Larry Linville left the series because after five years, he didn't feel there was anything else he could do with the character. While the other characters could grow and stretch out, Frank Burns was pretty much a one-note character.

Even Loretta Swit felt the Hot Lips/Frank affair had run its course and asked that Margaret be given a new love interest. Without Margaret, Frank grew even more insane and creepy and became the butt of even more jokes.

The other actors hated to see Linville go, but they understood why. It was said he was the exact opposite of Frank Burns, whereas to some degree the other actors had aspects of their personalities in their characters, so Linville felt it was time to move on.
