I often add a holiday greeting from Thanksgiving to New Years. I have nothing against kids, but I don't like having to listen to a six year old trying to give the message, then his four year old sister do the same.

What's in your outgoing phone message -- music, something funny or the standard greeting?

Something like, "Hi, you've reached Allison [last name] at [number]. If you are a person calling, you can text me at the same number or leave me a message. If you are a place of business calling, just leave me a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible."

(I was getting a LOT of wrong numbers for the longest time, so I kept that in mind for my greeting, stating my name AND the number. Had a friend do it for me. It's worked pretty well.)

On my landline phone the answering machine is preprogramed and just says "leave a message at the tone."

On my cell my messag goes like "Hey this ____, leave me a message and I'll get back to you."

Mine says "You have reached XXX-XXXX. I can't answer the phone right now but if you leave your name and number I will get back to you ASAP."

my least favorite message is one that seems to be very popular in our town - they record their home-made rap song (the extended version) at blaringly-loud and completely distorted volumes, laced with obscenities and otherwise completely unintelligible lyrics, which cuts off abruptly after about three minutes and just the beep.

...of course the perfect message to leave in this situation would be "Yo, this is Kan-YE West, I heard about your music and wanted to offer you a deal with my label" then leave them the number of some other idiot with the same type of message.

I'm bout to change mine to just the automative "you have reach 555-555-5555" one cos I don't want everybody knowing who's phone it is.

On my cell I think mine just says- Hey you've reached Kyle, I can't get to the phone right now, leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as possible, thanks.....something towards those lines.

My greeting on both my home phone and cell are just the basic, "Pease leave a message and I'll call you back."

I listened to it so now I know it. My message is "Hi, this is Mickey, I am not home or away from my phone, please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you and have a good day."

I was thinking about changing it and making it sound less like a office voicemail since I'm no longer unemployed.

The outgoing message I have is pretty basic. "Hi, I can't come to the phone right now. Please leave your name and number. I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks, bye."

I just got a new phone, so I have no idea. I guess the Verizon robot, like Sarah said.

Our landline is a robot, too.

For anyone out there who has Verizon that's confused about changing your voice mail:
call your voice mail, press 4, and wait until it says "to change your voice mail greeting press...." and VIOLA. Change-able.

just changed it to "your call has been forwarded to an automatic voice message system. (number) is not available. at the tone, please record your message. when you are finished recording, you may hang up or press 1 for more options." (yes, it's me talking. wrote down what the robot said and read from it)
