Just wondering, has anybody called the old toll free number lately? I don't know if anybody is aware of it but it's being used by a roofing company.

For some unknown reason, knowing that the number is now a roofing company number depresses me....maybe because...I don't know...it just makes it seem so FINAL that UM is gone...and that that whole time and era is irretrievably lost.

I called once several years ago when it was still UM. Kinda funny it's gone now. I wonder if the roofing company will get any tips.

Me too :( And the Spike revival is not really a revival after all, in my view. To me, UM just seems gone.
But at the same time, as long as the fanbase continues to discuss like this forum, even after all these years that the original show has been off the air, in a way, it's still there, not completely gone. And that's a little comforting, even if the era is past.:)

Oh I'm so sad! I called about 2 months ago and it was still UM. I would call just to call and then hang up. I'm a dork, I know! Does this mean....gulp...that it's really over? :eek:

By nature, I'm a very nostalgic person, and I don't like change when it comes to stuff like this. My dad told me once kinda half joking around, that no matter when I lived, that I'd always be attached to my first 15 years. I think that's true though... the '80s being over is still hard enough for me sometimes, the 90s being gone and getting older too, just feels like the Twilight Zone!

Beings that I've been into UM since I was 11 or 12, it's a similar feeling, especially when you'd see the old reruns in syndication for years and years, it felt like they weren't very far away. Even a case from 1989 being on Lifetime in 2005.

It did lose alot of its roots after Stack died, but the reruns still made it feel "half connected". When they had the toll free number, it was like a comfort knowing you could still call in with tips. Now that they've finally disconnected even that, it's like there's absolutely NO traces of the old show.

Heck, Spike couldn't even keep the old 800 number! :( When it still was in operation last year too.

That is sad!!!!

BUT, I have to say this forum and the strength of the following is a testament in my view, to UM and Robert Stack. Of all the "reality crime" shows, that one had, by far, the most profound effect and sticks with people for years (decades) later.

It's also sad because, to me, it makes me feel like a lot of these cases are being forgotten about, but Im hoping that's not true.

Yeah, my phone went on the fritz last week and I called the UM hotline to see if it was my phone or just that particular number I was dialing... and I got the roofing company.

Such a bummer.
