We sort of touched on this in another thread. Honestly, I felt sorry for Alice Pearce a lot as Gladys....I don't know what it was about her, but she just seemed pitiful at times! She didn't seem as "nosey neighbor"-ish as the second one. Anyone else feel the same?

Yeah  but the second seemed more annoying, in-your-face and nosey....just more of an overall busybody! "Aeeeeeeebnaaaaa!"

I liked Gladys #1 better. It's too bad she died of cancer early on in the show's run (1966).

(Incidentally, if I'm not mistaken, she died on the same day as William Frawley of I Love Lucy.)

Yes, I do....Too bad nobody believed her, that's what made her so funny though. I really felt sorry for her and knew she was ill during the second season of the show you, could tell she lost alot of weight and looked frail.

I personally preferred Alice Pierce as Gladys Kravitz, i thought she was Brilliant, Funny yet emoting in her portrayal with a real depth of performance.

You really felt for her & cared about her character, almost wanting her to finally succeed in getting Abner to stop rolling his eyes & actually believe her one time.

At the same time i thought Sandra Gould's portrayal was basically the same in characterization yet far more aggressive in nature, as a result i think more effective at times from a characterization perspective.

They both at times were almost friends with Samantha & even were concerned about her welfare & trying to help & protect her, but both most of the time were basically trying to get her, as well as remove her strange behaviour from the area.

I think that if either were present for the entire run that the show would have been well served in the process.

You're right - March 3, 1966.

I also preferred Alice P. over Sandra G. and I feel sorry that she passed away. I never really felt sorry for her Gladys character though, I thought she was really quite funny. I never cared that much for Sandra G. as Gladys, she seemed a little too spiteful & aggressive in her portrayal of Gladys.

LOL, I just remembered Sandra in one of the first episodes when she is walking around the house with those other women and those boys are tied down to the bed. LOL!!

That was actually Alice Pierce as Gladys Kravitz in the Season One episode
#3 "Mother meets what's his name" Oct.8, 1964 where Endora tied those boys down to the bed to prove she could be a Bad Witch.

I remember Sandra best as Gladys in #115 " Safe & Sane Halloween" from Season 4 where she barges into the Stephens house with Abner to reclaim her Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad !! Nephew Tommy who has developed a cast iron stomach to go with his new appearance.

I liked how Alice Pearce's Gladys was friendly with Samantha, and vice versa. Sam never minded Gladys' company or found her annoying. Many episodes were about Sam helping her. I don't recall her or Darrin ever rolling their eyes at Gladys or Abner, and Gladys never seemed to want to get rid of the Stephens. She was just confused and scared, but not hostile.

She actually had more trouble with Abner than Samantha! Who wouldn't get a little shrill and desperate if their husband lost interest in marriage and activities? There was a scene where Gladys was enjoying being a spectator at a community event and all Abner wanted to do was listen to his radio.

Since Samantha and Darrin didn't view Gladys with disdain, but as a bystander befuddled by the magical goings-on, it was easier to have sympathy for her.

Now when Sandra Gould took over, Gladys did become hostile to Samantha. The Stephens rarely seemed as if they thought about her as anything more then an irritant, and Gladys was less perplexed and more accusatory. It was easy to see why Abner would be annoyed with this Gladys.

And the viewers wouldn't feel very sorry for her considering her attitude towards Samantha.

I missed the spirit of neighbory-ness between the original Gladys and the Stephens!

OH Nuts!

I liked Aliced P as Gladys more too. She was confused and puzzled w/o being spiteful like the Sandra Gould character. I always wished there had been an ep where the Sandra Gould character had got her just desserts. Like maybe having a run in with Endora and Endora zapping her into a strait jacket. Now THAT would have been a hoot.

I don't think Abner would've protested too much.

Me neither. I could see him smoking his pipe, looking at her in one and saying "nice outfit Gladys, but its a little tight on you". I wished there had been an ep with her in one, it soooo would have served her right. Now THERE was a real "witch"! (The Sandra "Gladys"). And of course what would have capped the scene off would be Endora and little Tabitha giggling in the background.

I think I prefer the first Gladys, but I'm more used to the second one, because she was in more episodes and for a while only the color episodes were repeated.

There is a semi-blooper that nobody seems to have picked up on: in the third season episode where Aunt Clara causes the blackout, Gladys is trying to get Abner to believe that the lights are on at the Stephens' house. Later in the episode, he comes to get her after she faints and sees the lights are on - but nobody seems to realize it. In reality, that should have proven Gladys' point right there!
