NEW YORK — The Oscar-winning songwriter and director behind "You Light Up My Life" has been indicted on charges of raping or sexually assaulting 11 women.

Joseph Brooks, who's 71, will be arraigned later Tuesday.

Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau says nine of the victims answered an ad on Craigslist seeking women to audition for acting roles.

Brooks' assistant, Shawni Luicer was charged with criminal facilitation. Prosecutors say she helped arrange for the women to come to his apartment.

Brooks won the Oscar for Best Original Song for the 1977 ballad "You Light Up My Life."

He also wrote and directed the "You Light Up My Life" movie. It's about a comedian who has a one-night stand with a director.

Brooks' attorney, Jeff Hoffman, says "there will be lengthy arguments" during the arraignment

Good grief. He's the same guy who wrote, scored, produced, directed AND starred in 1978's If Ever I See You Again, co-starring future Charlie's Angel Shelley Hack. The title song became a hit for Roberta Flack. I wondered whatever happened to him. Not good.

It's a shame that the guy who wrote such a beautiful song turned out to be such an ugly person.

I wonder what Debbie Boone has to say about all this.

Puts a whole new twist on the lyrics, "How can it be wrong when it feels so right?" Also heard the song was dedicated to God. Go figure. ohno:

I agree! What a horrible way to live, but thankfully now he's paying for it. I doubt that is any comfort to the victims though. They have to live with this for the rest of their lives. I cannot even imagine going through something like that.

Debby was the one who chose to sing the song in honor of God, I hear (I read that a long time ago). But yeah, that lyric has a whole knew twist now.
