View Full Version : Would You Ever Legally Change Your First Name?
Wreckless 06-30-2009, 11:31 AM A lot of people want to change their first names, and legally can, through a sought out process. Maybe their parents named them inappropriately, or their first name has a deep meaning behind it, but they don't care about all that and want something different, or maybe people are rebellious, and don't care about their first names and what they'll permanently be as well. So would you change yours? Include all circumstances in your mind when thinking this over. ;)
Me? I would NEVER change my first name. Kyle is perfect a name for me and I thoroughly enjoy it. Glad my parents named me this.
phoebe7165 06-30-2009, 11:40 AM I was told my parents were thinking of naming me Kelly. I wish they did. It would be easier than Andrea!! You wouldn't believe all the times people have gotten that wrong, i.e.Angela, Adrienne or the worse to me, when somebody pronounces it "EN-DRAY-AH". Drives me crazy!! I still wouldn't change it legally because my dad's name was Andrew, so I was named after him.
MickeyMac 06-30-2009, 12:12 PM I would like to change my first name but I would never hear the end of it from my mother. I guess I dont need to since everyone calls me Mickey.
TripperFan 06-30-2009, 12:49 PM I used to hate my first name when I was in school, and for a while asked to be called by my middle name, but it didn't catch on. My mother and two brothers all went by their middle names.
If a particular event occurs within the next few months (and right now, NOTHING is for sure) I will be changing my surname finally.
ThomasE 06-30-2009, 01:12 PM I would never change my name. When it comes to some things, I don't like change. Too much to adjust to. I like the name "Tommie Edmond" and will keep it that way. Heck, I I've been on this board for nine years and have no desire to change my own username. I'm content. LOL.
Big C 06-30-2009, 01:50 PM Never.
Yooch 06-30-2009, 01:55 PM I've had mine for so long (Eugene); I may as well keep it. No point in changing it now. :)
waichingliu81 06-30-2009, 01:58 PM i used to hate my name, which is waiching btw folks. kids at school especially in my class when i was in high school took the piss. but nowadays, i think it is okay. i wouldn't want to change it because a) it is expensive and b) it means having to change the details on my passport and stuff like that and this in itself is a long process. and so i thought, i won't bother doing it.
my sister added vanessa to her name and so she is now called waiyee vanessa liu, although to her friends and collegues she is known as vanessa.
MrCleveland 06-30-2009, 03:39 PM I thought of calling myself Cleveland without a surname...but I don't know.
browneyes106 06-30-2009, 03:41 PM I would change my name if I had to for privacy/safety reasons.
gidgetgrape 06-30-2009, 03:43 PM I've thought about it, but I looked up how to do it once and it seemed really complicated.
Nighthawk76 06-30-2009, 04:04 PM I like my first name, I would never change it. Though I wish it weren't as common that I had to share it with a zillion other people.
Number 9 Dream 06-30-2009, 04:10 PM I actually like my first name and always have. I like how my parents spelled "Kristel". It's unique and not like most of the Kristels out there (Crystal, Krystal, etc.). Plus, it's a beautiful name. I like it and it fits me.
My last name on the other hand.... ;)
sunshinefizzy 06-30-2009, 04:23 PM Like a lot of kids, I didn't like my first name when I was a kid. When I was five or so I loved my aunt's name, Mary. I actually said to my kindergarten teacher and said "You know, everyone calls me Mary at home," She looked at me square in the eye and said "But, we will call you Chelsea in school."
Now, almost 15 years later, I'll keep it. I can't imagine being anyone else.
PZelda 06-30-2009, 04:26 PM Nah, not at all. Besides I have it tattooed on me (my initials, anyway). I'd have to change it to something else with "A" so I'm not stuck with a tattoo that means nothing.
However, I get pocket-dialed a LOT... My first name is more than likely the first one in peoples' contact books in their phones (Allison).
Nighthawk76 06-30-2009, 04:48 PM My last name on the other hand.... ;)
Yeah, me too! I would change mine in a second.
Hollow 06-30-2009, 04:53 PM never ever. my mom named me.
Zoneboy 06-30-2009, 04:53 PM If I changed my first name my parents would be hurt beyond belief. I was the first grandson on both sides and both of my grandfathers were named Charles so it was a no-brainer that I be given that name also. My uncle on my mom's side is also named Charles. A first cousin and my great uncle on my father's side also share that name.

That's so sweet of you. I've never thought about keeping my name because it meant something to my parents.
Never. It would really hurt my mom. She named me after Emily Brontë. She always wanted to name her first daughter Emily ever since she read Wuthering Heights in 8th Grade.
never ever. my mom named me.
My mom named me too. My dad wanted to name me Sarah!
You have a beautiful old-fashioned name, Sarah. I love it.
ZeldaGilroy 06-30-2009, 05:57 PM I hate my first name and my last name, but it's too much trouble to change them and probably too confusing as well. Guess I'll stick with the name my parents gave me.

They'd probably appreciate it. I know a friend of my mom's was really hurt when her daughter changed her name from Alyssa to Amanda.
beautifuldreamer 06-30-2009, 06:15 PM No one ever seems to pronounce and/or spell my first name right... combined with last.. good lord!
Anyway, when someone does pronounce my name right, it's the best feeling in the world.. so no, I wouldn't change it. ;)

How is your first name pronounced anyway? Is is simply pronounced Matt-Lynn?

