In light of the recent losses of Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson, I want to pose this question.

Which celebrity deaths (any of them-long ago or recent) hit you the hardest? Either ones that you weren't expecting at all or the death of someone that you were a big fan of.

I guess the most shocking death for me was John Ritter. I heard that on the news during my lunch break and was still reeling from it several hours later.

The worst for me personally, though was probably Stanley Kammel, who was Dr. Charles Kroger on Monk. I'll never forget this. I was at a coffee shop in my office building one morning and I happened to look up at their LCD screen that has news items. I saw the headline "Monk Psych dies... cast and crew deeply saddened". At first I seriously thought it was a promo for Monk and Psych since they were in-between seasons. Then when I saw the last part, I realized that it must have been Stanley. Unfortunately, I found out about this around 7:45am, and I don't have access to the Internet at work (or anywhere near there for that matter). So I had to wait until after 11, when I went to lunch. I called my husband at work and asked him to look up what had happened for me. He told me that Stanley had died of a heart attack. It took me a REALLY long time to get over this (at least two months), and the funny thing was that I never cried over it. I never met the man, but I used to post religiously on the USA Network board on the Monk section. Stanley used to post on there as well. They had a thread where members could post questions for the actors and then the actors would go through and answer them. I was extremely touched when Stanley chose my question to answer. I really wish I could have met him, because he seemed like a wonderful man. It was like losing a friend. I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but I haven't watched Monk in ages. I hated the first episode of last season, because there was barely a mention of him. I was VERY upset over that, even though the cast did a promo commercial for heart disease in his honor. I thought they should have done a whole show in his memory or something; even spotlight Dr. Kroger since he only had a leading role in one episode. Incidentally that is one of my all-time favorite episodes.

Sorry I got carried away there! Another shocking death is when I found out that George Carlin died. My husband and I were in Vegas and we were checking out the buffet in one of the strip hotels. They had a flat screen TV on the wall and I saw Jerry Seinfeld being interviewed by Larry King. I immediately raced over to see what he was talking about and was shocked when I found out that the show was about George Carlin's passing. I felt really bad for my husband because he loved George Carlin. He talks about him a lot and tells me about all the Carlin albums he used to have. He even said that it was nice of Jerry Seinfeld to agree to go on Larry's show and talk about Carlin. I agree.

After thinking about it both Princess Diana and JFK Jr. probably affected me most because they were the result of tragic accidents, in addition to being untimely and unexpected!

It killed me and I couldn't stop thinking about it and how terrible it was and how young he was, and his family and young daughter. I was honestly very depressed because of it, but I didn't really start crying until I saw a special on him. It took a couple of years for it to really sink in. It still angers me that he had to die so young and isn't around anymore.

That happened to me too Ashlee. I never really cried much over a celebrity. I've gotten real sad before but not crying so much that I couldn't stop. I was like that when I watched John's tribute on TV Land that week. He really did feel like an old friend. Whenever I was down, he just cheered me up. It was so unfair that he died so young. :(

I remember being really crushed after Shari Lewis died back in 1998. I loved her. And of course I was sad after both John Ritter & Don Knotts died. But more recently, I was shocked like everyone else after Michael Jackson died. I was never a fan of his or never really listened to his music that much, but his death still hit me.

Easily, River Phoenix. His public persona was one of a health-addict - vegetarian, anti-drug advocate, young and very healthy. Who knew about all of his private demons. The manner of David Carridines death shocked me. I guess other than overdoses and other excesses, suicides are the most surprising. Brian Keith, Ed Flanders, but especially if they are young - Ben Refro, Seung-yeon Woo. Although Ji-Hoo Kim's suicide was not as surprising given his struggles, but woke up Korea to its prejudices.

After reading everyone's posts, I have to reply.

