive you away. :)

you can tell that with both those websites they are not even moderated properly. that's why people are allowed to post whatever they want, no matter how offensive and terrible it is, and you tube and IMDB do jack- all about it. which is why you end up having to rate down or hide their comments. i do not want to read that rubbish and some of the comments usually aren't related to the video at all. which is even more absurd.

I was banned from Wrestlecrap's message boards because I was jokingly posting an image of Bart Simpson writing of the chalk board of Scientology being an "evil" cult. This came off of the heels of Bart's voice actress, Nancy Cartwright (who is a Scientologist in real life) robocalling in order to get the word out about Scientology.

I already posted in the Sitcoms Online's sports forums about how I had just been banned from the506.com because of a disagreement that I had with the moderator, JP Kirby over using his site as a point of reference on Wikipedia. Previously, he threatened to ban me because he disapproved of me (or the manner) bumping threads that I started.

1-Getting dumped by someone on Facebook (When someone takes you off your friends list on purpose).

2-Having forum arguments because your opinions are extremely different.

3-YouTube telling me to remove a video because of infringements.

4-Going to a webpage and find out that it's porn!

I was kicked off of YouTube once because of a copyright infringement made from Paramount Pictures (Viacom as a whole seems to be really paranoid about their movies and TV shows making it on YouTube).

I was also banned from Stucknut (http://www.stucknut.com/) (a fan site of sorts for sports commentator Jim Rome) for making an off the cuff joke about the actor Jay Mohr's (who is a regular fill in host/caller to Jim Rome's radio show) wife Nikki Cox's face of late. I joked that she with all of that collagen in her lips/botox in her face, she's starting to look like the Joker. Well low and behold, it turns out that Jay Mohr himself, actually uses/visits the Stucknut message boards on a regular basis. So shortly thereafter, I was bombarded with attacks against me. I was called "gay", and told that I would still "hit it", and I must be interested in women you look like Sarah Jessica Parker, etc. Basically, "wife smack" was off limits and that I would be banned for "trolling off Jay Mohr".

Sharop

^ The same person who called me a freak is also blaming me for his decision to stay away from the forum we post on (he's been away for a few weeks, with the exception of yesterday when he made one post.)

He's basing it on an incident that happened over two years ago when I asked another member if they knew his address. I realise that this sounds a strange thing to do but it was shortly after we had had a falling out (we used to be quite friendly.) I was feeling unhappy about it and thought if I did something like send him a card or a gift it might mend things. That was my reason for asking another member if they knew his address. The other member replied and said that, although I had good intentions, it would likely creep him out.

So I left things at that. I've never tried to find out his address, nor anyone else's, since then.

I really don't see how this could be a factor in his desire to stay away from the forums at the moment. Like I said, this happened two and a half years ago, and he was posting regularly from then until last month. He has also picked on me about several things, and in general, treated me very badly for the last few months. I have been complaining about his behaviour and reporting some of his posts to the forum admin, but that is all. I have done nothing to him to make him leave - we have had disagreements, yes, but I do not single him out and bully him the way he sometimes does with me, I don't mention him at all on the forum or make fun of him (again, as he sometimes does with me), I am not rude to him...I feel quite angry and insulted that he is making me look like a bad person when he is the one who has treated me unkindly.

Yeah, 2004 was just an all-around bad year for SO, I think. 2003 was intense, too. At one point CC was in such bad shape that TJ considered shutting it down permanently (at the time, it was just him and Pavan as admins - Seth and Janice were both just regular posters).

Double post but I have to reply to this one!

YES 2003/2004 were the worst years. I remember back when I was a Wings/Ned & Stacey fan and had a cruddy fansite up for THC there used to be another fangirl that would stalk me down constantly (Ms. Meow/Mrs. Thomas Haden Church and her friend/alternate account) on every site I went to and she always thought she was the better fan, ect. I have to say, Clay might actually benefit from not being here for a while. Re: Famous Trolls on The506?

J.P.'s issues w/ Wikipedia in the first place
http://www.the506.com/ramblings/20071020.html

The problem with Wikipedia

There are two cornerstones of the user-generated content revolution on the Internet: Wikipedia and YouTube. And just like YouTube is under siege from copyright holders who wouldn't recognize good publicity if it bit them in the behind, Wikipedia is under siege from within its own site.

I used to be a Wikipedian. I joined really early - summer of 2002. Back then, the article about my hometown (a capital city of 50,000 people) was just a few lines, and the larger city to the south didn't even have one. I fleshed them both out the first night I joined. I spent a lot of time in 2002 and 2003 writing articles about various cities all across Canada, mostly using data from Statistics Canada and the websites of the city government, the chamber of commerce, and so on. I hoped they would be later expanded by local residents who knew more about their hometowns than I did; and for the most part that's happened. And I got a lot of credit for it.

