View Full Version : ESPN Votes the Patriots Best Team Coach and MVP of the Decade

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Over the course of 50 years, Steve Belichick stockpiled football books. He scoured shops across the country, always hunting for a title he didn't yet own.

Belichick's son began compiling in the 1970s. Their pursuit grew into what's believed to be the planet's largest collection of football books outside the Library of Congress and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Belichick collection -- stocked with 500 works that include "Practical Thesis in Football" by Amos Alonzo Stagg and "American Football" by Walter Camp -- is contained within the U.S. Naval Academy, where Steve Belichick coached 33 years.

As history advances and more books are added to the shelves, there will be an increasing percentage with Bill Belichick's name in them alongside other sideline legends.

ESPN.com selected Belichick as its all-decade coach for guiding the New England Patriots to three Super Bowls and four AFC championships and at least tying for the AFC East's best record each year since 2001.

That same résumé is why ESPN.com also chose Tom Brady as its MVP and the Patriots as its team of the decade. The honors were bestowed with consultation from NFL general managers, coaches, scouts and players.

When a team wins three Super Bowls in four years and plays in its conference championship game five times in a decade with one season to go, the choices crystallize.

"You have to recognize championships because, ultimately, that's what we're playing for," Belichick said when informed of ESPN.com's selections.

As Patriots head coach, Bill Belichick owns a 102-42 regular-season record.
Belichick is more than a head coach. When the Patriots hired him in 2000, owner Robert Kraft essentially gave Belichick total control over football operations. Belichick handpicked his supporting cast and signed off on every major decision.

"He's made some great moves, brought in some players who had been released from other places. And he's done it year after year," said Ted Marchibroda, the coach who gave Belichick his start with the Baltimore Colts in 1975.

The Patriots went 5-11 in Belichick's first season but haven't had a losing record since. After a mostly miserable gig with the Cleveland Browns, he is 102-42 in the regular season for the Patriots, a .708
win percentage.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy won two more games this decade for a .722 win percentage. Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher had a .647 win percentage.

The difference, though, is the Lombardi Trophy. Cowher and Dungy won one apiece. Belichick won three in a four-year span.

"It's definitely an honor when you consider the other great people that are involved in that, Coach Cowher, Coach Shanahan, Coach Dungy, a lot of great coaches there," Belichick said. "It's certainly an honor to be placed among the coaches of that time."

What about all-time? The Pro Football Hall of Fame has drawn up all-decade teams since the 1960s. The list includes Weeb Ewbank, Don Shula, Bill Walsh and Bill Parcells. The first three are enshrined in Canton. The fourth is on his way.

When I mentioned this to Belichick, he might've blushed for a half-second. He quickly praised his players, counting off a long string of names critical to the Patriots' success. Many of his players, however, were players other teams considered unworthy, malcontents, washed up.

"It's certainly flattering to be mentioned in the same breath as those guys, but honestly I don't sit around and think about it a lot," Belichick said. "We're so in the moment. We always have another bridge to cross.

"But I'm certainly proud of what our teams have done, proud to have been a part of them. I understand that it's not run-of-the-mill. We've had some great moments in this franchise. I've been pretty fortunate."

Belichick-Brady will be linked together in NFL history like Noll-Bradshaw or Walsh-Montana.
Fortune smiled most brightly -- and had a cleft chin -- in the sixth round of the 2000 draft. New England picked an awkward Michigan quarterback many viewed as a project.

Paul Brown had Otto Graham. Vince Lombardi had Bart Starr. Tom Landry had Roger Staubach. Chuck Noll had Terry Bradshaw. Walsh had Joe Montana.

Belichick and Brady will be linked forever.

Sooner than anybody could have fathomed, Brady supplanted Drew Bledsoe as the starter and led the Patriots on a final-minute drive to win their first Super Bowl title.

One of the enduring images from their upset victory over the St. Louis Rams, known as the "Greatest Show on Turf," was a boyishly exuberant Brady popping Bledsoe on the shoulder pads and yelling "We won!"

