Phoenix -- Gastric bypass surgery has gone robotic at one Arizona hospital.

Using robots, doctors at Banner Gateway Medical Center can perform the surgery from inside the person's body, KPHO-TV reported.
"The robot allows you to perform the surgery (not only) in high definition, but also in three dimensions," said chief of surgery Dr. Rob Schuster.
Schuster said the procedure is less invasive and painful and it cuts the risk of infection.
Doctors use state-of-the-art technology with a three-dimensional image of the surgical area. The display controls the surgical instruments, working with the doctors' hands, wrists and eyes in real time.
"It really allows us to perform a more precise and perfect operation," Schuster said.
Schuster said the new procedure will result in shorter hospital stays and shorter recovery times, so patients are able to return more quickly to their normal routines.
Banner Gateway Medical Center is one of only a handful of hospitals in the country that use this technology.
KPHO's report did not address any additional costs or risks from the assisted surgery.

Brad Russ 07-27-2009, 07:07 PM If I had the need for this kind of surgery, I could definitely see myself atleast looking into it. Some of life's greatest inventions were once laughed at, and ended up being very useful. Obviously I hope I'm never in need of this this kind of thing, but yeah, I can definitely see looking into it as a possibility if I were. I'm all about alternative choices, and new ideas!!

Brad Russ 07-27-2009, 07:30 PM The more I think about this, the more it sounds like a synopsis for an episode of the twilight zone. lol! To be honest, now that I really think about it, I think I'd have to think long and hard about doing something like this. Reading more about it, it actually sounds kind of creepy. I think traditional avenues would be the more likely road I'd choose over something like this.

It depends on how safe it is, but at this stage I probably wouldn't love the idea. I don't think it's a ridiculous thing, though. There is more precision involved, steadier "hands". I guess there's pluses and minuses to it. I don't rule anything out just because it's new and different, though.
InspectorExstead 07-28-2009, 03:45 AM It sound so futuristic and...weird. I don't know. I don't think I'd be comfortable enough to let a robot operate on me. Like Ashlee said, humans can certainly do something wrong, but I'd feel safer knowing a human was operating on me.

It sounds interesting and I agree that as long as I knew that a human was controlling it or at least monitoring it, it might be okay. Humans make mistakes too, so I don't really know what I would do. Maybe if it's proven successful, then I might consider it. Technology is amazing, though.