A lot of improvements took place over the years - a better user interface, more users contributing better articles. This in turn required more administrators. I never became one, I never was approached to become one, I never really even wanted to be one. I wish I did now.

Back when I was on Wikipedia, having administrative privileges was compared to having a mop. All you did was clean up messes, not much more. I'm not sure what exactly happened to change that, but it did and the website spiraled out of control. I think I first noticed it in early 2006.

All of a sudden, I saw admins foaming at the mouth trying not to add information, but remove it. The size of the Articles for Deletion page ballooned. It wasn't just used to delete garage bands or weird lists like "All Movies with 3 E's in their name", but perfectly legitimate, sourced, factual information. Why? It was "not notable". How does something become notable? There's a lot of criteria out there, but it all comes down to subjectivity. And if the admin doesn't have a damned clue about the subject matter, all the better!

Traffic to the Articles for Deletion page became enough that the "proposed deletion" (or "prod") process started - where an admin slaps a tag on a page saying we are going to delete this article within 5 days unless you provide a good reason why we shouldn't. No reason is ever good enough. ("You can't get this info presented this way anywhere else!" "So?"..."This was featured in the New York Times!" "Yeah, but on page D7"..."she was on a nationally broadcast TV show!" "yes, but in Belgium".) I'd love to know how many person-hours of work have just fallen by the wayside because some people became such short-sighted.

I got the sense that some admins actually took joy in deleting other people's work. All of a sudden, the invitation to "write anything you want about anything" became hollow. And nobody high up within Wikipedia seemed to care.

The final straw for me was the great image purge of fall 2006, which, as far as I can tell, was spurred by a "re-interpretation" by some admins of Wikipedia's picture/image policies. Over the course of a few weeks, tens of thousands of images - politicians, entertainers, anything - were removed under the idea that a "free alternative" either was available or could, at some point in the future, be made available. So instead of good-quality publicity photos of pretty much everyone and everything you could think of, we had blurry photos of maybe 10-20% of them that just happened to be taken by a Wikipedian. The page about this project was called "Wikipedia:Fair use", which was abbreviated to "WP:FU". Somehow that seemed appropriate.

In November 2006, I left Wikipedia for good. Nobody even bothered to give me a farewell message or to ask me to come back.

I checked my user page a couple months ago to see what other crap others have had to say about me. I saw a notification that the Belleville, Ontario article; on a city of about 50,000 people, and that I first wrote back in 2003; was about to be deleted. It was saved, but the fact that it was even considered just speaks volumes about the direction that Wikipedia is taking.

I wouldn't dare join Wikipedia now. The first article that I'd write wouldn't last 2 days.

And although it's the biggest problem, deletionism isn't close to being the only one with Wikipedia. When I was a Wikipedian, even if I knew a lot about the subject at hand, I tried to "dumb it down", or at least write at a level that someone who didn't have a clue about the subject could at least understand it. I'm in the minority there. Scientific articles are especially bad for this. Unless you have a degree in math, try reading this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_number).

My hope is that as the user-generated content revolution marches on, someone will come up with a mainstream alternative to Wikipedia, one where everyone is welcomed to write whatever they want, and if it's not up to snuff, it gets improved instead of removed. Is that too much to ask?

I recently posted a comment on youtube that I was against Squeaky Fromme being released from jail (the girl did try to kill a president, for heaven's sake!) and I was blasted - I mean blasted - by some really disturbed people. People were threatening to kill me for that. One guy said he'd do worse to me than "what tate got."

What is WRONG with some people????
She has a fan club??

The other day I was looking at a thread about what foods people refuse to eat. One person contributed "balut", and I did a Google search on it to see some more information since I had never heard of it. The pictures that accompanied the search will be ingrained in my brain forever. Ouch.
eep...I'm curious now, but don't think I want to find out!

Bad experiences with people: Well, losing friends over petty disagreements always sucks. I was unwantingly...idk, hit on I guess...about 6 years ago by someone who turned out to be kind of disturbed. Been called some nasty names in PMs, but it was always by some moron whom I was arguing with anyway...probably because they were a moron.

Bad experiences not involving people: James' post reminded me of this...Never search images of Harlequin Babies. OH DEAR GOD.

I think that it was you, Jack. I think that Angela said that you had a voice like Terry Jacks, and you just went all Dog Day Afternoon on her. ;)