Belichick's "greatest move is when he replaced Bledsoe with Brady," Marchibroda said. "Nobody really believed it at the time.

"We on the outside hadn't seen Brady that much, but we'd seen Bledsoe, and it's hard to give up on a guy like Bledsoe. But [Belichick] did it and he was right, and Brady was a winner. To say that I could see that kind of success with Brady, I couldn't visualize that at the beginning."

In deciding the all-decade MVP, discussion came down to Brady and Peyton Manning. Some of our consultants claimed LaDainian Tomlinson might have won had he not shown signs of slippage last year.

Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury on opening day, but actually seeing Tomlinson as less than his usual, dominant self made an impression on our NFL experts.

Manning fans will point to the Colts quarterback's prolific passing stats, but where Brady sets himself apart is postseason performance. Brady won as many postseason games as Manning played in.

Belichick's decision to supplant Drew Bledsoe, right, with Tom Brady may have been his best decision.
Brady is 14-3 this decade, while Manning is 7-7. Brady has thrown 26 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. Manning has thrown 22 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

Also of note, Brady won three Super Bowls with an uninspiring group of receivers. In the one year he had Randy Moss and Wes Welker, the Patriots set several NFL records.

"The guy's just a winner," Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor said. "He knows how to win, period."

Taylor was named to ESPN.com's all-decade defense. Taylor has sacked Brady more than anybody else has, and you won't find a bigger Brady fan.

"He's got the talent. But everybody at this level has talent," Taylor said. "Maybe he does have a little more God-given ability than some others, but between the ears he's as good as they come."

Some Patriots critics still scoff at their success because of the Spygate scandal, one of the biggest NFL stories of the decade. Belichick was turned in for illegally videotaping opponents' defensive signals. The NFL fined him and stripped the Patriots of a first-round draft pick.

But ESPN analyst Herm Edwards, the former New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs coach, laughs at the overblown notion.

"If you're naïve to believe that helped him win a Super Bowl, you're kidding yourself. I don't believe that," said Edwards, who on one of the tapes submitted into evidence could be seen waving to the Patriots' cameras.

It also should be noted the Patriots went 18-1, nearly pulling off the NFL's first unblemished season since the Dolphins did it in 1972, after the Spygate mess.

About 30 other NFL franchises wish they could fail like that.

The Patriots aint ****...they won all their championships on cheating, on not playing the game the right way...they have an *******, piece of **** coach who doesn't teach morals of the game, who doesn't treat other coaches and teams with proper respect and is far from a role model and leader like coaches are molded and supposed to be....they shouldn't get this

in the last ten years, I'd either give it to the Steelers in football, the Pistons in the NBA or the Lakers....Steelers, going by success, the teams they've had and accumulated and the rings, Lakers- championships & The Pistons won a championship, and went to 6/7 straight conf. finals....not to mention having great teams and coaches. Those are the real teams that deserve to be winners, **** the patriots....

They filmed someone ONCE. That doesn't mean they cheated their way to the top. That was also before they had their undefeated regular season. How do explain that? People were hating on the Patriots before that story broke, so it just gave them something to harp and harp and harp and harp like little old nagging ladies. Jealousy is right. It wasn't one time Janice. Matt Walsh was accused of taping the Rams in the FIRST Superbowl they were in. They kept this guy on their staff for all 3 of those superbowls, Rams, Eagles & Panthers, and they cheated. Don't give me this jealousy crap. I know more this stuff then you do and I'm not jealous, they cheated, plain and simple. I think ALL of their 3 rings should of been taken away. Would of been 4, if not for Tyree LOL.

It's not jealousy when cheating is going on. A crappy attitude towards the allegations doesn't make it any better either. Bill BELICHEAT. Yeah, the Cleveland dude said it right.

