I know some of you might laugh at that but it's really not funny cause he could have gotten hurt.

Rivers can't thread tire, is bested by prep at camp

Seemingly one of the biggest sports stories yesterday on the Web was that Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was beaten in a passing competition by high school quarterback Will Nunn at a camp Rivers hosted in his native Alabama.

The event was caught on video, shown on a local news show and has now made the rounds in several blogs. (It can be seen on the Union-Tribune's Web site in the Bolts Blog at chargers.uniontrib.com.)

Yesterday, Rivers was kidded by the U-T's Kevin Acee about his “defeat” and facetiously asked why he didn't have the video confiscated, as Nike representatives reportedly did when a college kid dunked over LeBron James at a recent basketball camp.

“I didn't know it would be such a big hit,” Rivers said, laughing. “It was fun. How bad would it have been if I would have won the QB challenge at my own camp against the local high school kid? The kid did a great job. . . . He didn't know how popular he was going to get. That's all over the country, that video. It's fun.”

In the clip, Rivers is shown throwing directly over every tire while Nunn hits the targets. As Rivers pointed out, the tires were pretty low.

“The tires were about as high as my little boy,” Rivers said. “I'm used to throwing to big targets. . . . For two days I told these kids – they were throwing these balls low, at the receivers' knees – I said, 'There is no ball a receiver hates more than a low ball. Put it up in their face where they can see it.' We get in this challenge and had these tires down there about two feet.”