The death that hit me the hardest was John Ritter. I wasn't expecting it and it was so sudden and unexpected. It's almost still hard to believe. He was a great entertainer and a nice guy. He made the whole world laugh.:(

Another one would have to be Bea Arthur. I had no idea she was even sick. I loved her on The Golden Girls and to hear about her death was such a shock. It definitely hasn't been the same without her.:(

Another one would be Estelle Getty, although she had been sick for a long time, her death still hit me hard. She was a very wonderful, and unique person. She made me laugh on The Golden Girls. She will never be forgotten. She and Bea are reunited as mother and daughter in Heaven. :(

Don Knotts death was a shock to me as well. I loved him on The Andy Griffith Show and in the movies he did. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, The Incredible Mr. Limpett, and The Apple Dumpling Gang. He made me laugh. He was one of a kind. I will never forget him. :(

Farrah Fawcett's death was definitely a surprise. I knew she had cancer but as far as I knew she was doing well and was feeling good. I had no idea she was near the end. I loved her in The Burning Bed, it was a great movie, based on a true story; which I have read and it is excellent. She was a great actress and was still beautiful until the end. Her death was tragic. :(

Last but not least, is the death of Michael Jackson. Whether you were a fan of his or not, his death still hit hard. I have always enjoyed his music and his dancing. I never believed him to be guilty of molesting those boys, the parents were just out for money. I believed him when he said he was innocent. Michael Jackson isn't a child molester or a pedophile, it's not his nature. He was eccentric, yes, but that's what made him who he was. He was an icon. He was a phenomenal dancer and singer. He did so much for people and for children. The world will never be the same without him. He had a talent that nobody will ever be able to measure up to. He did what he loved to do and that was to entertain people and make them happy. People were cruel and mean to him and that was wrong. He was born to entertain and he gave us what we wanted. His death will be felt for a very long time and there will be a big hole in people's hearts and the world that can't be filled. Rest In Peace, Michael. I will always love you and will miss you. You are in Heaven with the angels now. :crying:

Reading all the other posts, I wanted to respond.

John Belushi's death shocked me, even though I wasn't a fan. I actually remember where I was when I was told.

When I found out about Chris Farley, the sad thing was I wasn't surprised. He died in Dec., and the Jan. before, he was on the Tonight Show, and he was so hyper, more than he usually was. He was really sweating, too and I'm thinking that I wouldn't be surprised if he had a heart attack. So he was dead less than a year later, although it wasn't a heart attack.

John Ritter was a shock, so unexpectant. Princess Diana & MJ's death were a shock becuse first you hear that something had happened to them and you think 'they're going to be OK', then you turn to CNN and they're announcing they had died.

Lucille Ball's death was just really sad because of who she was.

I thought Farrah was going to last longer, especially when it was announced that she & Ryan were going to get married.

Probably the one that hit me the hardest was Freddie Mercury of Queen. I love Queen and he is still one of my all-time favorite singers. Even though Freddie had announced the day before that he had AIDS, I did not expect him to go so quickly. I had tears in my eyes when I found out, not another celebrity death has done that. Yes, sadness, but no tears.

The death of soap star Ruth Warrwick (Phoebe Tyler Wallingford, All My Children) was very devestating to me because i just didn't want her to die.

Same with Eilen Hierle (Myrtyle Fairgate, All My Children) and Anna Lee (Lilia Quatermaine, General Hospital).

Shell Kepler (Nurse Amy Vinning, General hospital) was also a tough one for me.

Charles Schulz. My husband and I are big Peanuts fans, so this one was a definite shock.

John Candy's death as well as Chris Penn. Those were surprising to hear about.

As much of an Audrey Hepburn fan as I am, I should have listed her as well. I remember hearing about when she died; January 20, 1993, but at the time I only knew of her by name and that she was an actress. It wasn't till 2004 when I became a huge fan, but I remember once I missed her so badly that I cried. Crazy, since I never even met her.

Richard Biggs played Dr. Marcus Hunter on Days of Our Lives and he died of an anurysm just like John Ritter did. I mentioned this in another thread but back in March of 2004 I went to a "memorial show" in Hollywood for him. It was more like a celebrity gathering (I'll make a separate post and include pics), but John Ritter's wife was there and she did that because of his death from an anurysm as well. She was the nicest person. I'd never met a celebrity that nice before. Actually I hadn't met anyone quite as nice as she was until that benefit.

It was sad to hear about Carol OConnor. I loved him as Archie Bunker but he was also in a WONDERFUL movie with David Duchovney and Minnie Driver called "Return to Me". One of the most romantic movies I've ever seen. Sigh.. BTW, he played Minnie Driver's grandad and he had an Irish accent. It was nice to see him in a feature film.

