I was in the local library yesterday doing some research for my paper for summer school when i took a little break and went online for a bit and just happened to come across this article by this woman talking about "The Facts of Life" and what a great show it was. She said stuff like, "It's so sad that in this day in age the only 'girls' we see on TV are completely unrealistic and unrelatable. They all look like mannequins and act like morons. All they care about is sleeping around and wearing the latest slutty outfit." "'The Facts of Life' was the only show in TV history that I can think of where girls were depicted as people rather than slutty barbie dolls. They liked boys, but they also had ambitions beyond getting laid and dressing like the latest teen sex symbol." I completely agree with her. She also pointed out, "'Facts of Life' ended around the time when we had shows like 'Beverly Hills, 90210' where we saw girls dressing more like they were going to a music video shoot than going to school everyday. None of them acted all that well. The guys on the show were given jucier material and were treated with a level of humanity, whereas the girls were all just walking around acting like bratty, hormonal princesses." She then talked about how while "Facts of Life" seems to be eternally stalled at season 3, "Beverly Hills, 90210" gets the full DVD treatment. "All us classic TV buffs are being ignored. To the brainless DVD distributors, 'classic TV shows' are from the 1990's all the way to last year...or, the really, really old shows where gender stereotypes were dated and horrendoudly old fashioned." Later she pointed this out: "I guess the reason 'Facts of Life' is getting no love is because the girls aren't supermodel-skinny and actually had morals and ambitions in life, as opposed to the skinny, winey Bratz dolls we see today." I fully agree with this woman. Hopefully Sony saw this article, but then again, they're all greedy, "Seinfeld"-obsessed jerks, so it might not have hit a nerve with them. Guess we'll all just have to contend with the episodes that we already have on DVD and online and never be able to see all the episodes we cherish ever again, except maybe in our dreams. For the record, I think "Beverly Hills, 90210" sucks and is a giant pile of fly-infested poop with crappy characters!
