Terry Fox was a man who lost his leg to cancer. In 1980 he decided to run across his country of Canada to raise money for cancer research and awareness. After getting sponsorships and a transport van Fox set off in his run across Canada from St. John's Newfoundland. His run was called the Marathon of Hope. He ran 26 miles each day on good leg and a prosthetic leg. People would stop and give him donations if they saw him. He attended a CFL game and several large events during his run. But before he reached the end of his run. His cancer returned and spread to his lungs. On September 1, 1980 Terry had to end his run when he became ill. After being hospitalized people around Canada and other countries began raising money for cancer research in Terry's honor. On June 28,.1981 he lost his battle with cancer. He died one month shy of his 23rd birthday. Today in Canada and other countries Terry Fox Runs are held to raise money for cancer research.

For sure, there's a statue of him in Thunder Bay. I remember the whole run well (well, at least when he hit Ontario and it really picked up momentum). I was at the rally in Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto. A run like that back then was absolutely unheard of. (Then Rick Hansen followed with his wheelchair trek, Man in Motion). The pain Terry went through was incredible. What strength and courage. His brother Doug still works tirelessly against cancer to this day.

Terry died a year to the day after my own father died (June 28th, 1980).
