My mom got a bad case of the hives three days ago, and it keeps coming back. She even spent last night in the ER because of it. It's driving her absolutely insane because we have no idea what is causing it all of a sudden. She asked me if I could get online, and get all the info I can about the cause, and cures for the hives, and along with my searching for info on yahoo, I thought I'd post here as well since you all usually have such knowledge on things like this. What are some of the most common causes of hives, and is there a way to get rid of it?? Thanks!!

I'm surprised they didn't tell her to take Benadryl at the hospital. I hear it's most effective on hives/allergies.

I know Frank would get hives under stress and sometimes heat will cause them too.

Give the Benadryl a try though. Hope this helps!! (damn - there I go with the exclamation marks again! ;) )

 You and me with our exclamation points. lol!! What is it about us? My mom actually is on Benadryl, but it's not helping much. They got her on some other meds too. I think you might be onto something with the stress and heat. Our weather has been in the 90's almost all week, and I know my mom is stressed. I'll be sure that they have the air conditioning on during the daytime. Thanks alot Cathie, you're always such a big help!!! :)

Sometimes wiping a wet cold wash cloth does help to deal with the hives.

I haven't read the other replies yet so sorry if this has already been said.

Brad, your mom needs to take some 2 Benedryl ASAP. She needs to repeat it every six hours. Not to exceed eight Benedryl in 24 hours. Also if you have any Hydrocortizone have her apply that to the area or areas that have hives. Have her reapply the Hydrocortizon every few hours. If it doesn't improve have her go back to the ER or to her doctor.

Both the Benedryl and the Hydrocortizone act as anti-inflamatory. Benedryl is an antihistamine.

Thanks for the informative response Jen, I really appreciate it. Damn, you sound like a doctor, you really know what you're talking about. She is taking the Benedryl as you mentioned, and she got next week off from work. The doctor thinks stress may be causing it, so her being home for a week will be really good for her. Thanks again for the advice!! :)

Over the counter allegrey meds work really well. I get hives when I eat Bananas, and Benedryl is great for calming them down.

I hope your mom feels better!

I think there's a connection between nerves and hives. In July of 2000, I woke up in the middle of the night itching like crazy. I thought I had ants in the bed. I was covered with hives. Turned out it was chronic uticaria (medical terminology). I saw a dermatologist. The only medication that worked for me was Zyrtec. I would test it every few months by not taking a Zyrtec, to see if it was gone, but I'd be covered with hives by noon. The doctor told me it would disappear as quick it hit me. It just stopped last year, so it lasted for eight years. Not what you wanted to hear, but that's my experience with hives. I'm sorry for your mother, and I hope it doesn't linger like mine did.