Wrong. They were CAUGHT once. Big big big big difference. Like I said, Walsh was with them through all those SBs, and was also accused of filming the Rams. If one time is successful, why wouldn't he film the Eagles & Panthers as well? The 16-0 season they did it themselves, that's probably the ONLY time they didn't cheat, so I give it to them their....but they lost the most important game of the season anyway lol. I apologize about the f word, but my opinion on the patriots still stand, and the media knows what these guys did. I realize you're a big fan of Boston teams, but you need to also look at the accusations & what's going on here. And I'm not a old nagging lady. I'm allowed to have my opinion. The swearing is inappropriate, I admit, so I will just try to get to my point as clear as possible without ever using them in this topic. Ooohhh he got fined. That is NOTHING, compared to what some players get, or compared to what his punishment could of been. Goodell is a major softy. Belicheat should of been fined heavily, should of been suspended a few games at least, and should of had ALL, and I mean all of his 3 rings he cheated to get, taken away from him. I'm not kidding either. Players in baseball and football get suspended and or fined for CHEATING, steroids in their case, but it is overall the same wrongdoing, why should Belicheat get a pass? He shouldn't. I'm not a nag. You won't accept the fact of what happened, and or maybe you don't know the full extent of it either, I don't know. I think you just watch the games here and their, but don't look at the storylines. You said they only cheated once, which isn't true but hasn't been confirmed or caught. Still, that doesn't matter when their are accusations to the roof, on Belicheat's and Walsh's names. They should of gave it a rest. Maybe Jose Canseco should of gave them a pep talk among all of this happening, about where cheating gets you (mainly if get caught doing it, but also in general). Different sport he's in, but same wrongdoing. The Pats didn't get that memo I guess. I'm not blaming you, nor saying you're not a legitimate fan. I'm just making my point clear, and also trying to make you understand and full aware of what happened, and giving an opinion on the facts & accusations- that I believe they should of been punished.

The Steelers never cheated. It just seemed a rumor that they did, to get closer to a Super Bowl title, which I disagree and don't believe the rumors. If you're referring to me, I have my opinion on how phony and what cheaters the Pats are. That was broad casted ALL OVER ESPN/ESPN etc. everywhere about the accusations piled up against New England. I remember on Fox's pre-game, Jimmy Johnson admitted to doing the exact same thing that Bill Belichick was penalized for, which he learned from someone in the Chiefs organization. He went on to say he didn't find it particularly helpful and ultimately stopped doing it. He stated this type of activity is commonplace in the NFL. Personally I think the best team of the decade in all of sports is the San Antonio Spurs. And I think there coach Gregg Poppovich is the best, and most underrated coach. As far as the Pat's go, I can only judge based on what I know, and performance wise, I can't really disagree with this pick. They have been amazing this decade!! If I recall correctly, it was widely known that many other teams also did the same thing that the Patriots did as far as getting other teams on tape goes, but since the Patriots were the big fish, or team in town, all the blame fell on them. That doesn't excuse them, because bottomline, it's wrong to cheat regardless of who does it, but the fact is, they were punished and dealt with for what they did, and I thought the punishment was just. Once again, I can only give this opinion as an outsider, since I'm not a big NFL guy and I can guarantee you that I'll look into it further before giving a more informed opinion, but based on what I know, I can't really disagree with the Patriots as being the top choice. With the exception of the Spurs of course. Since the cheating was a one time thing, and since other teams also did it, I can't take this honor away from the Pat's. They proved that they don't need to cheat to win many times, including going 16-0, even though they lost in the SB. And from what Iv'e heard, what they did was pretty commonplace, and probably didn't even effect the outcomes much, if at all. And btw, if anyone thinks I'm only saying this because I'm friends with Janice, you're wrong, because I know many are probably thinking that. If Janice disagreed with me, you can bet she'd let me know, and if I disagreed with her, you can bet I'd let her know. We disagree with many things, but I just so happen to agree with her on this issue. This is my unbiased opinion.

Between the Pats and Spurs, I'd give New England a slight edge, for two reasons:

1. Unlike the Spurs, they have gone back-to-back.

2. The Patriots faced tougher opponents in their Super Bowl wins- especially the Rams and Eagles- than the Spurs did in the NBA Finals (Only one opponent, the 2005 Pistons, really put up a spirited battle).

Both are great, but if I had to choose one, that would be my criteria.