I accually love your last name. :)
beautifuldreamer 06-30-2009, 06:53 PM How is your first name pronounced anyway? Is is simply pronounced Matt-Lynn?
lol.. see?
Indeed, Mike! I always say, It's Matlyn. Mat- as in doormat.. Lyn- as in men.
ZeldaGilroy 06-30-2009, 08:00 PM I accually love your last name. :)
Thanks Mike. :)
The only thing I don't like about it is that it never gets pronounced correctly and people add the letter n and try to make it a more common surname. It's just a difficult name I guess. My first name is what bugs me the most. I was named after my dad and I was made fun if a lot as a kid for having a boy's name. :(

I was named after a good friend of my dad's. The friend was dying at the time my mom was pregnant with me, and he died a couple months before I was born. So, nope, never...
Mr. Television 06-30-2009, 10:00 PM No I'll never change my first name. I was named after my Dad. I go by Sonny though...that's what everybody calls me. No need to make it formal though.
JamesG 07-01-2009, 10:40 AM I don't really see a reason to.
Maybe I might want to pick a crazy "celebrity baby name" like Janarious or Courvoisier.
Brad Russ 07-01-2009, 09:36 PM Naah, I like my name. Officially my name's Bradley, but everyone calls me Brad, and I think it's a pretty good name.
I don't really see a reason to.

Jermajesty, Banjo, or Apple. I think Jermajesty rather suits you ;)
JamesG 07-01-2009, 10:05 PM Jermajesty, Banjo, or Apple. I think Jermajesty rather suits you ;)
On second thought, I'd pick Caligula.
Schmoopie 07-01-2009, 10:16 PM I've thought about it, but it's too much trouble and I have no idea what I would change it to. Probably Audrey if I was going to change it at all. People are always mispronouncing my name anyway, and when I answer the phone at work, they think I am saying "Audrey" instead of Andrea. But I like my name the way it is.
Andrea
Marvo301 07-01-2009, 10:28 PM When I was a child I wished I had a more common name like Joe, Pete, or Tom. Now that I'm an adult I appreciate the uniqueness of my name. So I wouldn't change it. My middle name on the other hand I could live without. My middle name is George and I've never really liked it. So please don't call me by my middle name. Just call me Marv!
On second thought, I'd pick Caligula.
 Okay, here you go

I really like the name George. That's a fine, old-fashioned name. My mom wanted me to name my first son Simon George. Probably not gonna happen, but you never know...
browneyes106 07-02-2009, 02:25 AM My first and last name do get misprounced a lot. But it doesn't bother me much anymore. My uncle legally changed his first name many years ago and I remember him saying it was a long process. When my uncle was really young a lot of my relatives started calling him another name which is now his legal first name.

Marvo301 07-02-2009, 02:36 AM Okay, George!

beautifuldreamer 07-02-2009, 02:38 AM Ah Mattie, I see you have a naughty streak late at night!
Who... me??? :woohoo:
How dare you accuse me of such shenanigans, Georgie?
Nighthawk76 07-02-2009, 02:41 AM Ah Mattie, I see you have a naughty streak late at night!
Marv, I'll let you in on a little secret. Mattie's middle name is Maude. Her name is Matlyn Maude. ;)
Marvo301 07-02-2009, 02:43 AM Yes You! But for some reason I just can't get mad at you for it! (probably because I'm too busy laughing!!! )

Oh come on Maudie! Do you really think I would tease you about your middle name!!:happyface
beautifuldreamer 07-02-2009, 03:04 AM Oh come on Maudie! Do you really think I would tease you about your middle name!!:happyface
My middle name is Eve, you goofball!
And by the way... from now on... it's George! :p
Wreckless 07-02-2009, 03:25 AM Remember the kid from "A Bronx Tale"? Imagine having a name like that, and having to be able to pronounce it day in and day out lol.

Chocoholic 07-02-2009, 10:19 AM When I was younger I wanted to, but now I really don't care.
Jessica 07-02-2009, 10:53 AM I WOULD NEVER CHANGE IT!!! I love my name! :D
TheHappyBurgerMeister 07-02-2009, 06:59 PM No, I never would. My name is unique- well, the spelling mainly (Kristina). Not many are named Kristina and if they are it's spelled Christina.
Speaking of changing names- here's a little story. A few years ago when I worked as a receptionist at a Vet's office there was a client named Debbie. Well, one day when she was bringing her pet in she told me she was (or did) changing her first name legally to Britt (or Britta or Brittan- something like that). I have no idea where she came up with that name! So, I had to change it in her client folder..... I just listened to her as she told me how she never liked her first name, Debbie, and how kids back in school would tease her and say "Debbie Double D". I just smiled and listened but inside I was thinking how weird that she would do that and to me it sounded like she was more in need of thick skin. So, that still bothered her years later that kids teased her about her name. Kids do that ALL the time?! Yeah, this woman was at least 40 I'd say. I see nothing wrong with the name Debbie, but to each there own, I guess.
Also, when I was in 2nd grade we had a special day where every kid in the class could pick a different name- any name at all that they liked. We could go by that name all day. I still remember I chose the name "Katie"!
coffield3 07-03-2009, 04:06 AM I would never change my name.... My mother would be so upset if I did.
Dude111 09-29-2025, 12:23 PM I picked "Yes for good reason"
Say someone was trying to hurt ya....Changing your name might be the only way to protect yourself!
