The CW still has remake fever.
The network that dusted off “90210” and “Melrose Place” for primetime is combing through other old titles, CW Entertainment prexy Dawn Ostroff said Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters during the Dub net’s portion of the TV Critics Assn. press tour, Ostroff said she’s interested in perhaps reviving another dormant femme-centric series next year.

“There are other shows we’re looking at, but we can’t talk about it yet,” she said.

Remakes bring a “built-in brand equity,” Ostroff said, citing the number of revived franchises hitting the feature world as well.

Before bringing back an old show, however, Ostroff said it must fit within the CW’s niche young female brand.

“We’re not going to be doing the ‘The Dukes of Hazzard,’ “ she said.

Ostroff also defended CW’s decision to go dark this summer, arguing that the cost of running a handful of original shows during the off-season wouldn’t have been worth it.

“For us to make noise in the summer, we’d have to program the entire lineup,” she said.

That’s why the net opted to push its one original summer skein, “Blonde Charity Mafia,” into the regular season. That unscripted series will now likely air during December and January in “America’s Next Top Model’s” slot (between cycles).

The bigger networks have different needs than CW, she said -- noting that economically, CW also needs to run repeats of its shows in order to amortize costs. But because most of those series are serials, which don’t repeat as well, it’s been a rough summer ratings-wise for the netlet.

With so little circulation, Ostroff said the Dub plans a massive marketing push for fall. CW is also launching its lineup three weeks before traditional premiere week, in hopes of avoiding the late-September clutter.

Competitively, Ostroff said she didn’t believe CW was impacted by the growing success of millennial-targeted nets like ABC Family.

“They skew a lot younger than us,” she said. “We don’t even have many of the same advertisers.”

In speaking of the CW’s women 18-34 demo, Ostroff said she believed the net’s audience would broaden out as its viewers age upward, and younger women take their place.

“We’re becoming more of a must buy,” she said. “We are one of the most efficient places to find young women.”

In other CW news, Ostroff said she hopes to keep “Smallville” and “Supernatural” on the air beyond this season.

Ostroff also said a “90210”/”Melrose Place” cross-over could be in the cards once “Melrose” gets established.

As for the “Gossip Girl” spinoff, which was close to making it on the schedule in spring, Ostroff said the drama is now officially dead.

Ostroff said she’d be open to another stab at a “Gossip Girl” spinoff -- although it likely won’t be based on the “The It Girl,” which is the book spinoff of the “Gossip Girl” books.

I would just to make fun of it if it isn't funny or doesn't have the same feel of the original. Casting and good writers are the key.

And to be fair, I wouldn't watch remakes of my favorite shows like The Wonder Years, either, for fear that the people at the CW might desecrate it with elements that would rile up the Parents Television Council, American Family Association, etc. (If you remember Oliver Beene on FOX, you'd understand.)

If someone remakes All in the Family, I will personally hunt them down and beat them with a shovel. (One of those plastic kinds, though. Not trying to kill anyone).

It's pretty sad that The CW can't come up with their own ideas. However, it is pretty smart of them to capitalize off classics. They already have an audience, and long-time fans are sure to check out the re-vamping of their favorite program. I guess it's all about the money. Whatever.

Both All in the Family and Petticoat Junction are such products of the times in which they were originally made that a modern re-imagining of either one couldn't possibly work. And since the CW isn't likely interested in doing period pieces and setting the remakes in their original time periods they should just forget the whole thing!!!!!

^We were thinking along the same lines Marvo. The times have changed since All in the Family first debuted & many of the the things that where funny then may not appeal to today's viewer. So if they really need to do a remake, wouldn't it be better to have All in the Family part 2 with Joey the grandson? But I'd rather they just left the whole thing alone.

Totally agree. Some (most actually) shows should never be remade because the energy expended in remaking someone else's creative vision could much more productively be put towards something truly original.

Plato had this idea about art being "a copy of a copy" in that there was an ideal world, the real world, and art; art being the least of the three and the furthest removed from "true" reality. The more times something was removed from that ideal the more it suffered. That's kind of getting far afield I guess, but I feel that way about remakes. The very process of remaking or copying dilutes the vision of the original so much that it is almost an insult to that vision.

In this case, ANYONE trying to recreate the magic, the power, the comic timing and the dramatic sense of Carroll O'Conner's "Archie" is absolutely, utterly doomed to failure.

Yes, they made a pilot in 2004 that never aired. It was only shown at Dark Shadows fan conventions.

Yeah, definitely...neither show is mentioned up there at all...and why on God's green earth would The CW want to remake AITF and PJ in the first place? Come on, people, use common sense...

I read a post with the year 1991 mentioned, and that reminded me of the revival of WKRP in Cincinnati around that time as The New WKRP in Cincinnati. All I remember is that the theme song was updated to sound like 1991, which I thought sucked. I'm thinking the plots were updated as well since I've never watched it and never will.

Yeah I agree. I think Smallville should of ended a long time ago. I was surpised to learn that Smallville got the heads up for a 9th season. I still watch the show but its no way as good as it use to be. A lot of the charectors that I loved when Smallville started are no longer on the show.

He said his goodbye's to his Earth mom and off to The North Poll he went. Got The Fortress of Solitude built and began his 12 year training to become Superman. The Clark Kent on The Smallville TV show however just keeps running away from The man he is sopposed to be. He would rather be with Lana or whoever then becoming the hero of the world. And being a farm boy. I keep asking myself why do I still watch it? I have not missed a single episode since Smallville debuted in 2001.

I've never watched either of the series, but I would love for the creators to say F You and end them. Then The CW would be screwed.
