This is pretty much a thing of the past now, other than the news, but for years local TV stations would air local shows rangings from music shows, news specials, sporting events, movie related shows, talk shows, kids shows and on and on.


I thought this would be a fun thread to do. What are some of the local shows you grew up with that you remember or at least know of??

Growing up in upstate New York, in the late fifties, I watched WSYR-TV,
Channel 3 in Syracuse, New York. I remember watching Popeye Theater, hosted by "Salty Sam" (Bill Everett) on Saturday mornings and Popeye
Funhouse, hosted by Denny Sullivan on weekday afternoons. Sullivan also
hosted a mid-day variety show, Denny Sullivan Gang and even got his
picture in the national magazine, TV Radio Mirror once. Everett also
did double duty, as the local weatherman. There was also a live host on
their Three Stooges program; I think his name was John Gray. The
careers of both Sullivan and Everett are discussed in the book Hi There,
Boys and Girls!: America's Local Children's TV Programs, by Tim Hollis
(2001), published by University Press of Mississippi; along with many other
local hosts from coast to coast. Quite an interesting book, especially as a
chronicle of a bygone era.

But all of the shows you mentioned are syndicated shows, not local
programs that featured local hosts and/or local talent (the subject of the
original thread). There's a difference. Another example would be North
Carolina's beloved singing cowboy, Fred Kirby, who for many years hosted
The Rascals Club (with Little Rascals comedy shorts) on WBTV,
Channel 3, in Charlotte, N.C.

Growing up in New Jersey in the 60s and early 70s, there were kids shows hosted by Sandy Becker, Soupy Sales, Chuck McCann, Officer Joe Bolton and Carol Corbett. I also remember Birthday House with Paul Tripp and Wonderama with Sonny Fox and later Bob McAllister. There was also the local version of It's Academic that was hosted by Art James.

In 1972, I move to Minnesota and remember kids show hosts Casey Jones and Roundhouse Rodney as well as Clancy the Cop and Willie Ketchum. Around lunch time, there was a show called Dial 5, which featured a Dialing for Dollars segment.
