I believe he actually spoke. :D I also remember seeing Larry's "brother Darryl"(as opposed to Larry's other brother Darryl), Tony Papenfuss on the game show, Password. It was weird seeing him as a regular guy on there. And this couldn't have been too much before he did Newhart, but he looks so much older as Darryl. And I recognized the guy who plays Chris in this. He played Sonja's boyfriend Michael in two episodes of Mama's Family. I always enjoyed him on that show. They're in a rustic community, but the other characters consider them to be primitive. One talks, the others are silent. And both Larry and Briscoe Darling sometimes speak with an exaggerated courtliness. If you've ever watched SNL, you'll know what I mean. I feel kind of sorry for William Sanderson, because he had a somewhat decent movie career before the show and much greater range than Newhart allowed.
