hi. can anyone tell me what type of dog scruffy was? I am a fan and would like to try and get a dog similar to him.

I'm not sure, but I think he was a Terrier.

At least my memory of him looks like a Terrier.

Sadly, Scruffy is in doggie heaven.

He was on the show The Ghost and Mrs. Muir for both seasons.

I just loved him, and I can still enjoy him on my DVD's that a friend made for me.

I loved his tricks, like when he twirled around!

Well, Scruffy prolly fetched his last newspaper ages ago, but....

Yes, very sad. Hope Lange and Charles Bronson, who played her husband in the first Death Wish film, died witin a few months of each other. Charles Bronson died Aug. 2003, Hope Lange in Dec. 2003. He was in his 80's, and Hope was 70. She is missed.

From my research, Scruffy lived to be 14. He passed away in 1981.

Scruffy (that was his real name) was a mixed wire fox terrier, trained by Karl Lewis. He was described as a dog with a strong willingness and deep desire to do anything for his trainer, as long as he received a toy as his reward. His tricks included running, jumping, retrieving, padding with his paws, and grabbing an article and holding on tenaciously. Like Benji, Scruffy was found at an animal shelter. He had been at a shelter in North Hollywood for nearly two weeks and was scheduled to be put to sleep in two days if no one claimed him. By chance, Miller brought the little dog from the shelter along for the ride to the third audition for "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir." Scruffy was waiting in the car. Miller's boss suggested he show producer Gene Reynolds the pooch because he had a different look from the other dogs. He was untrained but was calm and well-behaved. Reynolds was looking for a dog that acted not like a trained dog but like a real dog. Scruffy (who didn't have a name yet) turned out to be that dog. He got along well with all the cast members, especially Charles Nelson Reilly. After the show ended its two-year run, in 1970, Scruffy (like many human stars) was typecast and had difficulty getting other acting jobs. He did win a guest role on "Barnaby Jones." Later he appeared on "Kung Fu," "Rockford Files," "Streets of San Francisco," "Love, American Style," "Happy Days," "Perry Mason" and other TV series. In 1970, Scruffy won a PATSY Award for "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" and, in 1974, another PATSY for a Chuck Wagon Dog Food commercial. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977.
