View Full Version : "I Love Lucy" Promoted Domestic Violence, How Can You All Like This Show?
JamesG 07-14-2009, 12:41 PM Ricky sometimes took Lucy over his knee and spanked her.
Also, Lucy at one time attacked Ricky with a pillow.
This show promotes spousal abuse!!!

Jude The Obscure 07-14-2009, 02:40 PM I assume this is a parody post off that guy who kept insisting that the Governor on "Benson" was an abusive father?
Well, uh, yes... but why stop at domestic violence?
It promoted abduction-- Lucy tied up and gagged a showgirl in a broom closet so she could take her place in the act.
It promoted fraud-- Lucy went to the studio and impersonated Ricky's agent.
It promoted causing public panic-- Lucy and Ethel dressed up as "Women From Mars" invading the earth via the Empire State Building.
It promoted escaping from custody-- the four tied up the sheriff and left the jail in Bent Fork, Tennessee.
It promoted defamation of character and invasion of privacy-- Lucy called the Texas oil man a swindler and taped their conversation without his consent to get their investments back.
It promoted smuggling-- Lucy bundled a 25-pound hunk of cheese in a blanket as if it were a baby, so she could get by the duty Ricky wouldn't pay.
There are probably a few dozen other reasons to dislike this show; not the least of which is it portrays life so accurately and seriously. Honestly, we need an escape every now and then.
70s show watcher 07-14-2009, 05:30 PM it promoted celeb stalking lucy stalked countless celebs
MickeyMac 07-14-2009, 06:05 PM So does this mean Lucille Ball was the Tina Turner of the 1950's?
LittleRickyII 07-14-2009, 07:33 PM I would have to say that, while all these behaviors were exhibited on I Love Lucy, the show did not "promote" any of them; rather, it usually illustrated that there were consequences for such bad behavior.

Yeah, as well as the ones from All In The Family, Diff'rent Strokes, One Day At A Time, Little House on the Prairie...

True. Looking at ILL now, it does come across as somewhat sexist. But then I try to remember that that's what society was like back in the 50s. Or so I've heard, I wasn't around in the 50s.
Mr. Television 07-14-2009, 09:17 PM Didn't Ricky threaten to spank Lucy a few times? That sure was abuse. :ohno:

She should have been arrested so many times.
It also promoted bigotry...Lucy made fun of Ricky's English all the time!

Yeah...though Lucy was awfully liberated considering what she did and often got away with.

An old thread that covered that subject quite well: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=196373
I was rereading that one earlier today.
Schmoopie 07-15-2009, 01:59 AM What is the sudden obsession with spankings around here? Just curious. I've seen five or six threads on this very subject. I don't have kids, but if I did, I wouldn't be above spanking, depending on what they did. I was spanked as a child (in some cases a little too hard) and I wasn't traumatized over it, and it didn't really affect me when I became an adult. I mean, beating a child is one thing, but spanking is just supposed to teach them a lesson. Some kids have such smart mouths these days that simply putting them in the corner doesn't work. My best friend in high school told me once that she was acting up in the grocery store and her mother warned her to stop several times. She didn't and she got spanked. This must have been when she was in elementary school, and she told me that she was so embarrassed over being spanked in public that she never did it again.

Nah - Fred and Ethel would have insisted on coming to the hotel too. Had to be that they met in between the beds and Little Ricky was concieved amongst the dust bunnies. ;)

Casting. Gotta keep those storylines fresh! And Elizabeth patterson needed something to do.
