You forget, Lorelai Gilmore is also a single Mother, so what's to stop her from dating? Considering she's only had a few lovers in all the years the show has been on the air, she's not exactly burning up the bedsheets in Stars Hollow.
As far as respecatblity goes, Lorelai is a smart, independant woman who despite having made a few mistakes in the past, raised a wonderful daughter, is liked in her community and runs a successful business. I know she's not the true definition of the "sitcom Mom," with the house in suburbia, wisecracking kids and a husband, but she's okay in my book.
