This time last year Warner Bros announced they were developing a remake of the Errol Flynn-starring Pirate classic "Captain Blood" with Phil Noyce onboard to direct.

But with Noyce's dance card all but booked up these days, seems Jeff Robinov has decided it best to assign the task to another director - or two. And like Noyce, they're Australian.

Michael and Peter Spierig, best known for helming the low-budget Aussie horror romp "Undead", have been enlisted to bring Peter Blood - the doctor who abandons his practice to be a Pirate in the Caribbean - back to the big screen.

John Brownlow will write the screenplay.

After WB and producer Bill Gerber dusted off the library title and had Brownlow do a faithful first draft, they sought out pitches from filmmakers. The Spierig siblings won the gig with a bold animatic presentation, Gerber said.

"At first, I felt like I was in that scene in 'The Player,' where Buck Henry pitches the sequel to 'The Graduate,'" Gerber tells Variety. "But when I took a look at their animatic depiction of a pirate battle in space, it had such a distinctive visual look to it that I said, 'Great, I get it.'"

The Spierig Bros' latest film, the vampire pic "Daybreakers", finally opens in theaters this January - two years after it was completed.. or thereabouts.