I respect your well thought out opinions, and can see why you'd pick the Patriots. You made some very good points. Fact is, I'm more of a basketball guy, so my pick of the Spurs is probably a little biased, I admit that. I just think they are an amazing team, who are often underrated for what they've done, and certainly Poppovich is an underrated coach. I think your last point though more than anything confirms what a great team the spurs were. I don't think they dominated every team other than the Pistons because the teams they played were weak, but instead think their domination showed just how amazing the spurs were at those times. The Spurs were JUST THAT DAMN GOOD!!!

In the end though, I really can't argue against the Patriots. Their resumes speak for themselves, and if I were more of an NFL fan, I probably would have picked them, or atleast given them more consideration. What can I say though, I'm just a biased hoops fan for life. ;)

I remember other people who played were saying the same thing. I tend to believe people who actually are involved in the NFL. I remember back in the 1970's the Cowboys caught a spy from the Redskins who was sent to spy on them from George Allen. If you're going to say the Patriots cheat then you also better say that everybody does it.

Jimmy Johnson cheated, probably with the Cowboys when they won the 3 rings?- lol. This is really getting bad if probably true. What's next?

"Phil Jackson caught cheating, press finds tapes of video taping Spurs practices"

the Pats didn't film ONCE- lol. You just assume they filmed once. Nah it wasn't mangini, since you don't even remember who they fired, it was Matt Walsh, and they did it more then once. Lol lies? I do not speak of any lies. I am at least spreading facts, unlike you and your 3 championships argument, in EVERY post. Belicheat doesn't do the wash. Wears the same damn sweatshirt every game and cheats on top of it. I think Tom Brady is very talented, and has a great arm, but I can't give him the highest regards since he cheats his way to the top. Peyton Manning, Roethlisberger and McNabb, however, do not cheat.
Filmed once, fined once. You, jealous probably forever. They earned their rings. When you have to harp on what someone wears, you've got a lame-O non-argument. Yawn. Nag, nag, nag. Give it a rest.

You hate anything Boston. Patriots, Red Sox, whatever. Never understood haters. I can see not liking something, but you've posted how you hate Boston teams.

The reason why Boston is hated is because of two things...money and marketing.

Cleveland doesn't really have that, nor any other sports cities especially in the Sun Belt. It's always New York City, Los Angles, or even Boston.

Hey Kyle, you know I respect many of your opinions and all, but where the hell did you get Tom Brady being white trash from?? Like Janice says, dude dates a supermodel, he's good looking as hell, dresses and looks like he came straight out of GQ magazine. People who are considered white trash are usually people who sponge off the Government, have no teeth, wear dirty clothes, and have babies left and right so that they'll get a bigger check in the mail each month. How does Tom Brady fit into that picture?? When I think Tom Brady, the furthest thing from my mind is that he's white trash. He's the exact opposite of white trash. I don't understand where you get that from.

Another thing I wanted to point out is that most of the players had no idea that the other team was being recorded. I heard that on ESPN, and even heard many players who were asked about it who seemed shocked about the entire situation. So for those who are calling certain players cheaters, I think you're way off base. It's the coaches and managment who were involved with the video taping, the players should get little blame, if any for the situation.

Let me throw in one other thing about the Pats and Spurs:

New England has had legitimate rivalries during this decade with the other AFC Powerhouses of the 2000s- the Steelers and Colts.

San Antonio's rivalries with the Suns and Lakers are not quite the same, IMO.

Manny actually was shy, quiet and well-groomed during the majority of his time in Cleveland. I think the biggest scandal occured in 1996/97 when he showed up for spring training about 25 pounds overweight. They made him ride a pink bike all around the training complex.

I agree. One incident that other teams were also involved with doesn't prove anything. You can take The Steelers, the Colts, and the Giants, and they haven't accomplished nearly as much as what the Pat's have this decade. And I have a feeling that the Pat's will only make their legacy greater by having a pretty damn good season this year as well. Even without Brady last season, they were decent, but with him, they should be unstoppable. Should be an interesting season!!