After I realized that she was really gone, I kind of went overboard, reading stuff about her and so forth. I have that commemorative People Mag that had the white cover and her picture on it. I may buy their tribute to Michael Jackson, but I haven't decided yet. If I had to choose between them, I'd choose Diana.

As far as JFK Jr goes, I didn't believe this one at all. I remember they searched for the bodies forever and I was just so sure that they would find him alive. Again, someone that I didn't pay much attention to until after he died. He would have gone on to great things had he lived, and his wife was so beautiful.

Ron Glass. I didn't cry when I Ron passed away, but the news of his death did have a major affect on me emotionally since I was such a HUGE fan of his back in 2003-2004; it was like losing a part of me

Quite a few of my favorites passed away during my lifetime:

I was less than 1 year old, when George Reeves died. Consequently, that didn't really have the impact it might have had if I'd been older. Ditto: Lou Costello.

I was about 6, when Stan Laurel died. I also remember this as being somehow distant and detached from my life.

I remember Bud Abbott, Moe Howard and Larry Fine seemed to come one on top of the other. I was sad and a little POed that they didn't seem to get the attention other stars did.

Groucho's death came at the time I was really just getting out and spreading my wings a little. It was kind of overshadowed by my personal life.

Christopher Reeve was just tragic despite all he accomplished in those last 9 years.

Perhaps the one that affected me the most was Stephen Strimpell in 2006; not just because I'd been obsessing over Mr. Terrific for those years leading up to his death. It was because he died right here in New York (about 2 months after he answered my fan letter), and I didn't learn about it until 4 months later. I had to be told by another fan in Germany.

Okay, to the world at large he was no Michael Jackson, but he was a hero to me.

I know what you mean. If anyone would've been the one to beat the odds and walk again, it would've been Christopher Reeve. Though I was probably more shocked about the passing of his wife, Dana. What a wonderful couple they were. :rip:

I remember crying out loud when I heard that Wally Cox had died. I was in third grade and he was my first "celebrity death".

I was alive when Freddie Prinze killed himself, too. That was so shocking to the whole country, such a young man with so much promise...

Princess Di also really shocked and saddened me. Something about the terrible life she'd had to lead, then finally escaping it and becoming her own woman and a very good one at that, only to die so quickly was just crushingly sad.

And yeah, Chris Farley for me, too. He always seemed like such a good guy that was plagued by insecurity and a need to please, and again, at SUCH a young age (I think he was 32 or something).

Guess I didn't include Reeves since he'd been injured so long ago before he died, but yes, that entire story was heartbreaking. What a class act he and his whole family were. I remember getting down at times and then seeing him with such courage on TV living (and working!) while totally paralyzed...really put me to shame.

I am totally ashamed I forgot about this one. I remember that agonizing weekend where it seemed like MAYBE there was hope, and as the hours passed the newscasters grew more and more grim. And again, like Reeve, here was a guy (and a family) that seemed deeply decent and caring and 'together', a real force for good in the world. So sad...:(

I can't believe I forgot to add Heath Ledger - he and I were born in the same year. That just seemed to come out of nowhere. :eek:

Any celebrity that died under the age of 60 really stings and the ones that died under 35-40 stings me twice as bad.

Rebecca Schaeffer - her death forever changed Hollywood at that time. After her death California passed Anti-Stalking Laws and it made celebrities be extra cautious as to who they were seeing and/or getting their fan mail from (even to this day and age today!).

The death of Dana Plato hit me very hard on a personal level.I was always very much in love with her,even when she had her various rock-bottom troubles.I had always felt that if fate had ever made it possible for us to meet,I would have made her so happy and proud of herself,that I truly believe that this would've made it possible for Dana to have been alive today.Alas, such a thing was never to be.The memory of her charm and beauty haunt me very gently even to this very day.Rest in peace,lovely Dana.

Dolph Sweet of Gimme a Break was a hard one. When the show wrote his character having passed away my father died that year and watching that episode when the family was dealing with his passing was hard to watch. I broked down during the episode.

Allen Ludden was a hard one as well. Password was never the same after he passed away and matter of fact after he had to stepped down with his health declining. Bill Cullen and Tom Kennedy did a great job hosting as well as Bert Convy but without Allen there something was missing.

