View Full Version : Paul Stamper - paroled?

I've heard that Paul Stamper has been out on parole since 2002. Is this true or did I just hear wrong? I hope so, because I do not like the thought of him being out of the streets. If anyone doesn't remember, he's the guy who put a hit on his wife (who escaped serious injury, but her friend had her throat slit and somehow survived), beat his wife on numerous occasions, and even pulled her and her new boyfriend over(after they separated) pretending to be a cop and shot him and abducted her. (And that doesn't even count his other assault and theft charges) He was supposed to get 35 years and even if he didn't kill anyone, the fact that he's attempted it is pretty disturbing. Doesn't seem like a fellow you'd want to be out of prison. Not to mention his ex-wife would probably be on edge again. Even though stalking laws are now in place, it would still be pretty upsetting to know your abusive ex-husband is walking around free again.

Hopefully Theresa has a restraining order and Paul is off making a new life for himself. I just hope he doesn't hurt other people.

How could a guy like that change? Oh yeah, he probably found God in prision...I mean, they all do don't they???

I wouldn't count on him being reformed, at least not entirely. If I were Theresa, I would be on my guard even all these years later.

Ugh, I wonder what lies he told the parole board...found God? learned his lesson? he sent apologies to everyone?

Won't be surprised if his next wife ends up being held captive...

Well, you folks have to remember, that Stamper was sentenced under 1985 laws which were different in Oklahoma than current laws. Stamper had a plea deal and was sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempted murder and kidnapping. He became eligible for parole under the old laws after serving 5 years. He was turned down the first two times, on the third time he was granted parole. He was released from prison on January 23rd, 2002 after having served 10 years. It is unclear whether he is still under supervised parole? It appears he is no longer on parole itself but is on probation and will be on probation until April 21st, 2027. As basically it was mandated at the time he was sentenced that whenever he was paroled from prison that even after his parole was discharged he would still be on probation for 25 years after his release from prison.

Any idea about if he's kept a clean record since he was paroled? That guy is pretty scary. He seemed like the worse kind of control freak and was obviously capable of extreme violence. I wonder if he's ben able to change, or mature, or learn enough self control to no longer be a threat.

I know this is going to sound ridiculous of me, but I'm curious. They made a TV movie of this case and at the part when UM was having tipsters call their hotline, one woman mentioned she had been forced to marry him and threatened or something? Since it was a TV movie, I'm guessing that was fabricated to increase the drama, but I am a little curious to know if that part was true just because he would seem the type to continue his abuse. The movie did get many other crucial things right, down to the guy's alias, etc.

Is the movie called Escape From Terror? I haven't seen it and I'm really curious about the woman claiming she was forced to marry him. Do you remember what she said the circumstances were? Was she pregnant and felt she had to marry him or did he threaten her family if she didn't marry him?

I haven't seen the UM segment in a long time, but the spike version I watched omitted a lot of info, including the attack on the person who was stabbed while sleeping over on Theresa's couch. (I think that was the situation, I'm fuzzy on the details of course...)

Yes, it was called Escape from Terror: The Theresa Stamper Story. It's actually quite decent for a TV movie and they reenact the car scene better than UM does. The movie actually didn't cover the couch scene, which was surprising. It definitely did cover the shooting through the window. It also showed him taking drugs (again, not sure if this was to heighten the drama) and covered his fraudulent operations in the oil business.

The woman that called into the hotline (and had other corroborating phone calls for it) said that he had threatened her into marrying him and kidnapped her, saying if she didn't he would kill her family, yet she had somehow gotten away. Then the movie showed that he was with another woman and had gotten her pregnant (they used the same alias as UM mentioned). I found it pretty fascinating and if that part was added for drama, it certainly did help dramatize it.

Thanks for the info! I sure wish they'd run this movie again, it sounds very interesting.

It's hard to believe that Stamper was sentenced to 35 years for all those various and violent crimes he was convicted of, but was already paroled by 2002.

I wonder if he's assumed an alias (again) and dropped off the radar or if he's living under his real name while leading a normal life.

Just an FYI for everyone...

The TV movie called Escape from Terror: The Theresa Stamper Story (also spelled Teresa) has an IMDB page.

The movie was released in 1995 (on Lifetime, I think) and there's not much discussion on the IMDB site at all. It does say that it was produced by Cosgrove/Muerer.

It's so old now, I'm wondering if they'll ever run it again. At this point, it's not on their schedule: http://www.mylifetime.com/movies/escape-terror-teresa-stamper-story

The IMDB users gave it a 5.7 out of 10 stars. Not too bad for a made for tv movie, imo.

Yeah, most TV movies have pretty low ratings. It's definitely better than most of their films. I liked the two leads a lot, but it's been ages since I last saw it.

I hope the real Theresa is living comfortably and he is staying away from her. It must have been so traumatizing. Hopefully he has no idea where she lives.

He got 30 years in prison for the original sentences. He then got an additional 25 years worth of suspended prison sentences that would take effect when he was released from prison on the original 30 years of original charges. So, in 2002 they kicked in and he will be on probation or parole until 2027. He is not flying under the radar, he is being supervised by somebody, especially in law and order in Oklahoma, I can guarantee he is not running around without being watched.

That's a relief, kadrmas. Still a little unsettling that he's free at all, but at least he's being watched.

You never know. It may show up on LMN. They tend to show movies going back to the early 90's.

Thanks for the info. I watched it last night and thought it was good.

They used artistic license, of course. The guy who played Paul was actually good looking. lol

And didn't Teresa and Paul live in a trailer? In the movie, he bought her a big fancy house that she admired but never thought she'd get to live in. They also left out the assassination attempt on Teresa where her friend was the victim of the mistaken hit.

Lol I agree. :) I thought he did a pretty good job showing how unhinged the guy was, too.

I would love to know how much of the movie was made up. For example, did she and Paul really have a child that the segment left out, perhaps by Teresa's request? Was he shooting heroin? I also thought it was weird they left out the assassination attempt.

Also, if any of the allegations made at the end of the movie (him forcing another woman to marry him, threatening and kidnapping her) are true, I guess they weren't able to pin it on him. And I wonder if they added the pregnant woman with children he was living with for drama, too.

Totally random, but do you guys remember when the segment shows Paul's friend helping him escape from jail? The friends forced a female security guard, at gunpoint, to open the cell. When Paul comes out, he throws her in and you can see inmates in the back. I am wondering if that female security guard was harmed by those inmates. Does anyone happen to know?

I just finished watching this on YouTube. Type in Teresa Stamper and it will come up. A lot was left out but it does show their child (daughter) and the woman he was married to. She was pregnant. It also shows her children.

Wonder if Stamper has kept out of trouble with the law just cause he is probably old and frail now.

I actually knew this guy. My brothers both worked for him in the oil fields. I knew him during all of this and remember the day he shot Chris and kidnapped Teresa. The movie is very true to the actual events.

Wow, do you know what happened to him? Looks like he may be back in jail if this is him (https://www.inmateaid.com/inmate-profiles/paul-stamper), but just a guess. I just watched the UM episode and got curious.

Just saw this story for the first time and found this relatively new article about Teresa and where she is now. Heartwrenching to hear about her difficult life both before and after Paul and the toll that trauma can take on a life even when a person is "lucky" enough to survive as she was, but also incredible to hear about her resilience.

I’m so glad you posted this link because I found it and was going to post it too. I had no idea that Paul and Teresa had a daughter.