As for his claim about the Patriots, I already addressed that in a prior post. People within the league have said it goes on and nobody has proven that they got an unfair advantage over anybody. Solomon had had a long history of trashing many teams- he's had a long history of doing so- but nobody gets on his case.

IMO, Solomon should be held accountable for what he has said about a lot of teams (doesn't give some teams credit for winning, took a lot of cheapshots at the Chiefs in 2003 and Seahawks in 2005), which can be very infuriating.

I've been called out for what I've said and I took my lumps and have been careful; if anything, I think the same should be done for most of us. If anything, that should be for EVERYONE.

I made some rough comments and I got called out; Wreckless is getting called out; Brian took some unnecessary cheap shots at the Philly teams.

Personally, I think maybe this thread should be closed soon before things gets out of hand.

For most of the decade the Eagles haven't had much competition. I'll give them credit for dominating the NFC East but they've done nothing with it...they have no titles to show for it. It's like that person I saw on TV a few years ago trying to claim the Atlanta Braves were a dynasty because they dominated the NL for so long. They won one title. The Yankees were the Dynasty during that time because they actually won something.

I don't hate women at all. My best friend is a female. My best friends on the site here are mainly of the female gender. It's not about that. I made a post about not liking the Patriots for cheating, and it escalates so much further. It needs to stop. Myself included. Chris, care to be a mediator?

For most of the decade the Eagles haven't had much competition. I'll give them credit for dominating the NFC East but they've done nothing with it...they have no titles to show for it. It's like that person I saw on TV a few years ago trying to claim the Atlanta Braves were a dynasty because they dominated the NL for so long. They won one title. The Yankees were the Dynasty during that time because they actually won something.

How about you and Brian stop running your mouth about them? I could give a rat's ass about the Skankees. This has nothing to do with them.

I think it should be closed as well. If it doesn't, Brian and Sonny will just keep running their mouths and talking it up. Close the thread now please, somebody. It's been getting out of hand. You're the only one not arguing with anybody. Be the mediator lol.

It's easy to say that, when it's 5 people vs. 1. I don't care if people hate on my for hating the Patriots. I gave my opinion on the Pats cheating, and Janice responded. I did not mean to make it a personal or a much deeper issue. If I would of, I would of went on in my first post in this thread. I started talking about the Patriots cheating which is a no doubt about it issue, and people responded and I responded when Janice did. I should of just shut up, but maybe she didn't need to respond to me in the first place. I don't know. I'm not debating? Check the previous posts, before I started arguing with people, you knucklehead. Either you play dumb, or you haven't checked the thread all the way through. You act like a jerk as well, taking shots at the Eagles. 44-6, their's your break. You know nothing and you assume. Yeah ok, it's Sonny's way or the highway huh? Leave me alone. I posted my opinion on this thread and Janice responded. I shouldn't of taken it the way I did, and should of just shut up, but oh well.
Hey I stayed out of it until just now. I posted my opinion and left. I only came back when I saw how you were so called debating. I have read this thread. It's your opinion that the Patriots are cheaters. Janice responded. If you had said that about the Cowboys I would have too. It's one thing to debate but you take things too personally.

You are a predictable joke. It's like when someone makes an off color remark about a black person and when they are confronted about it, say, "My best friend is black."

Say whatever you want Kyle, but your mouth is going to get you a check your ass can't cash.

Looks like Wreckless didn't change after all. He's acting like the same nasty punk he did when he first landed here. I'm locking this thread for the time being.

You leave Solomon out of this. He has nothing to do with this, but you always have to bring him up. He's been warned plenty of times. Don't speak of what you don't know. Don't tell me he doesn't get warned. You're saying the Mods aren't doing their jobs. Nobody asked your opinion about Solomon. Every chance you get, you take a shot at him. You always have. You've made threads just to bash Solomon and posted a list of you taking shots at him on Chit Chat. so you're a fine one to talk. Also, it's not against the rules to not give a team credit for winning or taking shots at teams. You just have a personal vendetta against the guy, and took this opportunity to get a few shots in at him. It's not happening. What you did in your post was against the rules. You don't just go off about a member who's not even involved in the debate.