There were a few in my lifetime that had affected me.

The first was John Ritter. I had just gotten into Three's Company, and I loved the show 8 Simple Rules. I remember I was about ten, and had gotten a fan letter ready to send to him, then of course that's when he had died. I was a little upset about that.

The other was Eddie Albert. I have been a fan of his for a while. I started liking him when I had started watching Green Acres, and then after that I looked for movies that he had starred in. To this day, I still have a magazine article on him from after his death on my wall.

I remember when Jim Davis died. I was listening to the radio and on the news at the top of the hour they announced that one of the stars of Dallas was dead. They reported at first that he died from an ulcer. I was just shocked. I wasn't up to date on Hollywood news back then and didn't know that he was dying. Last Tuesday, March 22, the former mayor of Toronto Rob Ford died of cancer at the age of 46. Torontonians and people all over Canada are still in shock at the suddenness of it all and they continue to mourn and remember their beloved mayor while looking back at his colourful and eventful life.


For all Canadians, one of the most tragic events in our history was the death of Terry Fox in 1980. He was also struck down by cancer in the middle of his world-famous Marathon of Hope, where he hoped to run across the country using one good leg and one artificial leg which was damaged by cancer. He made it almost halfway through, stopping near Winnipeg when he became very sick and was forced to stop. He died not long after and the run was eventually completed when other Canadians took over and ran in his memory. Since then, each Sept. Canadian communities organize their own Terry Fox Run to raise money and awareness for cancer research and honor his memory on the anniversary of his death.

Ron Glass. I did not cry when I found out that Ron had passed away, but his passing did have a huge effect on me emotionally; he was a major part of my life back in 2003-2004 since I was such a huge fan. Losing him was similar to losing an old friend.

George Michael. When I read about George's sudden death, and on Christmas, I quite sad. I was a big Wham fan back in early 1980's. I played his Christmas song: "Last Christmas" over and over.

I've replied to this at least once but the two that hit me hardest were Stanley Kammel from Monk and Nora Ephron. However I loved Audrey Hepburn and actually didn't become a huge fan of hers till long after she passed. But every once in a while I get really upset over her passing, even though she left us in 1993.

I saw a documentary on Youtube about the death of Robin Williams. Williams was going through what is called "Lewy's Body Dementia" and that in private he was prone to very strange and erratic behavior, and in the throes of this behavior killed himself. So while Robin Williams did commit suicide, he did it under a mental disease. In short, he was not in his right mind.

Mine is Michael Jackson. I still remember turning on my computer to read the news of the day and like millions of other people was absolutely shocked at the news.

I am disappointed because the man was such a train wreck in his personal life, I really wanted to see what he would have been like now, in his sixties and beyond. Honestly I could have seen him just flat broke hiding out in France or somewhere and people still hounding him for pictures and interviews. His death was like watching a fascinating film and then abruptly the film stops without a conclusion or a resolution.

Phil Hartman - I was in high school when it happened and what hit me was just the sheer violence of his death. I don't think the general public was aware that he was in a violate marriage. What's particularly sad is that his kids were in the house when he was murdered by his wife, before she turned the gone on himself.

John Ritter - He was still active when he suddenly died, doing 8 Simple Rules. I would imagine that he was in great agony when he died from an aortic dissection. Of course, Three's Company was and is still, on television somewhere, so it was inevitable that younger generations would be introduced to him during his prime. Plus, John Ritter was by most accounts, one of the nicest, most down-to-earth people in the business. So it wasn't that surprising that there was a great outpouring of grief in the industry.

Kobe Bryant - It has been nine months, and I'm still dumbfounded that he's actually gone. Kobe's death is without hesitation one of the most shocking and devastating celebrity deaths in my lifetime. It literally came right out of the blue that Sunday morning in January. The fact that his daughter and at least seven others perished in that helicopter crash makes it all the more upsetting.

Robin Williams - His death is another one that really took me off guard, because it really felt like it came out of nowhere. I think that most people weren't aware of what Lewy body dementia was before he took his own life or the fact that he was suffering a great deal. I think because we saw Robin Williams as force of nature of a comedian, we don't think that underneath it all, was agony.

