View Full Version : Anyone think SHOUT! will release Season 2?
Edster2973 07-05-2009, 11:51 PM Hello all,
Anyone think SHOUT! will consider releasing Season 2 of Rhoda? I know there was considerable backlash from fans for the less than ideal conditions with the DVD transfers of Season 1, but for me, I found it better than I expected. Don't get me wrong. I'd have preferred uncut, remastered episodes but since that evidently wasn't possible, we got what we got instead. Since I had heard so much negativity regarding the release, I was prepared to be disgusted with it. Overall though I enjoyed it. I've seen many DVD transfers that were much worse, although they did tend to be budget releases admittedly.
In any case, I was wondering if people would be interested in a Season 2 release. Hopefully things will be improved, but even if they aren't, it'd be better than nothing. Of course, this all depends on sales of the first season.
Does anyone know if the first season has done well enough to warrant a Season 2 release?
Thanks in advance.
Ed
scotsguy 07-06-2009, 04:52 AM Hi Ed,
I'd like to see season 2 of "Rhoda" released yes,I have to say regarding edited episodes from season 1,UK cable channels were showing unedited Rhoda episodes in the late 90s unedited,so I do think they exist, the unedited pilot DOES exist.
Its like "The Lucy Show" it was released as a best of,with scenes missing terrible quality, now its been released "The Complete Season One" remastered,in fairness it wasn't Shout who did the orginal Lucy release but it shows how a beloved show can just be released without any proper restoration being done.

I hear what you're saying. I think SHOUT! is simply unable to invest the kind of money needed to do a proper restoration simply because it's a small company. This is why I think it's willing to invest in releasing shows that the bigger companies don't want to release since the bigger companies won't see enough of a return on their investment. SHOUT! on the other hand is just big enough to care about the smaller return.
But it's a double-edged sword. Since they're a smaller company, they probably can't invest mucho $$ into restoration on Rhoda. FOX definitely could, but I think they have passed on the spin-off simply because its parent series, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, didn't make a huge profit for them. Why invest more money just to be guaranteed not to see a return on it? I really think that's what it comes down to, and it'd be the same for you or me if we had stockholders and profit margins to worry about.
In the meantime, I'm glad to get what we can get. Hopefully sales will continue to be healthy so that more releases are coming. Perhaps down the line, when the costs of restoration have come down drastically, FOX or a smaller company will consider doing a restoration process. In the meantime, with the current economy, I'm not holding my breath. It's either taking what they can afford to release right now, or having nothing at all. To me the latter is hardly attractive...

Robert 13 07-06-2009, 10:22 AM Season 2 is tentatively scheduled for a release sometime in October according to Vivendi who I think handles distribution for Shout. I may be wrong about this so don't quote me. But it was listed on their release schedule.

Well, that's good to hear at least. What may have happened is that they went ahead and did the digital transfer of the first 2 seasons, anticipating the set doing well. The same I think has happened with Designing Women, which had its Season 2 release (with artwork) announced by SHOUT! even before Season 1 hit stores.
So if sales are dismal for Season 1 (which I hope they aren't), at least we're *almost* guaranteed a Season 2 release. I'll take that any day. Hopefully SHOUT! will end up releasing all 5 seasons but if not, 2 seasons are better than nothing. Thanks for the heads up Robert 13 (I love your name by the way!).

Robert 13 07-06-2009, 12:02 PM Thanks Ed! :)
Vivendi's release list contains all of Shout's titles plus some others from other studios including Visual Entertainment. So, I think it's accurate. They have "The Patty Duke Show" listed too. I know I would want to know. So I thought I'd post the slighest bit of news.

That's quite alright. Season 5 of The Mary Tyler Moore Show is out that month so we're hardly being deprived. It's just nice to know that it's in the works.

Yeah, like artwork and release date, as well as if this season will have an improved presentation. If it doesn't, I'm ok with that because I can understand how SHOUT! is caught between a rock and a hard place. I'm hoping things are improved, but if they aren't, it's ok. I'd just like to know either way so I'm with you Kristen.
At least things are coming our way for us fans finally... :)

cajunhillbilly 07-16-2009, 12:36 PM this is the quote from the Shout Community about Rhoda
We're doing a lot of preproduction on the second season of Rhoda. After the last release, we're trying very hard to not release a second season before we know, without a shadow of doubt, that we have most--if not all--original broadcast masters in as good of condition as possibly exists.
We're listening to the fans. We know you all want them, but we also know you want them RIGHT. So, while it may take a little longer than most second releases, we're working hard to make sure that when you get them, you get them that way. Thanks for the patience.

scotsguy 07-17-2009, 05:59 PM I'm glad Shout are listening,I've been leaving messages on Shout's Facebook page, bemoaning so many season1 episodes edited,I bought the DVD set, then had a lot of my old vhs episodes of season 1 put on to DVD as they are unedited, don't have all of season1 unedited though.
Here's hoping season 2 will fair better.

:yeahthat :D
McGillicuddy 07-18-2009, 02:04 PM Yes that is encouraging to know that Shout! Factory is listening and responding to consumers (unlike certain other companies *ahem*S*ny, F*x). I wish they would include the unedited pilot and some commentary or participation from Valerie Harper and maybe Julie Kavner.

That would be nice. I sure hope they would include some extras this time around.

SHOUT released Father Knows Best season 1 with a lot of edited episodes. Result: SHOUT heard, and thye found unedited sources for season 2 and 3 (a real surprise for that series). So there is hope!

Again, it depends upon what's available. I have no doubt that full un-edited masters exist, but it'd cost a mint for a small company like SHOUT! to do the proper processing for it, so they have to go with other avenues. Hopefully those will be more improved, but if not, it's better than nothing.
