View Full Version : 9 to 5 Had The Most Confusing Run...
callmetootie 06-19-2001, 08:40 PM Here's how confusing the run was:
1982-1984 [1982 was Jeffrey Tambor, 1983-1984 was someone else]
1986-1988 [in syndication, not Mr. Hart, Sally Struthers is in it, playing a character not in the movie]

That SOMEONE ELSE was Peter Bonerz, better known as zany dentist Jerry Robinson on "The Bob Newhart Show" from 1972-78. Bonerz had a distinguished career acting in feature films, including the lead in 1967's "Funnyman," and notable supporting roles in "Medium Cool," (1968) "Catch 22," (1970-co-starring Newhart) "Fuzz," (1972-co-starring Burt Reynolds and Raquel Welch) and 1980's "Serial," co-starring Martin Mull, Tuesday Weld and Tom Smothers, among others.
Bonerz has gone on to a very busy career as director, though he has on occasion turned up in cameos, most notably in later Newhart series "Bob" and "George and Leo" during the '90s. Additionally, he had a regular role in the short-lived NBC series "Three Sisters," circa 2001.
scotsguy 05-04-2010, 12:29 PM Also Valerie Curtin was dropped but when it came back with Sally Struthers,Valerie Curtin was back but Rita Moreno was gone.
I like the early series with Valerie Curtin,Rita Moreno and Jean Marsh in it.
Dr. Thong 05-04-2010, 03:02 PM It's not confusing, really. The show was canceled by ABC in 1983 and the syndicators decided to revive it a few years later.
And Jean Smart was in 9 To 5? Was she a supporting character?
I barely remember this show. As I recall, it was okay, but the original movie was much better.
ThomasE 10-30-2010, 06:43 PM Not Jean Smart but it was Jean Marsh. I like Rita Moreno's episodes a bit more.

Jeffery Tambor played Mr. Hart in 1982, and was replaced by Peter Bonerz (1982-83). The show was cancelled in 1983. When it was brought back for syndication, there was no Mr. Hart. There also was no Violet or Roz.
It would be nice if the ABC version of this show could get a dvd release. I don't care about the syndicated version.
Kasey 06-15-2013, 04:45 PM It was also odd to see this show transition from being shot on film to videotaped.
I remember thinking Rita Moreno's 'Violet' was too ethnic and not like the Lily Tomlin character at all. One of the running gags was that she was always going off on some Hispanic harangue that no one could understand.

My guess is that the syndicated version was probably shot on a smaller budget, hence, the changeover to a videotaped show.
Conversely, Newhart, although it remained on the CBS network throughout its run, had it's first season shot on videotape, but switched to film for its second season and was shot that way through the rest of the series' run.
catlover79 06-22-2013, 05:32 PM What point did Leah Ayres (now Kalish) come on to the show?
Kasey 06-22-2013, 05:38 PM What point did Leah Ayres (now Kalish) come on to the show?
Leah joined in September 1983 as Linda and the show was cancelled after only a few episodes.
Mr. Television 06-22-2013, 06:19 PM Has the entire 5 seasons of the show ever aired in syndication before?

Thanks.
ThomasE 06-23-2013, 10:30 AM Thanks.
I always thought that Rita Moreno had it going on. I have been a fan for years. For some reason, I always liked the shows that were shot on video tape than film. I later got used to film. 9 to 5 did undergo several changes, that I will admit. I like the first three seasons, though.
Vahan 06-23-2013, 12:07 PM Has the entire 5 seasons of the show ever aired in syndication before?
Why wouldn't it? It had 2 unaired episodes from the third and final season ("Dag Day Afternoon" and "Pillow Talk") at ABC added to the rotation.
I take it your area didn't get the entire 85-episode-rotation.

I've never seen the show in syndication before other than the original syndicated episodes. Just wondering if the entire show was syndicated anywhere.
Vahan 06-23-2013, 12:18 PM Sonny, which version do you think is better? Film or TV Show?

I thought the film version was better.

I couldn't find any of the Struthers credits.
MacLeaper 11-05-2013, 11:14 AM You'd think somewhere along the way, the network would've done a marathon of this show from 9 to 5.;)
That always seemed inaccurate to me though- most full time jobs I know are 8 to 5. It's only 9 to 5 if you don't take a lunch break and your work allows that.
Kasey 02-15-2014, 11:02 AM There are a couple episodes on Youtube from the Sally Struthers era!

Upon the show’s syndicated return with Sally Struthers and an entirely new male cast (plus another boss change between Seasons Four and Five), it settles into some stability… but never real excellence, especially because it seems like the three ladies have become interchangeable in terms of personalities.
