A reliable scooper tells Moviehole that pop-muffins Zac Efron and Brittany Snow have been approached to co-star opposite Miley Cyrus in a reboot of the classic “Gidget” film series (You’ll recall they’re the classics that launched Sally Field to fame!). Apparently this is all coming together quite quickly...

Said flick is envisioned to be the first in a long-line of “Gidget” movies. The musical-comedy will feature popstress Cyrus in the titular role, that of a young girl who discovers surfing and love (in that order) during one transitive summer. Efron is, we suspect, being sought to play the love interest.

Now neither Efron or Snow are signed, as far as I can gather, and the producers are merely feeling them out at the moment. Still, thought you'd be interested kids!

Sandra Dee originated the role of Gidget in Paul Wendkos’s 1959 original. The flick was one of the first "beach movies" and was followed by two sequel films, various television series, several telemovies… and lots of imitators. Field took over the role of Gidget in a short-lived TV series.

TRIPLE BOO!!!! Can't believe that they are approaching the adorable and perfect "Gidget" type Brittany Snow, but not as Gidget??? Miley Cyrus?.....I love the "Gidget" franchise, but they are destroying it with Miley......YUCK!...........If anything Miley should be best friend Laroo and Brittany as Gidget.

If they remade the Gidget film with one of those actresses in Disney Channel's semi-videotaped sitcoms (Miley Cyrus), i predict the film could be a critical and box-office failure like Pluto Nash. Also, why the hell would they cast Miley Cyrus in this film? Couldn't they have hired somebody else for the title role?

Gidget was a product of a more innocent time (and played by two icons, Sandra Dee and Sally Field). Some things should just be left in the past.

P.S. Tweety, is "fourple" a word? I guess it is now.

lol, I got that word from a Brady Bunch episode... while talking to Marica, Jan swore to something, and then emphasized it by saying "I double swear! I triple swear! I..I...I fourple swear" before Marcia corrected her and said that quadruple swear would be the proper term. I don't remember what episode that was... but that's where I got "fourple" from :)

And you are so right about the timing of the original Gidget movie and today. Some things belong in a certain time and place, and Gidget is one of those things.

Yeah, it was one of the early episodes, Jan was "swearing" that she could keep a secret about something... I don't know if it was Marcia's diary or about some boy Marcia had a crush on.

I'll be the first one to predict, that this "gidget" movie never even gets made....the studio announces these things to get public reaction before a script is even finalized......for example....literally the "I Dream of Jeannie" movie has been talked about for 10 years with always the "in-star" portraying the title role, first it was Alicia Silverstone, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, etc.....never got off the ground....."Grease" has been talked about for years as well and now "The Wizard Of Oz".

Yuck, double yuck and triple yuck! Thank God that never got done!

And I can just see the computer generated Wizard of Oz movie now!

...there have been seven "Gidget"s over the past 50 years, in theatrical films and TV:

Sandra Dee (1959)
Deborah Walley (1961)
Cindy Carol (1963)
Sally Field (1965-'66)
Karen Valentine (1969)
Monie Ellis (1972)
Caryn Richman (1985-'87)

And now, Miley Cyrus? Does SONY/Columbia want to extend some of her "Hannah Montana" magic to their "franchise"? Are they THAT desperate for the teen audience she attracts for Disney?

Of course....

Probably both.

Snow, Efron, and pre-hippie 60s go together well as Hairspray would suggest. Meaning Miley wouldn't be at Disney [or Warner Brothers as they made Hairspray], but Columbia!! All they need is to do like Hairspray and set it when the original came out; just look at how many of their age loved that, and I did...I'd go with Amanda Bynes had this been done earlier..