Judith Barsi - Was was a tad bit too young to remember her death when it first happened back in 1988. But this is one of the celebrity deaths that I'm always reluctant to revisit, because I immediately become easily angry and extremely depressed. For those who don't know, Judith Barsi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Barsi)was a child actress back in the '80s. She's probably most famous for providing the voice of Ducky in The Land Before Time and Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go to Heaven. Hearing and thinking about her death always makes me sick to my stomach knowing that her father killed her when she was just 10 years old.

Owen Hart - His death was completely avoidable and preventable. And what's especially heart-breaking is the knowledge that when Owen was falling to his imminent death at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, he yelled at the referee in the ring to get out of the way.

Whitney Houston - Her death, given her self-destructive lifestyle, was probably inevitable. But I think that we were all still hoping and rooting for her to pull herself together. The fact that her daughter died in roughly the same manner is especially sad.

Rebecca Schaeffer - This is another celebrity death, that I hate having to revisit because it immediately makes me both depressed and angry. If there's any silver linings behind her murder, it's the fact that the DMV no longer releases private addresses and it helped prompt the passage of America's first anti-stalking laws.

Brandon Lee - He died in a freak accident just as he was about to make his big breakthrough movie with The Crow.

Prince - For some reason, I figured that Prince lived a clean, healthy life. I don't think that most of us knew that he had an issue with pain killers. I figured that Prince's main vice was simply being a workaholic. And the fact that he died alone in an elevator is especially upsetting.

Michael Jackson - This is sort of like Whitney Houston, which we kind of had to figure that given the life that he led, it may have been inevitable. But it still came as a shock. Michael Jackson was always this larger than life figure, even late in his life. When he died, it really felt like the '80s (and by extension, a part of our childhood) for all intents and purposes, died for good.

Chadwick Boseman - In hindsight, the signs that he was ill were there given how thin and frail he had been looking. But at the time, most of us were hoping that he lost weight for a role or he changed his diet. And I don't think that any of us could've known that he was already in the middle of dealing with cancer when he was playing Black Panther. This may be the first time that an actor passed away, while right in the middle of his career playing a superhero.

Christopher Reeve - This is sort of like Chadwick Boseman, in that when he had his accident and was paralyzed, we didn't want to believe it since he was Superman. And we were all rooting for him to eventually get out of his wheelchair.

Last week marked the passing of George Armstrong, who was the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs during their last Stanley Cup win in 1967 and also captained the team through 3 straight titles in 1962, 1963, and 1964. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975 and was named as #12 among the Top 100 Leafs of all time during their Centennial anniversary year of 2017 where he also had his #10 retired by the team. He is the 5th former Leaf alumni to die in the past year along with Brian Glennie, Eddie Shack, Bob Nevin, and Howie Meeker, all great players and good people as well and I miss them all.

The one that has hit me the hardest was when O. C. Smith suddenly died. Over the years he became a Religious Science Minister and I attended his church every Sunday. He sang at all his services and what an inspirational teacher. I had just attended his Thanksgiving day service and he died the next day... what a guy.

I truly felt as though I lost a member of my own family when I heard the news even sometimes viewing things as 'before/after Lucy died'.

I believe for me also, Robin Williams 63 was a shocker.

I always dreaded the news of Betty White's death, and although it did hit me hard, I had been dealing with the death of a close friend and was overall numb when I first heard about it.

Steven Bochco. I know we are getting an LA Law reboot but I know it won't be the same without him at the helm. I hope it does not sell for that very reason. I was really looming forward to the one done in 2016-2017 because it was more like LA Law in the old days.

I remember the news of the passing of Elvis and later John Lennon when I was young, so obviously those were days I won't forget. And Rick Nelson, I recall the news clearly.

Much later on, the passing of Meredith MacRae at age 56 was hard to take (2000).

Bob Newhart- I wasn't surprised being that he was very old but it still makes me sad. Newhart is one of my all time favorite sitcoms. In fact my original screen name was Newhart Fan. When someone goes forward, it is always going to be someone who hasn't made such a headline before, and it can always be at any time a person that we consider to be a favorite of ours. On July 18th, the singer of my most favorite Christmas song rode off into the sunset. Her name is Helen Cornelius, and she was 83 years old.
